Closer to the end of the night than the start Maz was to be found on the balcony. Partly hidden in the corner she had a bottle of vodka and blackcurrant and a small plate of sandwiches on the wall beside her. She’d been surprised to find sandwiches at such an over the top occasion, she thought they’d have been too plain for the obvious show-off the night was. It was a nice surprise, especially for her stomach since she’d skipped dinner earlier. If a person wanted to spend the night drinking they didn’t go near a full meal, finger foods were the way to go.

Standing there for a long time she enjoyed listening to the music from inside while drinking and nibbling. Of course there had been others there too, they left her alone and she did the same for them. Except for that couple who had gotten a little too over-friendly in public that she’d growled at. When they looked around they didn’t see her which made it all the more hilarious when they rushed back into the ballroom after she growled again.

Going back inside wasn’t something she wanted to do having come outside to escape the other guests. During the night she’d flitted around people she knew chatting to this and that person but always the glares, the whispers… the rage building in her gut threatening to explode in a punch to someone’s jaw. She had always felt she was good at rising above when she needed. Choosing to strike out when she wanted to. That evening was proving some of her thinking wrong. It was difficult, very difficult. When she was with someone else it was fine, she could distract herself or play it off with jokes or sarcastic remarks. When she was alone she wanted to hit.

There was no way she could though and that really was a shame because some of the people in the house fully deserved a punch to the jaw simply because they were horrible people. Not just to Maz, in general. It wasn’t going to ruin her night or put a damper on it at all for that matter. She’d still get drunk, she’d still be merry and she’d have a damn good time. Even being there alone in the corner she was enjoying herself, she didn’t always need company.

Though, if good company presented itself to her as it did when Caspian walked onto the balcony she wasn’t going to pass it up. Grinning as he walked her way she drank from the bottle as yet unnoticed.

“Well look who it isnae.” She spoke from what could be now thought of as her corner, she’d claimed it at least for the night. “Ah dae hope yer oot here lookin’ fur me eh ask me tae dance cause by this point in the night it’s just plain rude that ye huvnae.”

After all the performances were over and done with and the guests were let loose like cows put out to pasture, Caspian had done a proper raid of the bar and snagged himself a well-aged bottle of whisky which had kept him nourished throughout the evening. Whilst this sort of a party was far from what he liked to waste his time on he’d managed to enjoyed himself. A lot, actually, after having gotten together with a few friends from university, getting drunk and playing billiards; a game he thoroughly enjoyed, particularly when money was involved.

200 galleons richer Caspian now found himself navigating through the ballroom and out onto the balcony for a bit of fresh air.

Hearing a familiar voice coming from the corner he smiled before turning to greet her. "Why hello there." Without asking he snatched the bottle from her hand and took a gulp of whatever was inside. Knowing Maz, undoubtedly booze, and to his delight he was correct.
“As a matter of fact I wasn’t...” He confessed and took another swig before placing it on the wall beside her, “But hey, plans can change, right?”

Taking her by the hand he tugged her from her perch. Then, with a cheeky smile, he slipped his other arm around her waist and pulled her up tightly against his body. “Just so you know, Cowan, I'm an ace dancer."

He actually wasn’t half bad. He knew the standard ballroom dances like waltz and even the Viennese waltz, and he could dance them well because it was one of those things his parents had forced into his education. (They were cruel like that.) He could even do a decent foxtrot but he was nowhere near drunk enough to willingly prance around like a fucking tosser, although the thought did cross his mind to drag Maz back inside and onto the dancefloor and have at it just for the fun of it. But, he didn’t really like dancing and rather didn’t if he could get away with it. He was just craving a smoke, honestly.

"What are you doing out here lurking anyway?" He wondered, still keeping a firm grip around her waist.

“Oi!” Maz exclaimed when the bottle was yanked from her grasp. A mere gut reaction, one thing Maz didn’t actually mind sharing was booze. The more drunk people the merrier as far as she was concerned. There wasn’t much worse in the world than being the only drunk person around. Nobody understood drunk thoughts unless they themselves were bladdered too.

Maz gasped when Caspian said he hadn’t been looking for her, “How rude!” she joked. She smiled softly at the mention of plans changing. “So ah hear.” she answered coyly.

A small surprised sound escaped her when he pulled her from her perch but she was laughing by the time they were pressed so closely together. “Some lassie’s git swept aff their feet… ah git swept aff mah arse.” Her free hand she slid up his back to come to rest on his shoulder. “Ah hope so. Ah’ve totally built ye up in mah head.” She too was a good dancer having had to go through the same lessons as Caspian. Though she enjoyed dancing she always preferred a less formal style.

“Waitin’ tae get you exactly where ah want ye of course.” She smirked and started swaying making Caspian move with her. “Aw ah needed wiz an open bottle eh booze an’ mah super lurkin’ ability.”

Maz leaned back without stopping the motion. Looking him over with a quirked brow Maz and a flirty smile around where her teeth tugged on her bottom lip. “Yer lookin’ fine there, Mr Lancaster.” She leaned back in closing the space between them again. “Quite fine indeed.”

Caspian chuckled at her remark on getting swept of her arse rather than her feet and he nodded. "Somehow that just feels much more appropriate for you." Smirking he added, "And not only because you've got a great arse, but there's just something so very conventional about getting swept off your feet, innit?"

His smirk turned into a smile as she slid her hand up his back to come to rest on his shoulder. They swayed slowly to the sound of the faint music floating out of the opened doors and filled the chilly though pleasant night air.
"Thus hath the candle singed the moth, ey?” He said with a defeated sigh, though, considering he now had Maz in his arms, it didn’t really feel like much of a defeat at all. “Can’t say I mind walking into this trap though, however deviously set up it may be."

As Maz leaned back Caspian’s gaze fell to her mouth where her teeth tugged on her bottom lip. His gaze lingered there for a moment before lifting it to meet her eyes again as he matched her smile with something of a crooked half-smile. When he felt her lean into him again he answered by leaning down to meet her and close that final gap between them. Just as he was almost close enough to touch his lips against hers he froze for a second, seemingly hesitant, but then his half-smile merged into a sly smirk and rather than going for a kiss he lead her into a dip instead.

"Thank you." He said before he brought her back up again. "You clean up pretty nicely too, miss Cowan."

“Pah! Conventional is fur the little ladies that dinnae git tae huv nae fun.” She laughed thinking of the purebloods in the hall who still could be given the little lady title without it being a joke. It always struck Maz as weird that they were happy to live by such old customs when the muggle world had moved on so much.

“Ah well, it’s the deviousness ye like most.” Her smile was wicked, her eyes glinting with a mischievous light.

It would be wrong of her to think she wasn’t somewhat disappointed when he chose not to kiss her but that was the game they played. A game she always enjoyed. The rush of adrenaline and extra bump in the heart was all part of the buzz of playing. She chuckled as she was dipped and just managed to successfully fight the urge to jump the game ahead and kiss him.

Back in an upright position she nodded her head in thanks to her scrubbing up well. Of course she did just that, even the cowboy boots she’d swapped her heels for didn’t take away from her look that night. “Smooth moves, Mister Lanchester.” After just the glimpse of a crooked grin it was her turn to tempt a kiss. Of course she had to go a step further than Caspian and flicking her tongue slowly along his bottom lip seemed like the perfect way to up the game. So that’s exactly what she did. “Very smooth!”

Caspian laughed too but he couldn’t but also feel some sort of pity for the girls she was talking about. He’d always found it strange how they seemed so perfectly content in their boxed in little lives. But each to their own, he supposed…

The sensation of her tongue along his bottom lip had Caspian struggling to resist the temptation to admit defeat and just kiss here there and then. But he was a stubborn sometimes and he rather enjoyed their little game, even though he'd probably enjoy kissing her more. He narrowed his eyes, tutting playfully at her teasing.

"Nah." He answered, "If I were smooth I'd have done something gentlemanly like offered you my jacket... or whatever. But I don’t do that sort of stuff."
Smirking to himself he plotted his revenge as he move his lips along her cheekbone, from her temple then to her ear which he trailed along the curve with the tip his tongue, lightly tickling it.
“You smell nice, Cowan.” He whispered against that delicate skin of the neck just a bit below her ear. As much as Caspian appreciated a fine arse the neck was easily the sexiest part of a woman’s body in his opinion, so why he’d ventured there was beyond him; He was practically setting himself up for failure here.

Though unwillingly he forced himself away from her neck and his eyes found hers again. His hand abandoned its place at her waist and found its way to her face. With the gentlest of touches he skimmed his fingertips along the curve of her cheek. A daring smirk now playing at his lips, “Tell me you’ve nowhere you need to be for the rest of the night.”

Maz laughed lightly at Caspian’s tutting. As if he even expected her to go any further and lose this part of the game.

“An’ whit makes ye ‘hink ah’d want yer stinky jacket exactly?” Maz asked. “Am perfectly capable eh keepin’ masel warm. Been castin’ the warmin’ charm oan masel aw night… stiff nips an’ this dress sadly just do not go.” She’d sounded slightly miffed at the start but she wasn’t and by the time she’d made her joke she was chuckling.

“Mmmhmm.” It was the only response she could give as her body reacted to what he was doing. On the inside it did anyway. The game was much like that of poker so Maz kept her hands where they were, as difficult as that was proving at the time.

“Ah would love tae.” She found she was sincere when she said that. “But while you lot get tae go hame am still oan the clock. Mrs Selwyn wants the performers tae hang around so she kin tawk tae us.” It annoyed Maz no end that she actually had to do what the woman wanted. She’d much rather go off and do what Caspian wanted. Her employees could be hurt though and she had to remind herself that in about ten minutes time she’d give a f**k about them again.

“Ye’ll just have tae come find me another time.” She told Caspian as she pulled her hands round and placed them on his chest. She moved her lips to his pressing them together for just a second before briefly catching his lower lip gently between her teeth. “Dinnae leave it too long… ah kin always find somebody else tae play way.” She smirked, grabbed the bottle of vodka and left, walking back into the ballroom with just a slightly pronounced wiggle, nothing too much.

The music was winding down she noticed as she openly drank from the bottle. The night was coming to an end. She’d had to turn and leave she decided or was just reinforcing the notion in her head. Had she stayed it was very likely that either she’d have been persuaded or she’d have persuaded herself to patch talking to the old bag. Merlin she really was starting to dislike the woman. She better be careful or she’d run her mouth and land herself in deep trouble. When she got to the room they’d to meet in Maz sat beside Starwiz figuring he was in for the worst bollocking the hag would have to dish out.

Caspian snorted at Maz and her little rant. He considered reminding her that the sort of things like offering her his jacket was exactly what he said he wouldn’t do but he figured it was probably not worth the bother. It was kind of funny to see her get a little miffed about it. Besides, she didn’t seem too serious anyway so he just rolled his eyes at her and chuckled.

"Aw come on!" Caspian let out a sigh of disappointed disbelief. “That’s not fair.” He attempted one of those pouts his spoiled little cousin did so well when she didn’t get her way but although spoiled himself Caspian just never could master that brat-pout. Scrapping the pout idea he clicked his tongue in reluctant reconciliation instead. “You wouldn’t want to cross Lady Selwyn.” He said in a resigned voice.

He smirked at her threat to find somebody else to play with. "No one as good as me though, Cowan." He called after her as he watched her walk back inside. Although very disappointing there was always another time, or so he liked to hope. She could have left him the bottle though. That was a bit devious of her since he was too lazy to go back inside to fetch one for himself. He shook his head and muttered, “Cheeky bloody woman.”

From an inside pocket of his jacket he fished up what looked like a regular fag but was actually something the muggles called a spliff, if he remembered correctly, and the reason he’d gone out onto the balcony in the first place. As purist as the lot of them Caspian still found a great deal of amusement dabling in muggle whatnots, perhaps as a form of sarky apostasy or simply to take the piss out of those tightly wound bigots. He wasn’t sure which, maybe a bit of both, but it amused him either way.
Lighting the spliff with the tip of his wand Caspian then took a seat in one of the chairs, determined to enjoy that brief but quiet time alone outside in the chilly night air before he had to go back inside to find his parents so they could go home, or at least find his mother and leave with her. His father could do whatever, Caspian didn’t really care.
