 The Hunt, Open to All
Drake Taggart

Halfway through breakfast Drake stopped and took a quick head count. Finding that his professors had come through brought the first smile to appear on the man’s face in days. At least now, with all the students in The Great Hall there would be no hunting down of stragglers.

As soon as The Board of Governors had laid down the law Drake had told his staff. He’d told them what they were expected to do and they knew how unhappy he was with being forced into anything. It didn’t matter what side of the divide he came down on, his thoughts about the event were of no importance. Drake Taggart was simply a man who did not like his hand to be forced.

As the students were finishing Drake stood, a quiet sigh escaping him as he did. As he had on his first night the Headmaster stood before the students. He smiled but his eyes failed to light as they had that evening.

“I suspect you all know of the event taking place in Hogsmeade today - The Egg Hunt.” He paused a moment as his rebellious side reared. How he wished he could just go back to his seat. Leave the students to it. Tell The Board and the damn Minister to go screw themselves. He couldn’t do it though. He wanted this job he had only just begun. “What you don’t know is that you are all to attend.”

Drake held his hands up at the barrage of noise blasted his way as students complained to each other and loudly. “It is out of my hands. Those higher than I want you all in attendance.” He wouldn’t lie to them, that would be disrespectful. He informed them when their voices were dying down.

“In a moment your Head of House will move to The Entrance Hall. On my word you too will leave this room and line up by House. We will walk to the village together; first Gryffindor with Professor Morrigan, second Hufflepuff with Professor Hart, third Ravenclaw with Professor Gray and finally Slytherin with Professor MacLeod. To ensure no one skips out of line the remaining members of staff will flank the lines. Please do not try to skip out, I have no desire to punish anyone today.”

He threw a glance over his shoulder and nodded at the four Heads of House who knew their task. Drake turned back to the students. “You will all be on your best behaviour today. Troublemaking will be dealt with severely.” Though he wasn’t a hard man there could be a certain harsh edge to Drake at times and there was then as he looked over his students. He really didn’t want to punish any one of them and when it came right down to it he was on the side of any grumbler. Still, he was their Headmaster, if any stepped out of line he’d deal with it.

After making his own way to the door Drake turned and now he did manage that happy, enthusiastic smile he wore so well. “Merlin’s sake just try to enjoy yourselves. You never know you might actually like it and - there’s chocolate.” He finished with a shrug as he turned and motioned for them to get up and follow and hoped remaining professors would help hurry the kids along. Of course Drake knew there would be those who would find a way to remain behind, break off on the way or disappear once they got there. He could only do his best though and try to get as many there as possible. He wouldn't even bat an eye or show he had noticed if his own staff took their leave so how could he really stop the kids?

When all were ready Drake led the way out the doors and down the steps. Estel joined him there matching her speed to his long strides as they now both walked the school to Hogsmeade. Along the way there wasn’t much incident, just a few of the more annoyed students needing a stern telling off. Drake could only hope that was all it would take the rest of the day and that too many hadn't already managed to scamper. He well knew just how sneaky kids could be when they were determined.

After leading them through the village Drake walked straight towards a large field where a big section of fencing had clearly been recently removed. The field though not so full of people yet seemed quite full anyway. There was a white tent covered in decorated eggs where people could get refreshments. A smaller tent had a sign for face painting on the side. He noticed the paddock that must be for the lambs and chicks of the petting zoo. Tables had been set up all around the edges except at and near the further side of the field which remained free. Drake could just make out the trail there and had to assume someone had cleared that up a bit too.

They walked in so far before Drake turned and held up his hands to stop those behind. Here was a fine place to wait for this event to kick off. Spotting some of his professors walking along their house groups having words with students they felt required Drake moved to do the same.

While Poppy had complained at the announcement and on the way to the village it had been quietly done and with very little feeling behind it. Aiden had asked her to hang out with him so even before she’d been told she had to go Poppy had been intending to be in the village. It was annoying though that had she felt otherwise she’d have been forced along. At least some good came from it - the other Slytherins were too preoccupied to pick at her about Aiden and any other muggleborn they could think of lately.

The other Slytherins were the reason Poppy was quite looking forward to the day. It was funny how Aiden was now a much better option for spending time with than any of the housemates she shared classes with. She knew that it only made things worse for her to be seen with the muggleborn boy but, like many teenagers Poppy had a stupidly stubborn streak. The more they niggled at her the more likely she was to think screw them and hang out with Aiden. Though she still hoped word of it never, ever got back to Granny Selwyn.

When the Headmaster stopped them all Poppy stood at the very back. She supposed someone was going to say something to kick things off and wondered why adults insisted on being boring. Granny Sewlyn had explained it to her of course, many times but Poppy still didn’t see the point. Speeches, speeches, speeches. It’s like once you got to a certain age you suddenly started getting your kicks out of speeches.

Unnoticed by the professors Poppy wandered away from the Slytherins. Since there was no way to not be seen with Aiden that day the girl decided she might as well go find him straight away. No point hanging around herself, looking at her feet while they waited for someone she wasn’t going to pay attention to anyway. Might as well pass that time with someone she could talk to.

After spotting the boy she wondered if she should just go right over to him and say hi. The notion was dismissed straight away since he was much closer to the other Gryffindors than she’d have liked. “Aiden!” She called out as quietly as she could while still having a hope of being heard. "Aiden!" Poppy shouted a little louder the second time. She waved when he looked her way.

Aiden was finishing his dinner, chatting with his friends, when the Headmaster rose to give his remarks. That wasn’t a common thing during most meals so he, and the kids around him, quieted down to hear what was going on. At the announcement that the Ministry’s egg hunt was going to be a mandatory event for the kids of the school, he sighed. He didn’t understand how the adults supposedly running their world managed to miss steps like that so very badly.

Having events that would expose the magical world to what was going on with everyone else on the planet was a good thing. However, forcing them to attend was just going to get people to dig in their feet and harden their beliefs. It was ridiculous, and a terrible idea but clearly they didn’t have anyone with a tie to the real world advising them.

The explosion of outrage from so many of the students – even some of the muggleborn – was loud and almost overwhelming, if entirely expected. Even the Professors didn’t seem that excited about what was going on, though they weren’t quite so vocal about their displeasure.

He frowned at the description of the escort on the way down to the village and he wondered if that was something that the Ministry had demanded or if that was something that the Headmaster had arranged – it wasn’t going to go over well. Already, it seemed like this endeavor of the Ministry was going to backfire for them. They’d have been much better off just trying to make an event that people would actually want to attend.

Once they’d been given the signal, Aiden rose with the rest and filed into line in the Great Hall. This was just stupid. The Headmaster had the right of it though – he’d been hoping to attend anyway, so he shouldn’t get all bent out of shape and have a miserable time just out of spite. By the time they arrived at the field and the games, he was laughing and joking with his friends again. Since they had to be there anyway, he was determined to make the most of it.

As they were brought to a stop, any coherence to the student group was almost immediately lost as they all milled around together. Aiden was a little surprised to hear Poppy calling out his name already – he could only assume she’d been catching a lot of shit for how much time they’d spent talking together lately and he was glad she didn’t seem to be letting it bother her. He’d been getting a couple of strange looks from some of the more zealous muggle supporters from the House but they knew better than to try to start anything.

“Hey Poppy,” he greeted happily as he excused himself from his friends and made his way over to join her.

With a teasing grin he added, “I’m glad you decided to take me up on my offer to join me here today.”

There had been young kids from the village running around since the fences had been brought down and the games and booths had been set up. Minister Stewart had actually enjoyed roaming among them and helping their parents to keep an eye on things to make sure that nothing was broken as the little ones ran around and had a good time. He spent most of the morning playing with the kids and chatting with the grownups that came to attend – only slowing down as the students from Hogwarts made their appearance.

Brandon handed one of the little ones back to her mother before making his way toward the entry to the field where the students set up their line and tapped his wand to his throat as he cast a Sonorous Charm on himself. His voice rang out over the clearing; audible to everyone in attendance.

“Thank you for coming!”

“Today we’re going to experience just a little bit of what large quantities of the muggle world does for their Easter holidays…” his speech almost rambled on to give a brief explanation of what the Easter Holidays meant. Touching briefly on the religious connotations of the holiday before moving on to the secular celebrations for which most people actually knew the day.

He touched briefly on the pagan roots of the celebration before finishing, “I’m sorry for taking up so much of your time when there are so many fun activities to take part in today! We have craft booths and games set up around the field. There is an Easter Egg hunt that has been set out for anyone that cares to participate!”

“Please feel free to wander and have a good time!”

With that, he cancelled the Sonorous Charm and began to pick his way through the field toward the Headmaster. Almost as though the end of his speech had been the gun at the beginning of the race, the kids seemed to scatter to the winds – presumably looking for something fun to do that could keep their attention.

“Headmaster Taggart, it’s wonderful to finally meet you,” he greeted the man with a wide, friendly smile and an outstretched hand.

Gideon was actually quite pleased to be going into the village though he didn’t let it show as they all were made walk there. In fact, he didn’t show much of any feeling as he walked along with his head down, eyes on his toes. In truth though he’d thought about attending the egg hunt when he’d first read about it in the paper. He didn’t have much knowledge about this muggle Easter thing but he did know there was chocolate and apparently a lot of it. More than any one person needed he’d heard others say.

Standing on his tiptoes he tried his best to see over the heads before him but it was useless. He gave up, bumping back down with a quiet sigh. He looked around himself as the people nearer seemed to close in as they chatted and complained amongst themselves. Feelings of claustrophobia set in and Gideon knew he had to move.

Taking slow steps and counting his breaths Gideon turned and walked through the Slytherins he was in amongst. Soon and without too much of a panic on the way he soon found himself nearer the back of the group, in an area that was quite clear, less anxiety inducing. He quickly started to wish that something would hurry up and happen already. He didn’t know why these events always took so long to actually get started.

His wish was quickly granted when the Minister started speaking. Gideon paid attention as best he could but so many of what was being said was a total loss on him. By the time the speech was done the young boys head was spinning as he tried to factor all the new information into his world view.

The large grouping of students began to break up and Gideon decided he may as well get moving again too. He walked out into the field trying and failing to look everywhere at once.

Desmonda Stanis

Quote

Having arrived extra early as per Autumn Winters order Desmonda was so deep in her pit of despair she was beginning to wonder if she’d ever make it out. She’d been tasked with handing out maps to anyone wanting to take part in the egg hunt. The only bonus to that was she’d been told to stand near the trail so she didn’t have to listen as the Minister droned on. Instead she got to go over every insult she thought applied to the man while stewing in her egg costume.

The costume was by far the very worst part of a day full of terrible things. A garish yellow coloured egg with pink spots is what had been handed to her that morning. Then came the matching pink tights and short yellow wellington boots. Desmonda still didn’t know how she’d managed to not hex the Winters woman on the spot and took the consequences - whatever they may be. Though her head was thankfully free of the hell it did little to help cool her down and she wondered if her skin would start slipping from her bones before the day was done.

The children all around were coming in a very, very close second to the egg she was trapped in. Desmonda had always thought she loved kids. Half an hour into having to deal with the little delights and her mind had turned completely. After hours listening to them screech and seeing them run around all over the place at once she could have happily throttled them all. Everywhere she’d looked there was one of the grubby creatures. Every turn she made brought another closer to her. Worse now she had to deal with the older children too and she knew long before that day that she didn’t have much time for them. It wasn’t just the muggleborn spawn she was hating either, purebloods were included right in with them.

Just as she was properly getting into her twentieth muttered rant of the day Desmonda felt a tug at her back. She turned and snapped, “What?” Looking down she sighed seeing a young girl and beside her an older boy. Where were their parents? Not for the first time that day she wondered why people created these things just to up and leave them at seemingly the first opportunity. With a needlessly aggressive snap of her wrist Desmonda gave the two a map before moving away, in annoying waddling steps that had chased away the tiny bit of dignity she’d managed to hold onto hours before.

She didn’t go far before she stopped and huffed. Desmonda had heard the threats barked by that dreadful Winters woman even if she had appeared zoned out at the time. As she spotted another unattended child making its way towards her she had to ask herself what exactly she’d done to deserve this.

University life hadn’t turned out to be as easy as Ianto had expected it to be. He could get through the work set but the sheer amount of it and his internship at Ollivanders left little time for himself. With the end of year fast approaching and finding himself at a rare loose end the young man had decided to pop along and see what this egg hunt was going to be like.

He hated these types of occasions in the muggle world. The community coming together and celebrating always sickened him since he often knew how much the people in attendance actually hated one another. But this was different. As far as he was aware this was the first actual muggle event the Ministry had put on and openly too. It was history in the making he supposed and he may as well go along.

When he arrived he’d taken some time to walk around and seen that this event was as boring as it would be in the world he’d left behind. At least there was ice cream he consoled himself that the day wouldn’t be a waste as he joined the queue. Soon enough, with a cone in hand he was on his way again walking the edges of the field just as the students and professors arrived.

Stopping he leaned against the fence to watch them. It was amazing really that they weren’t scattered around more and noisier. He’d certainly never seen as large a group of muggle school children escorted with such little fuss. His gaze fell on the new Headmaster and he could only assume it was that man’s doing.

The Minister was soon speaking and having heard it all before Ianto tuned the man out. His cone was much more important than some politicians waffle. While the man droned on Ianto’s eyes wandered around the field over the children and their mostly tired looking parents. The people in costume brought him some small amount of amusement for a few seconds before he was taking a closer look at the women.

Some were quite pretty. One woman had what looked like the softest olive skin that anyone had ever had and long flowing brown hair. Ianto hopped up onto the fence to watch her having no intention of making an approach. That wasn’t what he was there for, his day was one of observing… and maybe eating more ice cream since he was almost finished his cone.

She moved on, out of his sight just as he popped the last of the cone wafer into his mouth. It would have been a shame if he hadn’t almost immediately spotted someone even hotter than she. Another egg girl handing something out at the far end of the field. He found himself thinking he might approach her and try his luck. It had been a while since he’d tried his luck with anyone and really he didn’t want to get out of practice too much.

People started moving, the Minister’s speech obviously finished. Ianto was content to stay where he was perched on the fence. Pretty girl watching was a decent enough past time while he waited an acceptable amount of time before getting another cone. He didn’t want to appear greedy even if the ice cream was close to being out of this world.

“You’re a pig Michael Crawford!” The girl Mickey was barely keeping up with snapped bringing Mickey up short. Sure, he could sometimes be called a pig and it would even be warranted but in this instance he knew he definitely had not been piggish in any way. If anything the girl was being most unreasonable.

“Don’t call me Michael.” He answered as he jogged beside her angry strides again. “And how does going to a quidditch match make me a pig?” He didn’t understand this at all and was questioning why he’d even bothered to try the girlfriend thing. So far all it seemed to be was more hassle than it was really worth.

The girl stopped and turned to face him causing him to come to a halt too. “If you don’t know I’m not going to tell you.” Was the answer she gave as she crossed her arms and glared.

Mickey stared at her, completely lost for what he was supposed to say or do. Irritation mounted within him at the situation he found himself in all because of her. Here he was at an event he didn’t even want to come to arguing about an issue he didn’t even know was an issue. A week before he’d gone to a quidditch match instead of spending time with her, even though he didn’t know she wanted to spend time together and now apparently he was supposed to pay for it, be sorry even. He hadn’t known she was bothered until they were on their way through the village. A whole week it hadn’t bothered her but now suddenly it was a problem.

He sighed and scrubbed a hand over his face. “Forget it.” He told her though he didn’t mean his question. “Just forget it. I’m done. You’re too much work.” And with that he walked away from her only taking a little bit of satisfaction from the look of pure shock on her face.

Once in the field he looked around for something to do. Maybe he’d find someone to hang around with but not his uni friends. His uni friends could keep for later when they would give him a well deserved ribbing about his mental now ex-girlfriend. Seeing nothing even slightly interesting he took to wandering and hoping something fun would present itself.

Xolani breathed in the air as she wandered through Hogsmeade. Spring had brought with it warmer weather- thank Merlin!- and the lovely scent of flowers drifting on the light breezes. She had been only too happy to ditch the college campus for the day. The fact that there was an egg hunt meant no nevermind to her. She had intended on being in the village for the entirety of the day.

Her eyes locked in on a fellow college student as he stood in line for an ice cream. That was an idea of the first order, right there. She queued in a few people behind him. Frosty treat in hand, she passively followed him as he wandered and settled at the fence. With no one else to talk to or anywhere else she needed to be, she perched near him continuing to idly watch.

A grin cracked her face as she focused in on what seemed to have caught his attention. Spring was certainly in the air! As intent as he'd been, he hadn't gone after the lovely woman. What a surprise. Xolani regarded her and shrugged. She probably would have made a move- if she swung that way.

"The first was prettier," she informed Ianto as his gaze settled on someone else.

Isadora looked around the Ravenclaw table at the Headmaster's announcement. She wasn't put out by this at all, even if it was a forced issue. They would be going to Hogsmeade and that was her favorite place. She loved the castle as well, obviously, but to get out and go somewhere instead of where all their classes were... it would be a breath of fresh air.

So as the houses lined up, she joined her house's line and filed nicely out down to the town. Maybe they'd actually get a chance to sneak into a shop or two while they were there.

That hope seemed to be confirmed- they could wander. That was lovely. But first, hunting a few eggs so she had some chocolate to sustain her.

Lottie was secretly intrigued by the idea of a 'Egg hunt', especially since it seemed to have chocolate as a requirement. Being surrounded by a ton of her own house members, however, she chose to hide the excitement behind an unimpressed look. Having years of managing her facial expressions, she was confident that she would be able to pull this off without alerting the rest of her house mates. She didn't need more talk about her if she was to show any form of enjoyment for a muggle tradition.

"Can you believe this?" Apollymi whispered from beside her, a look of true disgust on her face. Lottie gave a shake of her head, leaning closer to whisper, "Wonder if we can sneak off once we reach Hogsmeade?" She secretly hoped that there would be measures put in place to stop students from doing it, having an excuse of 'We had to do this' was easier to go along with. "Hopefully." She heard her cousin whisper back.

With a forced sigh she stood up with the rest of her housemates as they were called, walking alongside her cousin as she followed the group towards Hogsmeade. She made small talk with Apollymi but her cousin seemed to be in a foul mood and Lottie really didn't want to add to that by talking her ear off.

Once they reached the village there was an awfully long, at least for Lottie, speech about Easter and the ideals behind it. She had no interest, whatsoever, in it and really just wanted to go and find some of this promised chocolate. Finally, finally the minister seemed to be finished with the speech and allowed the students to enter the town.

"I'm going to find a quiet spot, hopefully where no one can find me." Apollymi stated, not even waiting for an answer before turning on her heel and striding off. Lottie had been hoping to spend some time with her cousin but it seemed that luck wasn't on her side. Still at least there seemed to be an array of activities to try out.

Glancing a quick look around, she trailed behind a few Gryffindors who were excitedly chatting about the egg hunt, hoping that they would be able to lead her to said Egg hunt and, more importantly, the chocolate.

One would think getting rid of Norwood would have brought some sort of sense back to Hogwarts but it appeared this new headmaster, although in Penelope’s eyes he resembled more of a homeless vagrant than anything worth respecting, was to follow along the same ridiculous path set by the previous lunatic running the school. He could pretend all he liked but Penelope didn’t believe for one minute that the whole affair was “out of his hands”. Complete poppycock if you asked her, particularly after his threat of punishment for anyone trying to skip out. Had he had any sympathy for being forced to do something against one’s will he would not take to punishing defiance.

Snorting at the headmaster’s words Penelope rose from her seat and followed along with the rest of her house.

It was a decent day, at least it wasn’t raining, so Penelope didn’t mind very much the stroll to the village. She rather enjoyed it. She would not enjoy the festivities though, this she had already decided and she was certainly not going to partake in any silly egg hunts.

After the minister had finished speaking Penelope went to find a nearby place to sit and took to reading a book she’d brought to pass the time.

Easter had always been a major holiday in the McGrath family, and Liam had countless memories of Easter Egg Hunts from his childhood. As soon as he’d heard that there was going to be an Easter celebration in Hogsmeade he’d decided he was going to attend, and so he was one of the few people that apparently truly didn’t care that they were being ‘forced’ to attend a party and presumably have a good time.

He lined up with the rest as they were led down to the village and listened impatiently as the Minister gave his impromptu-Muggle Studies lesson. As much as it bored him, he figured it was probably nice to explain what was going on for the people that legitimately had never heard of something like this before. Finally, they were freed and allowed to wander the grounds on their own. He’d lost sight of Christian and Emma in the crowds – but figured it was all too likely that they’d wandered off to find some time alone anyway. He could always catch up with them later.

While he’d been looking forward to the day – the other Gryffindors around him were maybe just a little bit ‘too’ into it, so he decided it was time to make his escape. Slowly, he reduced his pace until they were beginning to pull ahead and then turned to head the other direction

It worked marvelously too, for about a second before he just about ran face first into a Slytherin girl that had been trailing just a few paces behind them. After doing his best to skid to a halt when faced with this newest obstruction in his path, he grinned as he recognized her from class. For the life of him, he didn’t think they’d ever actually spoken to each other though.

“Hi!” he greeted.

“Charlotte, right?”

Though it wasn’t the type of social gathering Autumn enjoyed attending she found that the morning was passing nicely enough. She’d had her fun with the purebloods while giving them their costumes. It was beneath her to do such a petty thing she knew but since that damn Selwyn woman had begun plotting with Morrigan the purebloods had been too uppity for Autumn’s liking. Certain issues had cropped up at The Ministry and though Autumn couldn’t prove who was responsible she knew it was one or more of the pures and the others knew too. The costumes were her warning, a reminder of the power they no longer had to wield or benefit from and a stick she would be poking them with repeatedly.

For most of the morning Autumn was checking and rechecking that everything would go without a hitch. She walked the field, stopping to chat with this Ministry worker and that. Mostly she ignored the people who had come early and lingered about - an easy thing to do since none approached her directly. While The Minister gave his speech Autumn stood off to the side as she listened, a small smile on her lips.

With the day officially started and the Minister greeting the new Headmaster Autumn walked the field again. She stopped to chat to one of her colourful eggs but soon got bored when the girl looked like she was about to burst into tears. There was no fun in picking at the truly weak people - they were far too easy.

Moving on she spotting a much better target. A man she sincerely hoped wouldn’t be blubbing two seconds after she approached. She’d hate to have given him too much credit since it was so grudgingly given in the first place. Approaching him from behind she stopped and waited until the crowd of kids around him had cleared off, rushing to whatever it was that had caught their attention.

“Well, aren’t you the cutest, grumpiest bunny wabbit I ever did see.”

More than anything, she would have liked to be able to give the entire event a miss but she could feel her father’s eyes on her and she knew that just wasn’t going to work. She drug her feet during the entire walk and waited impatiently as everyone took their sweet time getting things started.

During the down time before the Minister began speaking, she used the time and crowd to put some more distance between her dad and herself so that once they were released she could get away without having to deal with him. Finally, things started and rolled her eyes with the rest of them as the Minister gave his little talk. As far as she was concerned, everyone who needed to know what Easter was already did – the rest were lost causes.

When they finally were free to go, she turned to flee from the group toward the field as the rest of the crowd scattered. She figured that she might as well nab some chocolate before she tried to make her way back up to the school. She’d slipped her hands into the pockets of her jeans and stalked toward where the egg hunt was supposed to be happening.

Her thoughts were pretty well scattered as she suddenly found herself almost stumbling over someone else. Just as she was about to apologize, she recognized who it was and snarled, “Why can’t you watch where you’re going?”

“You’re going to get someone hurt again with your obliviousness.”

“Unless that’s you’re plan,” she finished with a glare.

When Aiden noticed her Poppy began to worry. It hadn’t occurred to her before but if she were in a group and someone called on her she would probably invite them over, asking them to join the group she was with. The second the thought was in her head it was all she could think about, or rather all she could worry about. It all ran through her mind so quickly how she would simply have to refuse and probably slope back off to take her dose verbal abuse from the Slytherins. It was one thing to hang around with one mudblood but if she were to hang out with a bunch of Gryffindors… Well, she might as well just go back to the castle and pack her bags immediately. There would be no coping with the fallout from that.

Luckily for her Aiden asked her to do no such thing. Poppy smiled brightly and let out a relieved breath when he took his leave of the group. “Hey.” she greeted him just as happily though she was slightly nervous and fidgeting with her fingers curling her hair.

“Well I thought that since I have to be here anyway.” She joked. “You should know that all blame will be on you if it’s dreadful.”

The Minister started speaking soon after they’d met up and since Poppy had no intention of listening she didn’t bother. She looked around herself catching a couple Slytherins shooting looks in her direction and another two who laughed and put their heads together when they realised she was looking. It was beginning to annoy her, especially when she took just a second to consider the fact that not one of them had bothered about her until she’d been linked to Aiden. Before that she may as well not even have existed.

Turning her attention back to the Minister who was still going on Poppy took a side-step closer to Aiden. She whispered. “The blame is on you.” She nodded towards the speech loving man to let Aiden know exactly what he was blamed for though she smiled as she did so.

Poppy muttered under her breath about adults and their weird thing for speeches, wondering quietly if the Minister was getting off on it. Though it felt like it would no speech could last forever and Poppy was almost ecstatic when this one did. She didn’t care about the subject and even if she had she would have tuned out about five minutes into it.

“So… what are we supposed to do now?” Poppy questioned the Gryffindor. She was happy enough to follow his lead for the day since she didn’t have the first clue about this muggle gathering.

While the Minister spoke Drake kept a watchful eye on his students. As far as the speech went Drake felt it wasn’t too bad but there was a reason he liked to keep his short. No matter the speaker, no matter the subject whenever they had to listen to a speech kids would get restless. Of course there were some who wanted to and even enjoyed listening as the man spoke but there was always going to be those who got bored quickly. Drake watched as first eyes wandered, bodies fidgeted and then whispered conversations broke out. He spoke to those getting a bit too close to rowdy but otherwise left them to it.

With the speech done Drake stayed where he stood and watched the area they’d entered the field through. If any of the students were going to make a break for it, if they hadn’t done so already they would do it now.

When the Minister stood before him with his hand outstretched Drake took a second to look the man over, his expression blank. There were far too many people around for him to say what he really wanted and like his students he too represented the school. He took the man’s hand and shook it as he fixed a pleasant smile on his face. The politicians weren’t the only ones who could do fake.

“We should have met up sooner.” He responded to the man’s greeting choosing his words carefully. He wouldn’t lie to the man, for Drake this was anything but a pleasure as he held back what he really wanted to say and tried to watch his students as they scattered all around. Not an easy task at all.

“It seems you’ve gone all out with the festivities for the day.” Drake noted. “It’s very like the ones my parents had me attend as a child. Quite enjoyable days.” Though he’d been forced to those himself it was an altogether different kind of force when it was a parent behind it. He was still firmly on the side of his students.

“I do have to say though the forcing of the students may prove a mis-step. Most of them are at that age where they simply have to rebel against everything.” It was true. The majority of his students were teenagers and most teenagers were always going to work against the adults. It was just a natural part of being in those awkward teen years - adults were old and boring so it stood to reason that everything they did would be old and boring too.

From the corner of his eye Ianto watched his fellow student perch on the fence near him. He didn’t pay her much mind other than to look at her ice cream with wanting eyes once he’d finished his own. Though he quickly settled back into his lady watching he did wonder about the girl close to him, what her name was and if she’d make an approach.

Ianto smiled when the girl spoke up. “Maybe a bit tall.” He turned his attention to her fully. “Certainly there was a lot of hair.” Ianto had had his share of mishaps with girls sporting long hair - it got everywhere, even the places a person really didn’t want it to get.

“If she comes back this way then maybe I’ll know for sure… do a comparison of pretty egg women.”

He glanced again at the treat in Xolani’s hand wondering if he was just being silly waiting before he got himself another. Ianto slid himself from his perch and walked the short distance between them. He held his hand out once he was beside the girl. “Ianto Barnes. Lovely to meet you.” He put the charm on a bit but aimed for the humour in the situation rather than any hitting on vibes. It was always good to take the mickey out of the stuffy people and Ianto had their mannerisms down pat.

Having stopped for a second just to get his bearings Gideon was quite surprised when someone walked into him. He was even more surprised when the snarl from the person hit his ears. Then he turned and any feeling of surprise left him seeing who the speaker was. He bit on his tongue to stop himself from firing her question right back at her and took a step back as his eyes widened.

“I- I wasn’t actually going anywhere.” He informed the angry girl who he knew hated his guts and probably wished him dead.

“Is it yours?” The question had passed his lips before he could stop it and Gideon tried to shrink into himself. He looked around either for help or an escape he did not know but he was looking for something.

“Umm… I…” His hands he clasped behind his back as he took another smaller step away from her. “Yeah… uh sorry.” He didn’t know why he was the one apologising but if it would get him off Blythe’s hit list for the day he had no problem doing it.

When word of the Easter celebration had filtered around the Ministry, Arthur had been unsurprised. It only made sense, after all, that Stewart and his minions would try to do something to offset or coopt the momentum that Richard and Drucilla were starting. Then came the notice that employees would be expected to attend – unless they were required for the continued daily operations of the Ministry itself. Of course, he’d thought to himself, they would need to artificially inflate their numbers so that it would seem like people actually cared.

Then came the visit from Autumn Winters and he’d been informed that he would need to wear one of the costumes to the event; considering that he didn’t have any work that he needed to do until after dark. It had been remarkably difficult to not spit in her face and walk out. If he’d have had any sort of use for the cause after leaving, he’d have done so – but the only thing he was good for was staying in his current position and trying to help arrange things between the Purebloods and the vampires.

It was absolutely soul crushing to have to wander about in the stupid rabbit costume. As though it were specially designed to make him hate his life, it didn’t even have a mask he could hide behind to conceal his thoughts about the day. He was forced to paste a smile on his face and not just start kicking the little mudblood brats that came running up to him for some of the candy that he had in the stupid basket they’d given him to carry.

When the latest batch of cretins turned to run off toward whatever else it was that had caught their attention, he sighed deeply and weighed the likelihood of being able to make it into town and get a drink before his absence of noticed. Then came the voice that he had learned to loath, oh so quickly. At first, nothing came to mind that he could say as he turned and just stared at her.

Despite his best attempts, he was sure the hatred and humiliation could be seen in his eyes as he forced his “kiddy smile” back onto his face and replied, “Well, thank you for the compliment.”

“Is there something I can help you with?”

He looked her over and added, “I’d offer you some chocolate but it looks like might have had a bit too much already…”
