It had surprised Maz to find that after the sun had fallen she didn't start to itch to get back to Jen's. She certainly didn't have any kind of feeling towards Jen's house or indeed her aunt, that wasn't why she tried not to stay out. It was the passing of the night. Maz had never been a great sleeper, not even when she was a small child. Sleep either eluded her or dreams plagued here, there was rarely a happy medium and even when there was it was restless.

Strange places made her troubles worsen. It had taken months for her to get used to sleeping at Jen's but that could have been chalked down to why she was there and her age. Then came Hogwarts and she had taken longer still to settle in her dormroom, to feel at ease within it's walls. Random nights staying over at another house without being blackout drunk were never going to pass quickly for her.

She'd tried to sleep, she really had. Her yellow and black pyjama shorts and t-shirts were put on in good faith. Her hair she had braided into two plaits that fell over each shoulder to stop it getting tangled. The bed had been laid in, she'd gotten herself comfortable and... it was all for nothing. Hours after they'd all turned in Maz lay wide awake with not even a hint of sleep to come in her body.

Things to think about were popping into her mind with far less frequency and she could devote fewer slow minutes to them after running through her favourite topics. Finally she simply lay on her back and stared at the ceiling, her mind blank, her eyes open.

Whit if they start shaggin'... really loudly?

"Fuck off." The girl told herself quietly. That was the problem with a blank mind, or at least her blank mind. Unless she worked at it the blankness never lasted long.

Whit if they've nicknames that they shout it each other?

"Stop. Just stop it!" A whisper of a hiss greeted this thought. She wanted to sleep. Just let her sleep. Why couldn't she just bloody sleep?

They might even be quite vocal aboot whit they-

"Am up. Am fuckin' up." Maz swung her legs round and from the bed before the thought could even be finished. Sitting on the edge of the bed she put her head in her hands. Why did she have to think like that? But she knew why. It came from years of worrying about the same things at Jen's. Blame could be laid at Jen's feet for so much in her life.

Peering up from her hands Maz looked around the room. There was literally nothing for her to do. Her book she had finished, drinking so late and on her own seemed pathetic and she wasn't hungry. The room was hopeless to her, it may as well have been empty. She glanced over at the window on which she'd neglected to pull the drapes. The moon was half-full, just how she liked and quite inviting really.

Maz quickly slipped on the trainers she'd brought in her bag, grabbed her jacket from the chair it rested on and walked with gentle steps to the door. She pushed it open a fraction to peer out before pushing it further and sticking her head into the hallway. Left and right she looked while she listened for any noise. Finding all quiet she slipped out and closed the door softly behind her.

It wasn't her house she was in, it wasn't even a relations. She had no right to be sneaking around in the dark but argued with herself that it was fine since she intended on going directly outside. She wouldn't even look in any rooms on the way. Sticking close to the walls she crept along using what little light made it through the windows and soon she'd managed to find the front door which thankfully wasn't locked. She wondered about that but chalked it up to either luck or just wizards being wizards.

After slipping on her jacket Maz took a deep breath of the cool air. After the hot day they'd made it through the night was mild. Not too hot and not yet as sticky as the days could be. A perfect time for a walk really. Maz set off, walking far enough from the house that she wouldn't be heard if she got a fright from some rustling critter but close enough to always keep it in sight.

Starting off she was quite rigid, annoyed by her lack of sleeping like a normal person and wary of her surroundings but soon she'd relaxed. This was no different to walking anywhere else and she had her wand anyway. She had not a care in the world as she went on her way singing quietly to herself and sometimes dancing a little for a step or two. The song she was making up on the spot, a childish sounding melody about comedic creatures in gardens.

As much as it pained him, Maz wasn’t the only one that was having trouble sleeping. Even with a late night visit from Amber after the others had gone to sleep, Tim hadn’t been able to get his mind to shut the hell up and sleep eluded him completely. Once Amber had dozed off, he’d slipped out of bed, pulled on his jeans and looked around briefly for his t-shirt before giving it up as a lost cause. It wasn’t like anyone else was going to be up anyway; with a shrug he ducked out of the room and went downstairs for a drink. The elves would have been more than happy to supply something in his room, but he’d wanted to get up and move around anyway.

Tim finished his water and his eyes drifted toward the windows. Still wide awake, he decided that going back to bed would have been an exercise in futility so he slipped out through the door – leaving it unlocked behind him as he realized that he’d left his wand up on the bedside table. Not that it mattered; it wasn’t as though there were anything on the grounds more dangerous than the occasional bee. The wards were more than powerful enough to drive off anything truly dangerous.

After a quick stop through the kennels to visit with his grandfather’s dogs, Tim took a quick stroll through the gardens until he found a bench that looked deceptively comfortable. He stretched out on it and just stared up into the stars, something easy to do in the quiet, cool of the night, and let his mind wander. There were a lot of changes coming and Tim was pretty confident that the vast majority of them weren’t going to be good.

There wasn’t any real way for him to keep track of time, especially as zoned out as he had been, so he wasn’t sure how long it had been when an approaching noise caught his attention. As she came closer and he recognized Maz’s voice he sat up with a grin. Once she was close enough he didn’t need to shout he called out a teasing greeting, “And me without a camera…”

Maz started but as she looked around for the speaker she was smiling knowing it to be Tim. Spotting him on the bench her smile widened still. "An' me lookin' so drop dead gorgeous anaw." She struck a pose; an arm behind her head, the other on her waist and one leg slightly bent. "Feelin' a shoulda went wae the cowboy boots though." Adding this she looked down. "Woulda added that..." Bringing her hands to her front she pulled them into fists before popping her fingers out splayed "wow factor."

Laughing the girl jogged over to the bench her friend sat on and sat herself beside him. It was rare to see Tim or Amber without the other, rarer still since they got together and Maz was always happy to catch one of them on their own. Not that she didn't enjoy her time with them both together but there were, she felt slight differences when one wasn't with the other. The most obvious being the lack of their innuendos and the little looks she always caught, and quite liked to see.

While she leaned into the back of the bench trying to find a position close to comfortable Maz stretched her legs out and crossed them at the ankles. She looked up watching the stars flicker above. She loved the night and resented the fact that once a month it was taken from her. When she did get to be out after dark she always took a moment or two every now and again to just appreciate it.

Without taking her eyes from the stars she asked Tim, "So, how yi no kippin'? I hope yir no gaunae spew or any'hin' cause am no in the carin' kindae look efter yi mood."

It was late, or early, enough that there wasn’t any reason for Maz not to think she was alone outside. Still, it made Tim smile that he’d managed to startle her at least a bit. He laughed softly as she struck a pose then snorted back a laugh at her ridiculous hand gesture, and agreed, “Yes, a nice pair of boots would have completed the look nicely.”

As she flopped down next to him on the bench, Tim leaned back against the backrest and stretched his arms our along the rail. There were precious few people that he felt truly comfortable around and, aside from Richard, they were all in the Caer at the moment. Well, and Kiera – she seemed nice enough but Tim didn’t know her anywhere near well enough to form an opinion.

He smiled again as her gaze drifted up to the sky, just as his had done earlier and let his head drop back as well. There were very few things in nature that fascinated him as much as the night sky; and he truly believed that space travel was one of the very few things that muggles had over the magical world. There was a lot of space up there, and the magical world likely would have had much better luck with the resources to actually explore it.

“Busy day, lots of excitement,” he answered – also keeping his eyes on the sky.

“Not really the time or place to talk about it but I’m sure you’ll be able to read all about it in the paper tomorrow. There were a lot of reporters there and it’s not the sort of thing to just slip quietly by.”

Curiously he asked, “How about you?” then he grinned, “Bed too firm?”

Just Tim's tone was enough evidence that the excitement wasn't the good kind. "Usually, ah've found... nae fuckin' time's a good time. Time seems a mostly irrelevant bastard." She smiled slightly as she said it but she wouldn't push further. If Tim wanted to talk he would. "Commiserations anyway, mate."

With his arm stretched across the back of the bench she rested her head on it. "I 'hink Jen gits The Prohpet noo. She's want tae be informed... personally ah 'hink she likes it cause the crosswords easier." While her aunt was all levels of brilliant when it came to numbers she wasn't nearly so good with words. There were days when anyone entering the living room would have a clue shouted at them as Jen tried to complete the latest puzzle.

"Bed's grand." Maz answered. "Ah've jist no slept well fur a long time." She refused to start taking a sleeping draught fearing that her body would soon need it. That she would become addicted. Taking her eyes from the sky she turned her head to Tim. "Then ah started worryin' that the walls wur thin enough ah'd hear you an' Amber if yi goat doon eh it... an' that youse wid be weird fuckers way nicknames an' the T.M.I tawkin'." She was smiling, almost laughing.

"C'mon." Maz said suddenly after taking another moment looking up at the sky. She stood, clasping her hand round Tim's as she did. Smiling down at him she said, "Might as well walk an' try eh tire wurselves oot and ah might find that niffler ah saw earlier. Always wanted a pet niffler. Jen would freak the fuck oot!"

“You’re not wrong about that,” he agreed with a wry grin. The grin blossomed into a legitimate smile when she didn’t continue to push. It wasn’t like he’d really expected her to, but that didn’t make the gesture any less appreciated. Tim generally preferred to mull things over on his own and he loved that all of his friends seemed mostly okay with that.

With a nod he said, “Thanks.”

Tim looked over at her as her head fell back to rest against his arm and chuckled at what she said. Somehow, he just couldn’t see Jen spending too much time reading the paper and keeping up with current events. Apparently she’d proven to be a more acceptable Professor than he ever would have guessed, but that really hadn’t done much to increase his opinion of her. Maybe if the school were being run by able educators instead of grasping politicians as apparently was the case.

“Well,” he replied with a grin, “whatever makes her happy I suppose. I’d bet you could get her a book of crosswords somewhere… Maybe that would help to keep her out of your hair over the summer?”

For some reason, it struck him funny that she legitimately answered his question about the bed. He chuckled softly and answered, “Good – I’m glad to hear that. I’d hate to besmirch the Morrigan names by putting our guests into substandard beds.”

His chuckle turned into a full laugh at her next comment and he shook his head.

“Keep in mind that I’m not saying we don’t do those things, but I’d also point out that I’m really good at silencing charms. Short of being in the room,” here Tim winked playfully at her, “you wouldn’t hear anything that we didn’t want you to hear.”

As though he weren’t grateful enough for her company before, he smiled brightly as she took his hand and allowed her to pull him to his feet. While they started along the garden path, he said, “I’ve not seen any niffler’s around here in a while – Richard’s dogs seem to scare them off most of the time. If they’re back, we’ll have to see about scooping one up for you.”

"Course no. Am always right." Looking right at her friend she flashed a big toothy smile before looking up again. The dark sky was calming, though she did have a brief wish to be futher up the country as she gazed at it. Or maybe she'd be sleeping soundly further up... a doubtful notion.

"Naw! No that!" Maz sounded horrified at the idea as she whipped her head round to look at Tim. "She'd be firin' oot cryptic clues aw the time. She's awful at them. Nae idea why she keeps at it, seems a alogether useless past time tae me."

The girl grinned as he joked. "Couldnae huv any besmirchin' goin' on. Dinnae worry. Ah'll pit the word oot - the Morrigan's have the most comfortable ae beds. Spread it loud, spread it proud."

Maz laughed when Tim reassured her. It had just been a silly thought. Most thoughts that popped into a head at night were silly in her experience. It was nice and a bit hilarious that he went for reassuring, no matter how playfully. Maz herself would probably have chosen another direction completely. "Well that's gid tae know then. Yir a good guy 'hinkin' eh others an' that." She was mockingly sincere in her words.

Happy that he was up for accompanying her in the search Maz beamed and there was a slight bounce to her walk as she explained. "They never actually go far yi know... there urnae enough magical land fur them so they tend tay lay low, usually jist outside the dugs range." As they walked along Maz had led them towards the greenery where, her hand still clasping Tim she looked up trees and ducked to see under bushes. "Niffler's ur actually quite smart. There's studies whit state they kin learn routines. Maist creatures'll adapt if yi gie them long enough."

There was definitely one thing that could be said for Maz then - she was enthusiastic. Her search was certainly thourough but not going as she'd have liked. "You know..." she began speaking again after some moments of silence. "Mah Da then later Jen baith used tae say ah wiz a magnet fur any'hin' animal. I could go ootside tae play an' five minutes later huv some creature ur beasty way me. Never did tell thum it's cause ah go huntin'. No eh harm, jist tae see like."

Soon Maz let go Tim's hand and slowly walked towards a leafy bush, she ducked down to peer under and stayed perfectly still as she looked tried to see through the gloom. Lighting her wand wasn't an option, if anything was there light was sure to scare it off. No, she had a better plan. From her jacket pocket she took her purse from which she took a coin at a time. Crouch walking backwards she placed coins at intervals until she was beside Tim where she stood. "Sometimes it's a bit eh a waitin' game this huntin' lark."

There were times when Maz could be patient though those times were rarely evident with other people in her presence. So it wasn't much in evidence in her life, at least not for others to witness. With creatures it was different, she didn't have to work at it.

Tim hummed and then grinned over at her as she looked up at the sky, she seemed really distracted and he hoped that she wasn’t regretting staying the night.  He teased, “Right, sure you are.  It’s kind of impressive how I’ve managed to end up with my two closest friends being people who are always right…”

Despite himself, and the lateness of the hour, Tim couldn’t help but laugh that the shock and horror on his friend’s face.  It seemed completely out of place for the topic they were discussing, but that didn’t make it any less hilarious.

“I’ll have to remember that… I can send her books of crosswords whenever you feel compelled to point out how you’re always right and I’m always wrong,” he replied playfully.  His mind wondered what it would be like to have to put up with that when he was home from school and he just couldn’t picture Richard doing it.  Eventually, he decided that was something that he was just incredibly grateful for.

“Damn straight,” he teased back, “and don’t you forget it.”

Tim bumped her shoulder with his and completed his thought with a grin, “You say that now… but you have no way to know just what it is that we want you to hear…”

She seemed actually excited as she took his hand and led him on a walk through the garden.  The bounce in her step made him smile and he picked up his pace to make sure he kept up; listening as she spoke.  It made sense that their hunting grounds would shrink too as the muggles expanded too.  Even not knowing that the magical world existed the muggles managed to mess things up.  With a grin he nodded, “Oh, I’ve seen just how smart they can be.  Richard actually trained the dogs to sniff them out and keep them away, because there was a period of time that they were getting in and out of the Caer what felt like every day.”

“I remember that he was extremely put out about it as stuff kept going missing.  They even managed to get in through the wards somehow – he’s never figured out just how they did that.”

His grin widened, “It’s not like I was so young that I thought they were really cute and brought them in with me or anything like that.”

While he was vaguely aware of Maz’s history, it was kind of a rare thing to hear her talk about it.  Tim smiled, picturing her out at night poking around for some sort of animal to make friends with.  It was an endearing mental picture and he would have liked to have seen it.  Then he grinned; in fact, he bet it would have looked a lot like what he was seeing at the moment.

He released her hand as she knelt down at one of the bushes and pulled out the bait for an, hopefully, unsuspecting Niffler.  He watched as she laid a trail out for the creature and then asked, “I’m good for waiting.  Should we hide?  Or do you think the coins will be enough to get them over here?”

"One." Maz held up one finger without looking away from the stars. "Yi cannae huv two cause am always right." Really she could keep this up for hours, she had done with Jen. A few fun afternoons had been spent winding up her aunt simply by claiming to always be right.

"Never says yir always wrang... jist when yi dae a daft 'hing like disagree way me." She shrugged. "But yi send her a fuckin' crosswurd book an' ah'll be forced tae hurt yi... always wondered whit it's like tae pit someb'dys penis in a vice."

Turning fully to Tim now Maz was quick to respond. "Oh but ah dae know whit ah want tae hear... birdsong... tinkly bells... people in pain... no anycunt huvin' the relations." She frowned as she paused. "Unless wan eh the anycunts is me an' the others a good-lookin' bloke way a nice tan an' a big dong ah suppose." Yep, that was it, settled.

"Tell 'im eh leave a some'hin' shiny oot wance a month but act like he's hidden it. They'll take the offering. Generally they like tae actually avoid hooses... only go in if they're desperate." It was on one of her farms there had been trouble with nifflers when Maz suggested a sacrifice. Yes that's the word she used... she'd been reading some very questionable books for her age. It had worked, the offering. A fact that came as a surprise to all but the child.

Tim's grin had Maz grinning in return as she replied, "Then you had a deprived childhood my friend, very deprived."

When Tim asked if they should hide Maz seriously considered it before answering. "Nah, it knows wur here din it." Had she been in a more serious mood about the hunt then she probably would have hidden. This was just a bit of fun though. A way to pass the time and keep her friends mind off of whatever it was that was bothering him.

It didn't take very long for Maz to get bored. There had been no mental preperation for this time of waiting. No readying herself and no book to hand in her pocket. She sighed loudly and lay her head on Tim's shoulder. Her arms she crossed and tapped one finger on each elbow keeping a slow rythym. "Come on yah little shit." she muttered under her breath but that had never worked on a creature before and didn't work now. She sighed again.

Just as she was about to give up and tell Tim he may as well go bang himself to sleep, if Amber was willing the bush they were watching rustled. The lower leaves moving as a small nose poked it's way out. Maz straightened. She actually couldn't believe it had worked. Sure the coin trick had worked before at her home and later at Jen's but those nifflers had gotten used to her. They knew she meant them no harm and actually spoiled them with first her mother's and then Jen's jewellery.

The black head of the creature popped out fully as it sniffed the air and then saw the coins laid out. Maz laughed quietly finding it comical when the niffler looked from the coins to the friends and back a few times. "Come on." she cooed, her voice taking on soft, soothing tones. "Moan oot yah wee fucker. Git the shiny."

Clutching Tim's arm - with a slight adjustment in grip to not hurt him - Maz watched, bouncing just slightly on her feet as the niffler edged its way out. The first coin it quickly hid in it's fur and moved to the next and on until, at the last coin. Showing the intelligence Maz had spoken of and some cunning she'd not thought of the niffler snatched the final coin, turned tail and ran right back into the bush it had come from.

"Naw yi dinnae yah thievin' bastard!" Immediately letting go of Tim's arm Maz ran after the furry creature and dived to the ground, skidding along the grass on her belly. She came to a stop just at the bush and, since she was probably a mess already poked her head in. All the while she was laughing and when she spotted the niffler trying to hide she smiled. "Am still no gonnae hurt yi yah dafty."

Her response pulled another bark of laughter from Tim. This was an extremely entertaining, if circular argument to find himself in. With a playful grin he nodded, “I think I’ll just have to tell Amber that you said that and then I can sit back and watch as you two hash it out…”

“Maybe you could wrestle for it…” he teased, allowing a distant look to cross his face, as though he were imagining it, “there could even be mud…”

Tim snorted as she threatened him not to send a crossword book to Jen. Just as quickly, a distressed look crossed his face and he protested, “Hey! That’s hitting below the belt… literally!”

“No, no, I think you might have misunderstood what I was saying. This doesn’t have anything to do with what you want to hear; this has to do with what Amber and I want to expose you to. And as you’ve pointed out, there’s no way to determine just what sort of ‘exposing’ Amber and I are into.”

Magical creatures had never really fascinated Tim before, but it was fun listening to Maz talk about them. It was always fun to listen to people talk about something that they were passionate about and it seemed that applied to her in this case. It seemed counterintuitive to him that Nifflers would try to avoid houses since that was where most of the stuff was; but she clearly knew more about that than he did.

“That’s not the first time I’ve heard that,” he replied with a chuckle. He’d never really considered his childhood to have been deprived before, and he didn’t now. It was just full of different stuff.

It was true, they hadn’t been very quiet. Hiding at this point probably wouldn’t accomplish much, so he nodded and replied, “Right.”

Waiting had never been a hardship on Tim – at least not that he remembered. He had a decent imagination and was usually able to just let his mind wander when there wasn’t anything going on. This was no different. He’d just started to zone out when he felt Maz lay her head on his shoulder and, without thinking about it, he wrapped his arms around her while they watched for the critter.

Her language never failed to make him smile, though he contained his laughter so as to not make this endeavor completely pointless.

He didn’t know how much time had passed when the creature suddenly appeared in the bushes. Honestly, he’d given up all expectation that this was going to work and was just enjoying the time with his friend. An amused smile appeared on his face as the little creature slowly inched forward laying claim to the bait/coins. It slow, and cautious – so it caught him completely by surprise that it turned and bolted as it grabbed the last coin.

Apparently it had caught Maz off guard too as she bellowed at it and gave chase. Not having anything else to do, Tim joined in the hunt as well and followed after. As he dove under the bush, he skirted out and around it to try and see if it had kept going. After a few seconds he could hear her cooing to something so he circled back around the bush to the opposite side from where she seemed to be in case it ran again.

Maz laughed. "That wid be a quick hashin'. We only dinnae agree oan blood shit bit it's barely disagreein' when wan party isnae interested." It was an issue Maz came up against from time to time, the issue of what her argument actually was. The purists had theirs as did the muggle advocates. Was disinterest an actual argument? Maz thought not, not without the ability to have bulleted points that numbered above one.

"Noo see you picture that in yer pervy wee way totally forgettin' that ah take fightin' very seriously an' ah know some actual killer wrestlin' moves." Maz joked. "Speared a guy a couple year ago... done it a few times since. Fuckin' glorious." The memory at the forefront of her mind Maz grinned. I had been good, she should do it more.

The girl laughed again at Tim's reaction to what the consequence of sending Jen a crossword book would be. Boys were too easy, not much of a challenge for her really when all she had to do was threaten their valuables. Still, she had a lot of fun doing it.

A wicked grin curled her lips as Maz thought of a great possible revenge. "Well, if that's how we're playin' it. You two want me tae hear yer nastiness an' ah might jist want you two eh hear Jen's nastiness way the next boyfriend."

"Really we aw wur" Maz started in serious tones until she added. "Ah never did git that dragon ah wiz efter."

It took some coaxing and some more taking in soothing tones but soon the niffler was allowing Maz to pet him. She scratched the nape of his neck knowing they tended to like that without feeling intimidated by it. "Comin' then?" She asked softly as the creature relaxed and she knew she could lift him. Genlty with two hands she held him and tried to shuffle backwards. That's when she realised her mistake. There was a small slope to the ground, just enough to make sliding out impossible while holding onto her new friend.

"Um... Tim... could ye pull me oot, mate?" Maz asked, just a little embarrassed with a reddening appearing on her cheeks.

Well, she was right at that point. She and Amber were on the same page with most things – and they generally managed to avoid the disagreement that was blood status. That was something that Tim was incredibly glad for – the idea of two of his best friends having a real argument about something so fundamental as that scared the crap out of him.

A snort of laughter escaped him and he waved away her complaints about his wrestling ideas, “Hey you, leave me my fantasies! She fights pretty well too and I think that it would be pretty epic. Pervy, yes; but epic.”

“I’m so sorry I missed that,” he said as she told him that she’d speared a guy. The idea that someone had been stupid enough to piss her off enough to want to do that and then had stayed close by was amusing. But he absolutely wished that he could have seen it.

Tim pouted playfully at her as she laughed at his phantom pain. Not that he really expected it to change anything about her behavior, but it still seemed wrong. An almost sick look crossed his face as she mentioned tuning them in on Jen and her… friends… he couldn’t think about it in more detail than that or he’d throw up.

“I feel like I should call your bluff, that you wouldn’t want to risk getting close enough to record it. It’s not worth risking, though, so I’ll concede this one to you.”

It must have been the late hour, but for a second Tim had thought that Maz was being serious. Then came the comment about her dragon and he couldn’t contain his bark of laughter. With a shake of his head he replied, “That’s tragic – we’re almost adults now though; we’ll have to look into doing something about that.”

Again, he settled into a crouch and watched and listened as she interacted with the little creature under the tree. From the tone of her voice he assumed she’d won it over and he stood again before making his way back around the bush for when she crawled out. Or, at least that was the idea. He laughed again when she said she was stuck and mumbled loudly enough for her to hear, “I really do need to start carrying a camera,” before leaning down and gripping her feet before starting to tug her out from under the bush.

"Awright yah pervy bastard. Ah'll leave yi be." Maz didn't pass comment on his assertion that Amber could wrestle. If she let them get into a who was the better fighter back and forth she'd keep them there all night, and probably most of the morning too. Fighting was something she took pride in. If she was a factor in a fight then it naturally followed that she was the best fighter in it.

"Am sure ye'll git a chance tae see it wan day." She was definitley repeating the move on whoever pissed her off next. It was a good way to catch people off guard and take them down. Sure it hurt her shoulder a fair bit but she could deal with that.

She smiled at her friend. "Aye, it really isnae worth riskin'." It was something she probably would carry through on her word with.

"Ah goat over it. Ah'll go see some wan day an' be quite content." Maz told him. "Widnae mind a phoenix though. They're cool as fuck." Though to Maz most creatures were.

"Shut up you." Maz mumbled back, the pink on her cheeks continuing to darken. "An' you kin shut up anaw." She added, speaking to the niffler that stared at her. She was sure she caught a twinkle in the little fellas eye.

Tim started pulling her out and Maz helped as much as she could while only being able to use her legs. Soon she was free and quickly rolled to her back and sat up without the use of her arms. The niffler she still held. After spreading her legs out before her she sat the niffler on the ground between. "Well that certainly deserves a bit eh shiny." Maz smiled down at the creature as from her pocket she held out another coin. "Want tae give 'im it?" She asked Tim.

It was a pretty rare thing for Tim to actually win an argument with Maz; and so, over the years, he’d started counting it as a victory when he managed to get her to give up on one. That meant this was yet another mark in the win column. So long as he let it drop to, which he did with a content nod. As per usual, he was happy to take whatever wins he could get.

“I look forward to it,” he agreed with a pleased smile.

Somehow, it didn’t make him feel any better that she agreed with him. It left him with no question that she’d have followed through on her threat without a second thought – and that was more than just a little bit horrifying. Then the conversation was moving on and Tim couldn’t help but disagree again, “Phoenixes are pretty cool, but they’ve still got nothing on a dragon. It’s not like I can’t understand why people aren’t allowed to keep dragons, but it would still be really awesome to have one.”

Tim couldn’t see her blush in the dark, under the tree, and that was probably a good thing. It wasn’t the sort of thing that he’d ever be inclined to let go. Still, a soft chuckle escaped from him as he heard her grousing at the niffler as well just before he helped to drag the pair of them out from under the tree.

“I’d love to,” Tim agreed as he took a seat next to her on the ground so that he was near her and the niffler without making it seem like he was trapping the little critter in.

He took the offered coin and smiled as the creature’s eyes tracked it as he moved the gold up and laughed as he moved it back over the thing’s head and it toppled over onto its back as it refused to take its eyes off of the shiny. When he held it closer, the golden coin disappeared from between his fingers to appear in the niffler’s paws as though by magic.

"Bit difficult tae carry a dragon aboot oan yer arm though." Maz much preferred her little owl Colin who sat snugly on her shoulder. "Could train a dragon so ye could ride it ah guess."

A cool notion that was firmly placed in Maz's mind now. She'd have to research when she returned to school. Find out if there had ever been any dragon riders. Maybe she'd even take that visit to the islands over Christmas, ask them about the likelihood of such a plan working.

Maz chuckled as the niffler's eyes kept track of the coin. They really were funny little creatures and Maz had spent many hours in her life playing with them. "Wan eh these wid be cool as a pet anaw." She stated after the niffler took the coin and she scratched it behind it's small ears. "They're quite lovin' wen they git settled."

Smiling at the creature now she spoke to it. "No that ah kin keep you, eh? Bet ye've goat a niffler family eh be getting back to." The critter stared at Maz as she spoke as if it were taking in and understood what she was saying.

Another coin was taken from her pocket. "Watch this." she told Tim as she held the coin just above the niffler out of it's reach. She moved it then higher as the niffler watched until it sprang up with speed and snatched the coin from her hand. Delighted Maz laughed and applauded.

"Well done you." She still remembered well the first time she'd discovered these tubby little creatures could jump if the treasure was shiny enough. "Off ye pop then, afore ye bankrupt me." She smiled again while using her hand gently nudging the niffler on his way.

As he waddled off, the coins now hidden away Maz stood up and dusted herself off. There was a grass stain all along her front, even on her knees and mud too. She could feel the bits of leaves and sticks in her hair but that was a hazard she'd accepted long ago when she'd first taken an interest in animals. "Bet a look even mair stunnin' noo." She turned to Tim and struck another pose.

“That’s exactly what I was thinking, it would be difficult to carry one around on your arm,” he agreed before grinning mischievously, “but it would be a lot easier to ride around on its back. That would make it a lot easier to do whatever it is you want to do without anyone giving you any crap about it.”

Magical creatures had never really held an interest for Tim, though he did appreciate the strength of a dragon. The idea of being able to ride one like the knights in some of the stories that he’d read had been one that had hung with him for years; it just wasn’t something he’d ever felt he’d be in a situation to try and follow through on. His grades in Care of Magical creatures had been pretty close to abysmal.

“I can see how they could be a lot of fun, but I’d bet they could be a right pain the ass too,” Tim replied, looking at the adorable little creature speculatively.

Watching Maz play with the little critter was surprisingly soothing. It just seemed so normal and was wildly successful at taking his mind off of the thoughts that had been plaguing it. He laughed as the niffler launched itself into the air to claim the coin that Maz had been teasing it with. His grin returned as she actually applauded it. He shook his head as she shooed the creature away and then watched as she stood and tried to brush herself off.

“Oh, you do,” Tim agreed with a quick nod of his head before breaking out into laughter.

“I hope everyone else is still asleep – I can only imagine the questions if we come back in like this…”

"Sometimes ah like when they give me crap aboot it... means ah kin fight them." Though she would admit it would be nice on other occassions to just be left alone to get up to whatever it was she was getting up to. She'd never been seriously injured yet except that one time and the other time - she hadn't died. That was the point. Whatever daft notion in her head that she was following had never led her to her death. So what was people's problem?

Maz laughed. "Every single living 'hing oan the planet could be a right pain in the arse dependin' how ye look at it."

"Knew it." Maz nodded then laughed with Tim. She didn't know whether it was best to undo her braids or just leave them. Her hand even went to one before she decided against it. It was probably best to at least have a mirror.

The girl chuckled. "Be a funny experience at least." Telling them the truth would probably be funnier since she was certain none of the others would think they'd gone niffler hunting.

"So, yer ready eh go back then? Evenin' activities sufficiently took yer mind aff yer troubles?" Maz didn't wait for an answer. She knew when her job was done. Otherwise she'd be offering up some other idea of what they could do. Her arm looped around Tim's and they set off together back to the house.
