Care of Magical Creatures 4th Year, Unicorns
Raegan Bellamy
 Posted: Apr 3 2018, 03:12 PM
Quote

The four beautiful Unicorns seemed quite content in the paddock, allowing Rae to feed them apples that was resting within the palm of her hand. Around her ankles bounced the three young foals, who were pure gold in colour and hornless, who kept trying to catch the smaller of the three. It was just her luck that the Forbidden Forest was home to a herd of Unicorns and was, after a show of kindness and a sack of apples, easy to get the unicorns into the paddock for her lesson.

"Now there are some students coming, I promise they will be just as nice as me." She coo'd softly, stroking one of the fully grown unicorns who she had taken a particular liking too. Just as she finished talking she heard the chatter of students and, with a last pet to the unicorn, she turned to meet them at the entrance of the paddock.

"Hello Students." She called when they all arrived, a wide smile on her face. "As you can see, we will be studying unicorns in this lesson." She stepped aside so that the creatures were visible to the students. "There are four fully grown unicorns, pure white, and three foals, golden in colour."

One of the little foal's seemed curious as to the new arrivals and bounded over, nearly tripping over his front legs. While the other two stayed close to the older unicorns they did watch the approaching foal who stopped just behind Rae and peered up at the students. With an encouraging smile and a small pet to the little one's head she turned to her students again.

"As you can see, the foals are more friendly than the fully grown Unicorns. Fully grown Unicorns much prefer the touch of a women, so it may be difficult for any of you boys to get close to them." She gave a cheeky grin. "But if you show a little kindness and respect I'm sure we can tempt one over." Clearing her throat she gestured to the little foal by her side. "The foals, however, are much more curious and will allow anyone to touch them."

Raegan moved aside to pull the sack of apples, carrots and pears closer to the students, a burst of nervousness bubbling up, nervous about the reactions of her students. What if they thought this wasn't interesting? With a firm shake of her head she continued with her lesson, pushing her doubts aside.

"We will be taking a hands on approach today, after the lecture part of this lesson, and each student will be able to feed one of the unicorns. The sack here contains three different types of treats, you can try each one and see which one your unicorn prefers." It was always fun to see what treat the unicorns prefer, each one having a different preference.

"Now onto the talking part of the lesson." The part that she knew the students weren't going to be thrilled about, not when there were actual unicorns right in front of them. Rae certainly wouldn't be pleased with it. "Can anyone tell me what parts of the unicorn are used within the magical world and what for?"

The crowd chattered loudly as it made its way out toward the paddock where class was to be held; everyone seemed at least a little bit excited about what was going to be covered during the lesson. Everyone but Blythe, who trailed several paces behind everyone else. It had just occurred to her how quickly the year was flying by and how much she wasn’t looking forward to going home for the summer. Not looking forward to the time off from school felt really strange, but the last thing she wanted to do right now was spend more one-on-one time with her dad and there wasn’t going to be much chance of avoiding him when neither of them had anything else to do.

She looked up as she heard some of the older girls coo and start making a big deal about something, only to come to a stop as she spotted the Unicorns up ahead. They’d always been one of her favorite creatures and it hadn’t been something she’d thought about that there was a good chance of being able to see one during this class.

Her pace increased and she’d caught up with everyone else as she approached the teacher, and the subject of the day’s lessons. She gasped and her hand flashed up to her mouth as the baby unicorn ambled toward them, tripping over itself. It might have been the cutest thing that she’d ever seen in her life.

When Professor Bellamy said that they were going to be taking a more hands on approach she practically began bouncing with anticipation. They just had to get through the lesson first – something that shouldn’t be too hard, Blythe thought, as she’d done a lot of reading on them in the past.

At the first question, her hand shot wide and without waiting to be called upon, she answered, “The hair from their tails and mane can be used in making wands.”

Nate laughed along with his friends as they trooped out to Care of Magical Creatures. The class was interesting enough, he supposed. However, more importantly, it was often a chance to get outside during the day and he’d be damned if he was going to pass that up. He was briefly jostled and he looked up in surprise as Blythe brushed past him, almost knocking him into his friend. Despite his best efforts, he really couldn’t remember the last time that she’d been visibly interested in something other than pissing off their Head of House.

With a shrug, he turned his attention back to his friends and continued to chat happily until the class was called to order. Once it was he did his best to pay attention, but any chance of that was shattered by the appearance of the Unicorn foals. Their over-eager clumsiness amused him greatly; most likely because it reminded him so much of himself.

As the questions were asked he stopped paying attention completely – knowing that he wasn’t even going to try to answer them – and focused solely on the nearest golden foal.

Gideon Fawkes

Gideon had arrived at the paddock with the other Slytherin boys. They'd gotten chatting as they'd packed up after their last lesson and Gideon had happily found himself swept along with them to the next. The boys in his year and house were okay, not friends not really but he could spend some time with them before he felt to awkward and had to leave. It didn't happen often thanks to his shyness holding him back even with these people he knew but Gideon was always pleased when it did.

Arriving at the fence the four stood together as they looked over the unicorns and their foals. Gideon could only wish that he could appear as uninterested as the rest for he knew he could never pull it off. His face lit with delight as he watched the little foals scramble about as their own legs seemed to work against them.

He didn't like answering in class. He especially didn't like answering in classes he shared with Blythe just incase it made her notice his existance again. He raised his hand then though thinking that since her father wasn't teaching it this class should be a safe bet. Most she could really do was glare.

After the Gryffindor had answered Gideon supplied his own. "The horn is used in potion brewing. The hair is also an ingredient in some potions, usually taken from the tail. Oh and it's also good binding for bandages because it's so strong." Gideon had always liked unicorns much to his father's disgust.

Arwen bounded down to her lesson with a small group of her friends, happily chatting away. She enjoyed this lesson, it was usually one where they got to see creatures up close, and was a great way of getting out of the Castle for a while. Of course in the Winter she was less thrilled about it, but it was nothing a simple coat couldn't fix.

Her friend gave a small gasp as they approached the paddock, spinning to have a gander at what had caused that reaction from her friend. As soon as she spotted the small foals and unicorns she couldn't contain the gasp, mimicking her friend unintentionally. They were just so cute!

One of her friends, Victorié, grabbed her hand and pulled her forward, nearly tripping her over, so they could get closer to the paddock and, in turn, closer to the unicorns. They just looked so majestic, even the small foal who had a close call with the floor. "I want ten." She whispered to Tori, who giggled.

They were going to feed them? She pinched the inside of her elbow, just to be sure she wasn't dreaming a very lucid dream. This was going to be an amazing lesson, if only they could just get through the talking part. At least two of her classmates had offered up answers, she couldn't think of anything they had missed either, so hopefully the interactive part would be happening soon.

Talia could scarcely believe her luck. Everything else from the day evaporated from her mind, even what Professor Bellamy had said, the moment she caught sight of the unicorns. Her breath caught in her throat as she sidled up beside Nate. She practically vibrated with excitement.

Even if she had heard the questions posed by the professor, she would never have been able to find her voice to offer up any responses. Instead she stood beside Nate, trying not to make a fool of herself with her delight while also trying to decide which unicorn she should try to approach. The foals were all too adorable, especially the curious one but she found her attention drawn to the more prudent adult farthest away from the class.

Raegan was pleasantly surprised when a student immediately responded to her question, and with such a great answer as well. “Exactly, Miss Morrigan. Five points to Gryffindor. As Miss Morrigan has just said, the hair from the tail and mane of a unicorn is often used in wands. I suspect a few of you may be in possession of one of these wands.” She glanced around her students, a miniscule smile on her face. She, herself, was lucky enough to have a wand with unicorn hair as the core. “Unicorn hairs are chosen for wands for a number of reasons, one being that these are often the part of unicorns that shed often. The second is because they produce the most consistent magic, least subject to fluctuations and blockages, and the most faithful of wands.”

As another student supplied an answer, a wide smile worked its way onto Rae’s face. She was overjoyed that the students seemed happy to participate within the lesson. “Right again, well done Mr Fawkes. Five points to Slytherin.” It made her pleased that she had such bright students in her class.

“Miss Morrigan, Mr Fawkes, because you provided such great answers you can be the first two to feed the unicorns. If you would like to stand next to the gates of the paddock where the four baskets are, I’ll encourage the unicorns over.” She turned towards the rest of the class. “Can I also have Mr Essex and Miss Ivers over here. Can the rest of you line up behind these five students please?”

With her students in place she moved towards the back of the paddock, coaxing the four, fully grown unicorns towards the first line of students. She was able to persuade each one to stand in front of the first four students. “What I would like you to do is to feed these unicorns, you’ll have to watch them to see which food they prefer.” With that said she flicked her wand and floated a handful of fruit into each of the student’s baskets.

“Now while you do this, make sure you are showing respect and kindness to the unicorns, especially the boys.” She smiled encouragingly at her first four students. “But most of all, have fun.”

She frowned again when the Professor talked about people having Unicorn wands. It was something she’d brought up and it still bothered her – she’d ended up with stupid dragon parts in hers. Granted, it worked great and did what she needed it to do, but she still wished she’d have gotten a Unicorn wand. Blythe’s hand drifted to her wand – she felt bad thinking poorly of it.

Her pride at having an answer to the first question was cut short as she heard a familiar – and oh so hated – voice speak up from the other side of the crowd. It was a fortunate thing for everyone involved that the term ‘glaring daggers’ was just a metaphor or she’d have been on her way to Azkaban as her rage filled gaze settled on Gideon Fawkes. The asshole didn’t even have the common decency to cower under her gaze.

“What?” she seethed quietly as Fawkes was allowed to be one of the first to interact with the marvelous creatures. Briefly, she considered passing – out of a desire not to have anything to do with the boy – but she quickly kicked that idea. She wasn’t going to pass up the chance to touch a Unicorn. Slowly, she began to move and made her way to the paddock gate.

If Nate was going to be called up too, why couldn’t she have been paired with him? He was nice – if a little goofy – and fun to talk with. Certainly better than some slimy snake. Again, she turned her glare on the other boy, hoping he’d drop dead. Unfortunately, she had no such luck.

All of her anger and concern washed away as the creatures approached the fence. Her hand was almost shaking as she dug the treats out of her basket and offered them to the Unicorn. A bright smile spread across her face as the beast lowered its head to devour the grapes that she’d ended up with and she whispered to it, “You’re so beautiful… yes you are… I wish you could come home with me.”

Talia’s arrival at his side brought a smile to his face.

“Hey you,” he greeted softly, “aren’t they adorable?”

The sound of his name coming from the Professor’s lips surprised Nate and he looked around in concern. To the best of his knowledge, he hadn’t been doing anything that would have gotten him in trouble and he vaguely considered that maybe he should have been listening to what was going on. One of the kids next to him chuckled and shoved him toward the front with a quick whisper, “Go meet the unicorns, doofus.”

Meeting and greeting with the adult unicorns wasn’t at all what Nate wanted to do, but it was too late to back out gracefully – as though there had ever been a time that would have been okay. With a smile, he jogged to the front and lined up where the Professor pointed out that he should be standing before checking to make sure that Talia was sticking with him. Her excitement was almost palpable.

Respect and kindness… Nate could do that… or so he thought before immediately forgetting about the basket of fruit he was holding and reaching out to try and pet the unicorn that had come to a stop in front of him.

Gideon’s face broke with a huge smile when he was awarded points. He rarely ever earned points for his house since most of the time he was trying not to be noticed. The smile slipped when he realised he’d have to now put himself out in front of the whole class and next to Blythe. Her outburst didn’t make him feel any better about it.

Only the chance at getting to pet a unicorn could have gotten Gideon’s feet moving then. With his eyes on the ground Gideon walked where he was told but put and stood at the basket next to the girl who despised him.

After taking an apple from the basket Gideon held it out towards the unicorn before him on his flattened hand. He knew before the teacher had told them that unicorns were more wary of boys so he decided not to speak in case his voice caused the creature distress. He waited while the unicorn watched him, edging it’s nose closer and closer until he could easily reach out his other hand and lightly stroke it’s head. The huge smile was back in place when the unicorn allowed it.
