Maz stopped, her hand resting lightly on the doorknob with her head bent. It was early, earlier than the girl would like with the sun barely making it through the high arched windows of the corridor. The shadows around slowly receded as the rays crept in inch by inch. As much as the early start to her day was not to her liking it simply had to be so. Plans didn’t put themselves into action.

How unfortunate it was that her plan had to bring her here, to this door, with a person she preferred to avoid within. More unfortunate still was the fact she had to ask that person for help. Abhorrent enough was that notion of requiring anyone but to need her aunt, actually need her. The girl was revolted at the very thought.

Without another thought, before her growing sense of repulsion could drive her away Maz opened the door she’d magically unlocked. After a quick look around the deserted corridor she entered the room closing the door behind her. Darkness enveloped her and she stood still allowing her eyes time to adjust until finally she saw the bed and the sleeping form upon it.

Many a time in the past had this particular table been turned. The thought brought a smirk to the girl’s face as she moved on avoiding the chair and table sat in the middle of the small space. How would it feel she wondered to do what had been done so many times and place her hands around the sleeper’s neck? Would Jen wake, shocked from sleep by an unknown terror as she always had or would her aunt sleep on oblivious?

At the side of the bed she knelt with her head tilted as she looked into her aunt’s face. Of course the girl had seen the woman sleeping before but that had always been in a drunken slumber. Jen’s face that morning looked peaceful, the make-up washed and the redness of liquor gone from her cheeks. Maz could even see the similarities between Jen and her father, the little tells that they had actually been siblings. Similarities so often lost in the anger and disgust that marred her aunt’s features.

It was difficult to stop the thoughts of what if. What if her parents hadn’t died, would her fun, loving aunt Jen still exist? What if Jen hadn’t turned to hating her the moment she was needed most, would they be closer? Would they, could they have ever carried on with the relationship they had before? Was the love shared between a favourite (and only) aunt and her favourite (and only) niece always destined to crumble? They were all what if’s Maz couldn’t answer, for while she could ‘see’ into the future it was the one to come and not the could have beens.

Sighing loudly she pulled her mind back to the moment and what needed to be done. A gentle hand was placed not on Jen’s neck but her shoulder. Maz shook her aunt before sitting back and staring at her intently. The creepiness of the moment didn’t escape Maz and she fixed a could be deranged smile upon her own face.

Sleep hadn’t come easy for Jen the night before though she had been able to find no reason for the lack of it. Since Maz had gotten given the all clear and allowed out of the hospital wing Jen had felt her stresses lifted. Night after night she’d spent in the hospital beside the girl’s bed watching as she experienced what the woman could only assume was every side-effect in the book. It had taken it’s toll and Jen had needed many a full night’s sleep to rid the bags beneath and tiredness within her eyes.

After hours of listening to the ticking of her internal clock Jen had finally felt the nothingness of sleep taking her. Her eyes had drooped bit by bit until finally her day was done. Dreams did not infect her sleep as what was left of the night passed peacefully.

That was until she heard a breath in the air, no a sigh, definitely a sigh. Without opening her eyes Jen came awake, a habit she had learned for judging the severity of hangovers. She could sense another there, just beside the bed watching her. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and the ones on her arm were quick to join. Quiet breathing reached her ears as the professor lay still beneath the covers. Knowing she locked the door Jen could only assume something magical or dead was there with her. She had no hopes of fighting either, a squib in the magical world was basically defenseless.

Then the shaking came bringing a small noise to her throat as her eyes snapped wide. At first glance she could see nothing thanks to the heavy curtain drawn across the window. Her eyes quickly adjusted to the gloom and she saw her. The look on her niece’s face brought fear to Jen’s heart even as said organ seemed to lodge itself in her throat. It was another side-effect, Maz had gone feral worse than she’d ever gotten in the hospital wing. It had to be that but the treatment had stopped, the side-effects should be gone.

“M-mmaz… you… are you okay?” Even on her worst days, the days she’d gone cold turkey from the drink Jen’s voice had never shaken so much.

Maz knew Jen was awake before she shook her. She’d long since known her aunt could wake without her eyes immediately opening. It had led to the girl being caught doing something she shouldn’t more than once. The almost squeaking noise that came from her aunt led to the widening of Maz’s grin. It was good that Jen was scared. There was no harm ever in giving a person a taste of their own medicine. It could be worse after all, Maz could really mean her aunt harm.

The shaking voice and wide eyes left Maz with a feeling of satisfaction. Jen was scared of her, as she should be and hopefully now that Maz was so close to coming of age her aunt would remember this fear. Done were the days of Maz quietly taking Jen’s shit. The upper hand was going to be taken across the board in her own life.

She did always have to have her fun though. Rarely passed up the opportunity in fact. So, leaning on her toes she stretched the grin as far as it would go, held it for a heartbeat before allowing a growl to build in the depths of her throat. Seconds passed before she could keep a straight face no more and laughing she rocked back on her heels.

“Yir too easy, Jen. Surprised yi didnae piss the bed.” She sniffed to make sure before turning away still chuckling to herself. Maz stood quickly shrugged off her backpack and slid it across the floor where it was stopped by the chair. The chair was just a couple of steps away and when the girl sat on it she sank slightly into the well-used cushion. “Ur yi gittin’ up then? Dae yi feel like jist starin’ it me way that glakkit expression oan yer puss aw day long?” The girl enquired of her aunt with a cocked brow as she looked over. Without taking her eyes from her aunt she removed her wand from her boot then with a simple wave the heavy curtains swished open.

A second before the first crack poured light into the room Maz looked away. Casting her glance to the floor she missed the worst of the sudden light. “This place is fuckin’ shit!” She remarked after a quick look around the room. It really was not living up to her expectations. Not even close.

That grin, that horrible grin. A grin that was better placed in one of the asylums in old muggle horror films. Jen shrank back from it and shrank again from the growl. A wolf like growl. It was just her luck that Maz would come for her under the influence of whatever side-effect she was suffering from. Had she been in the girl’s position she’d have done the very same. The times between them hadn’t been the best and Jen knew that when it came to Maz she was owed a hell of a lot of pain.

Then the girl was laughing and the woman frowned but dared not move closer. This could be a trick. The trace of that animalistic curse in her niece could be intelligent. The worst kind of monster because it was smart and knew how to think. Any moment now she expected the girl to pounce and she guessed it would probably be the end of her. Who would get there in time to stop a poor, defenceless squib from the wand of a deranged witch?

The spoken words though they entered her ears took a longer time than usual to transmit to her brain. There was a moment or two where Jen lay eyes still wide with her mouth gaping. Just what was happening here? When she realised just what it was the woman scowled. Her heart couldn’t take this kind of stress, it wasn’t up to the task. It had been put through almost as much as her liver already.

“You… you’re fucking with me?” she asked incredulously. “You’re just messing around? You’re really okay?” Her niece nodded and though Jen felt anger towards the girl she also felt immense relief. Maz was alright, she was fine. Gasping in each breath after her scare Jen waited as she felt her heart leave it’s new residence in the middle of her throat and retreat to it’s original place. “Sometimes you’re a right fucking bitch, you know that, right?” Again her niece nodded and Jen contented herself with a sigh.

“I’m getting up. I’m getting up.” The professor answered shortly. She swung her legs out of the bed, scowled at her niece before standing up and then falling straight back down onto the bed again. “This is your fault!” she scolded the girl knowing it was the fear to blame for her unsteady limbs.

“Yes. Thank you.” Ten minutes couldn’t even have been spent in the girl’s company and already the aunt was tired. A hazard of being the girl’s guardian. She was tiring, she was hard work and Jen knew she had to take a lot of the blame for that. When her legs were feeling more co-operative Jen walked to the second door in the room and passing through was in a small toilet with shower. While waiting for the tap water to warm she asked of her niece. “So, why are you here being a pain in my arse this early in the morning?” Lukewarm water was quickly splashed over her face and neck to wake her up and hopefully chase the rest of the fear away.

As she nodded in answer to Jen’s question Maz laughed again. It had been a good one. Her aunt had looked positively terrified. She’d even gone paler than Maz. She sat back waiting for her aunt to come round then burst out laughing once more when Jen fell back down. It had turned out to not be too bad of an early start to the day. This opportunity to mess with Jen’s head wouldn’t occur at any other time of the day.

It felt good to vent in some way. There were still years of misdeeds stored in Maz’s mind and the bad feeling about each and every one of them too. This woman, the one adult left who was supposed to love her had put her through the mill. Hurt, physical pain, embarrassment, loneliness, isolation… the list of emotions went on and on. Maz had felt them all, thanks to her dear aunt.

To resist the urge of kicking Jen while she walked past Maz slipped her trainers off and brought her legs up to curl beneath her. “An’ ah ‘hink you’re great anaw, Auntie Jen.” she called through to her aunt while she bent to pull an envelope from her bag. It felt heavier than before that slim package in her hand. Almost like some lead had been put in without her knowing. She lifted the flap to peek in and make sure all was as it should be. Finding it was the flap was closed again before she clutched the package to her chest.

“Ah kindae need yir help way some’hin’.” The words took a long time coming and even then had to be forced out, reluctant as they were to be spoken. Pestering Jen into getting her a free day in Hogsmeade had been different to this. There had been no feeling of disgust and the need was actually a want. But while she could have gone without the trip to the village before the next school visit Maz did need this assistance from her aunt. There was no other way of doing this, no one else she could turn to. Maz hated that!

While awaiting the girl’s answer Jen finished waking herself up and towelled her face dry. Her rude awakening was not a welcome one especially after she’d struggled for what sleep she’d managed the night before. Why couldn’t Maz wait until after breakfast? Of course she knew why because she was Maz and if she wasn’t being a pain in someone’s rear her day was ruined. Or it was plausible that it was just Jen she wanted to annoy.

It was while she was brushing her teeth that Maz answered her question. Jen stopped with the brush still in her mouth. The disgust in her niece’s tone did not pass Jen by. A hint of a smile ghosted her lips for it was not often Maz so freely gave her the upper hand. The girl was too good at handling things on her own, of requiring very little help from anyone but the least was required from her aunt. From a young age Maz had sought independence and over the years it had suited Jen some of the time while pissing her off at others.

After finishing off quickly Jen turned back to the room. Leaning in the doorway she regarded the girl as she curled in the chair. The envelope brought a frown to her face. Of all the help that could be needed of her she couldn’t think of any that involved an envelope. A stick to pee on definitely but not an envelope.

“So, what do you need my help with?” Jen asked after a silent stare passed between the two. She had noticed the look of determination on the girl’s face, a look she also knew often spelled trouble. “And why couldn’t it have waited until after I’ve eaten?”

She moved to the corner of the room and a wardrobe there. It had always been a habit of Jen’s to hide away provisions, a trait she’d picked up from her brother. They’d shared many stashes around their childhood home together. It was a handy habit to have, it was certainly handy then. From a the cupboard she pulled a bag which she took with her when she sat on the bed. After throwing a chocolate bar and packet of crisps into Maz’s lap Jen dug in for her own goodies.

“Ah need yi eh go a couple eh messages fur me then meet Parker.” Maz answered feeling there was no point beating about the bush. “An’ ah hid tae git yi early cause ah’ve goat other ‘hings ah need tae be dain way mah life.

Maz left the crisps and chocolate for the moment. “I need yi tae git these amounts oot the accounts.” A piece of parchment was handed to Jen. “Then meet Parker it yours. Easy as pie. Yi kin even take enough fur a bottle if yi want.” Not that Maz was feeling generous of course, she simply was not above bribery to get things done. Enough time had been wasted already while she tried and failed to discover the names of her attackers.

After magically sealing the envelope she’d filled Maz held it up one-handed. “Gee the readies an’ this tae Parker. Dinnae try eh open it. Ah’ll know if yi dae when yi come back way an epic case eh the shits.” The girl was bluffing but as a squib Jen had no way to know that and Maz had long perfected her poker face.

The crinkle of paper sounded as Maz opened the chocolate bar. “Gaunae dae it then?” she asked of her aunt before biting off a large chunk of her treat.

The initial request shocked Jen into silence. Maz was dealing with Parker! Maz was paying Parker! Oh this could not be anything good. People didn’t pay Clyde Parker to do good things. Even before she could begin to wonder what Maz could want with Parker’s services she first had to consider the how of it. Just how had her niece been able to enlist his services?

It had been a long time since Jen had first met Parker at a friend of a friends house party. Not that she’d actually met him then. No she’d seen him, shuddered and proceeded to ignore his intimidating presence all night. The first party had ended prematurely when a fight broke out and since she considered her night unfinished Jen had announced the party would continue at hers. Much cheers and applause had sounded and continued to sound the whole trip on The Knight Bus. There was no way Jen could have known who was coming along to her house and by that time in the night she’d put the silent man from her mind.

Much later she’d needed some air though not the fresh kind since as soon as she’d stepped outside she had lit up. After a couple of draws the woman had felt a presence there with her in the dark back garden. Turning she’d spied Clyde in the shadows silently watching her as he himself smoked. It had been the immense feeling of awkwardness that had pushed Jen to talk and talk while getting very little in return. Again it had been that feeling that had prompted her to tell the man he was welcome anytime after her own cigarette was finished.

Weeks later with the encounter barely remaining as a memory Jen had been woken in the middle of the night by three loud thumps upon her front door. She’d rushed to it and peeking through the spyhole spotted Parker. The door would have been ignored without hesitation if not for the way the man held himself and the blood she could see running down his face. She had been too terrified to leave the man on the step. How would he repay her for that misdeed? So the door had been opened and Clyde stepped through.

Though she could never answer why or how it had happened Jen and the man had become something like friends. He would pop in every now and again to lay low and Jen found herself glad of the company (as silent as it was at times) and the payments had always been appreciated. Of course it being Parker the payments were never monetary but rather cases of alcohol, jewellery she could keep or hauk or whatever he’d happened to lay his hands on in his absence from her life.

With Maz’s instructions over Jen found her voice again. “Clyde? As in Clyde Parker? Maz whatever could you need with him?” A gasp filled the room as Jen put two and two together and making four. Four being Maz’s attack added to her promise of revenge. She paled considerably and when she spoke barely more than a whisper managed to pass his lips. “You can’t! Maz he hurts people!”

Of all the bad ways Jen had thought her niece would seek revenge this had not been one of them. If she wanted whoever was responsible beaten why didn’t she just do it herself? Maz wasn’t the type to shy away, especially when it came to violence. Especially when the odds were against her. In fact she seemed to thrive on the odds being against her.

“You can’t do this.” Though still speaking in whispers Jen’s tone held a sense of authority and sternness to it. “You can’t. I won’t. Do you want me to lose my job?” That sentence brought even the woman speaking it up short. It had escaped her notice just how much she had come to like life at Hogwarts but that question made it blatantly obvious. Jen had come to love her job. She would not risk it, she could not risk it. “It’s not right of you to involve me in this. I’m a teacher! I’ve got a reputation to build…” she couldn’t stop herself from talking, couldn’t help but ramble on until the point where she was almost incoherent.

At first Maz was amused by her aunt’s reaction. It was funny to watch her begin to lose her shit and so needlessly too. There had been no talk of violent action between herself and Parker, violence wasn’t what she needed him for. Had she felt that like-for-like revenge had been enough Maz would have no help.

Her mood quickly changed when her aunt denied her request. A scowl pulled her brows as her eyes narrowed. There was no other way, no other person she could involve. Fuck Jen and fuck her job.

Watching as Jen rambled on barely remembering to suck in air between words Maz saw what was coming. Her aunt was working herself up and when Jen worked herself up in such a manner it went on and on until her voice became something akin to nails on a chalkboard or a cat’s choir.

“Jen.” she tried to interrupt but it was no good. On her aunt rambled. “Aunte Jen!” The word was a shout now but still her aunt paid her no mind. There was nothing else for it then. Maz stood from the chair, stepped over to the bed and after just a moment of hesitation where she considered a punch Maz slapped Jen hard across the face. “Wull you calm the fuck doon wummin!” The girl snarled as she brought her face close to the woman’s. “An’ you wull go an’ see Parker. You better!. You. Owe. Me.”

Leaving her aunt to her second bout of shock Maz resumed her seat in the chair after retrieving her snack. “An’ he’s no gaunae hurt anyc**t. Hurtin’ fowk isnae aw he does. Turns his haun eh any’hin’ as long as there’s readies tae be made.” She sighed as she had to explain, explaining was wasting time. “An’ ah thought aboot yir job. That’s why yir meetin’ Parker at your bit an’ it’s why ah’ll no be tellin’ yi whit he’s dain fur me.”

Rightly assuming that her aunt had properly connected the dots Maz fixed her with a hard stare. “Ah know who jumped me. Ah know their names. Dae yi want thum tae git away way it? Want fowk tae ‘hink they kin push me aroon an’ nuhin’ll come eh it? Dae yi ‘hink am some kind eh fuckin’ mug?” The girl leaned closer towards her aunt who hadn’t moved from the bed. “Dae yi ‘hink ah deserved it Jen? Is that it?”

After leaving a break that her aunt failed to fill Maz spoke on. “Did ah deserve tae almost die, Jen? Did ah deserve tae be kicked an’ stamped oan so hard ribs broke? Whit aboot the concussion; that deserved wiz it? The lost teeth? The blackened eyes? Cracked skull? How aboot the months in that fuckin’ hospital wing feelin’ like a wiz becomin’... as if ah wiz... ” Maz stopped, she couldn’t finish that thought. Couldn’t think like that ever again. Living it had been bad enough without revisiting it. “Did ah really deserve aw that Jen?” There was a new softness to her tone and eyes as she finished and sat back, a hint of defeat. She tried to keep it hidden, cover it with a new scowl but Maz was hurt that her own aunt might be thinking that way.

Finding herself struck dumb by the hard slap Jen had no choice but to listen as Maz spoke while she rubbed her reddening cheek. At the snarling Jen inwardly shrunk back. As the girl had grown and fought her back Jen had become scared of her. She was a force to be reckoned with when she got going and while Jen still sniped at the girl she knew when not to push her luck. Especially after her episodes in the hospital wing. Plus it was true enough that in a way she did owe Maz. Jen knew what she’d put the girl through and worse she had always known how wrong it was.

It was true enough what she was saying about Clyde. He would do anything as long as he could earn from it. Jen had long known he was driven purely by gold. The question of what he could possibly be doing for Maz still remained unanswered though and as the girl continued to speak Jen knew she’d know only when Maz deemed it necessary. As much as she really would rather not Jen was considering going against Maz and telling her no again. Let the girl do what she would. Let her use her wand even. It was an altogether strange notion to be ready to fight for her job.

Then came the questions and Jen recoiled as if slapped a second time. It was true enough that before Maz’s fear filled eyes had found her Jen would have been thinking exactly as the girl claimed. But it hurt then for the worst to be assumed when the worst had never once crossed her mind. No Maz did not deserve what had been done to her. She did not deserve to suffer as she had. As much as she was a pain in the arse and a tad to quick with her fists Jen knew her niece to be a decent person. Actually, no, Jen believed her to be better than decent no matter what she might tell others.

The hurt couldn’t be hidden from her as Maz’s voice trailed away. Jen knew exactly what fears had run through the girl’s mind after the worst nights in the hospital wing. She knew because they had run through hers too. That had been done to her. That horror from the darkest recesses of her own mind had been visited upon the girl by the hands… and feet of others.

As the silence lingered between the two, as they didn’t drop their gaze from one another Jen saw again the fear those dark eyes had held. Again she heard the sickening, too loud to be real thud as her niece had hit the floor. She relived it, every second of it. Most of all he relived the moment she had honestly thought Maz was gone from the world. Her eyes glistened but no tears fell.

“You deserved none of it, Maz. I’ve never thought you did.” She was surprised at the amount of anger in her tone. Anger at whoever had hurt her niece. A building rage at the one’s responsible for making her look the way she had in that hall and sound as she did then in that room. Still, her job…

“Can’t you just tell the Headmaster? Or the Aurors? They’ve been trying to discover who was behind the attack ever since it happened. We’ve had meetings. We’ve been told to keep our ears open and our eyes peeled. Just tell someone, Maz, let the authorities deal with it… please.”

Maz didn’t break the silence. She waited for her aunt to speak while wondering what could be going on in the woman’s head. Was she trying to work a way out of it? Or was she just now justifying the attack that had lead to Maz being there? The girl had no way of knowing and she hated it.

Finally Jen spoke and Maz laughed without humour. Sometimes her aunt was the most ridiculous person. “Why the fuck should ah? Wiz Norwood left bloodied oan the flair? Any eh the Aurors? This iznae their fight… it’s fuckin’ mine an’, Jen.” Maz grinned. “You ae aw people should know ah dinnae share whit’s mine aw that well.”

Sitting back in the chair Maz watched her aunt, stared so hard it was as though she was looking through her. Her eyes suddenly came back into focus. “Why the fuck dae you hate me so much?” Jen opened her mouth but Maz didn’t allow her time to speak. “Naw ah mean seriously. Why dae you actually hate me? Whit the fuck did ah dae?”

Both were questions long since held but never asked. Maz had never actually had any intention of asking them in her aunt’s lifetime. She only asked out of anger but with the questions out she wanted the answers.

Her niece’s response was about what Jen expected but she had to try, didn’t she? Though as she continued to go over Maz’s questions of deserving it, kept thinking of her time under the nurse’s care the rage in Jen was outgrowing all else. Was her job really more important than Maz showing the world that you don’t fuck with her and in turn you don’t fuck with the Cowan’s? Was it more important that those absolute bastard getting what was coming to them?

While Maz certainly hadn’t deserved what had happened the one’s who hurt her deserved whatever Maz would throw at them. The girl didn’t deserve her beating but she sure deserved her revenge.

Another shock was in store for her when Maz blurted out the question Jen had always felt was a long time coming. Her mouth opened but no words formed, her mind a complete blank. Not that she was given the chance to speak even if she could kick her brain back into gear. Maz didn’t wait.

It was too much to get into and not enough to justify most of what had transpired between the pair. The grief, the stupid reasoning behind her equally stupid choices, the alcohol abuse to stop her thinking of what she was doing to the girl. It was all too much and not something she could put into words there and then. “I don’t. I never have.” Though she spoke quietly she was being truthful. Regardless of how she’d acted deep down Jen had never hated her niece, and she’d always regretted mistreating her… until she drank the regret deeper down that is. “Nothing. You did nothing.”

Silence fell between the two again. Jen knew what she was going to say. Knew what she was going to do. Still she put it off to think it over once more. Not that thinking it over would change anything. “Fine.” she said it with a loud sigh. “I’ll help you. Whatever you want.” She probably shouldn’t have said that, there was a chance Maz would take her at her exact word.

A quiet scoff was the only response to her aunt’s denials. If she wasn’t hating then why was Jen such an awful cow? Her issues with the booze could only account for so much. Neglect would have been one thing but with Jen it had gone so much further than neglect.

At her aunt’s acceptance Maz smiled, though it wasn’t an altogether pleasant one. “Thank you.” she said sincerely. No matter how certain she was that she would get Jen to do as she wanted there had always been the chance she’d dig in her heels. It would have thrown quite a massive spanner into the works that were Maz’s plans.

She moved to sit beside her aunt on the bed and handed her the envelope. “Mind yi cannae open that, right? Yir shitty joab’s it stake if yi know mair than’s good fur yi.”

Spotting the piece of parchment she’d given her aunt earlier Maz picked it from the covers and gave it to Jen. “Git the dosh. Go see Parker. Easy. Then yir time’s yir ain. An’ oan top eh the offered bottle yi kin huv a wee treat day… dinnae git pished though - there’s yir joab tae consider.” It was always easy for Maz to turn her hand back to sarcasm so she did it then. Though for once she wasn’t trying to get a rise out of her aunt by doing it.

Her task of the morning completed Maz no longer had to endure her aunt’s company. Nor did she much care for it after her blurted questions earlier. She was supposed to not care so she shouldn’t ask. After standing quickly Maz picked her bag from the floor and walked towards the door. Stopping with it ajar she turned back, looked round the room then settled her gaze on her aunt. “Yi really dae need tae see aboot better digs.” Then she left, closing the door gently behind her before going on her way to the rest of her day feeling a lot better about things than she had in a long time.

Had she folded too quickly? Should she have held out longer? It wouldn’t have changed a thing, just have wasted time. Still, maybe she should have fought a little longer. Perhaps it wasn’t best to indulge her niece in this. Was going to Norwood an option?

Jen laughed out loud at the very thought. Maz would make her pay for that. A very painful payment, especially with them being in the castle and not in the muggle world. Even at that the protection of the muggle world would end the day Maz turned seventeen and then Jen would pay. No, going to Norwood was not an option. Nor was going to the Aurors. The only option was to go to Parker.

Even if she did think of putting herself up against Maz and her magic she did owe the girl. Not just for what she’d done to the girl either. They may never speak of them but Jen remembered the mornings of waking in her bed to find herself clean, hair plaited and pyjamas on even though the taste in her mouth was telling her she’d been sick to look over and find Maz asleep in the corner. Then there were the bad choice of boyfriends Maz had defended her against, the most recent being that idiot Maz had hit over the head with a vase. There was a lot more and Jen knew it.

That was even before considering the family element of the situation and what Jake would want her to do. Jen assumed that knowing where he’d ended up after trusting the authorities he’d most likely put a lot more faith in his daughter. Though she would probably have grown up to be a very different person had she grown up with him.

She got to her feet with a sigh, her snacking forgotten for the moment. She better get a move on. The quicker she started the quicker she was finished was the quicker she could go about forgetting the whole day. Maybe she would have that bottle after all. Her control had gotten better and she might find herself needing it.
