In a quiet corner of the empty corridor Maz sat staring at the blank wall with her back against another. For days now she'd been free of that damn hospital bed and, after a well deserved day of having a laugh she'd spent all her free time on finding out who her attackers were. It rankled on a base level that she couldn't do it, no matter what she tried. She was a seer for Merlin's sake! This should be easy, the names should be in her head and her plans being put into place.

Not only was her gift of sight failing her but no one was talking. Granted, Maz didn't know where to start with questioning people but still, there wasn't even anything to overhear. Her sneakiness was going unneeded and there was no glaringly obvious person to hurt for information.

It couldn't continue! She had to think of something. Time she felt was running out and she still needed to make her plans before setting them into motion. Maybe that would take days, perhaps week or even months. Maz had no way of guessing without knowing who she should focus her plots on.

For what felt like the millionth time in days Maz started listing her suspects in her head. Most of Gryffindor house was included, some of Ravenclaw, a small amount of Slytherin's and a few Hufflepuff's. She'd taken time over eliminating names based on cowardliness and all around wimpery but still the list was a lot longer than she would have liked.

Maz needed a break. Not a rest but a bit of good luck. Something to put her on the right track. It only had to be a little nudge in the right direction. Maz was a Hufflepuff, they were unfazed at the prospect of hard work.

It had been a couple of days and Aiden had actually been losing some sleep over what to do next. Well, that wasn’t true, he knew what he needed to do next but he wasn’t sure that he could actually bring himself to do it. When he’d heard the jackasses bragging, he’d been tempted to storm off and turn them in right away, but he really didn’t want to be known as the tattle-tale that reported on them or they’d turn on him too and nothing really good would be accomplished either.

Then he’d been waiting too long to tell any of the Professors without it seeming like he’d been hiding something and then he decided on what he was going to do. The trick was finding the person he wanted to talk to – they didn’t run in the same circles, they weren’t in the same year, and they didn’t share a House. All of these things combined to ramp up his frustration but didn’t do anything to reduce his desire to find Maz.

Finally, someone had managed to point him toward an old, out of use hallway. Honestly, he’d expected to be ambushed or mugged or something. He was actually pretty surprised when he came around a corner and spotted the person he was looking for further ahead.

Aiden cleared his throat as he approached, to get her attention, and greeted, “Hello. I’m sorry to interrupt – how are you feeling?”

As Maz sat staring at the wall she came to the decision that all walls really should have a small storage space with a ball. There was nothing better she felt for helping when a person really needed to think. It would be great then to sit and violently toss the ball against the wall before her and catch it swiftly on the return. She could even hear the small thud as the tennis ball she was imagining bounced off the stone.

Over the imagined bangs in her head Maz heard footsteps approach the corner she'd chosen to squirrel herself away in. It was a good spot but as she had well known not the most private. That day she wasn't against company even while she didn't trouble herself to search it out. Her position didn't change as the person approached with her sitting in a mid slouch while one legged was stretched out and the other beneath it.

She felt it heartening to find she hadn't become nervous because of the attack. Of course she was wary as she always would have been. But not nervous. There was still enough confidence in her own ability to think on her feet and quickly that she had no urge to jump into a defensive stance. It had been a near thing she knew with her first days out of the hospital wing finding her paranoid about noises behind her.

Glad that was long over she waited and soon enough when she turned her head to look a boy was standing close to her. She stared at his face giving herself a short time to allow recognition to set in. It didn't.

"Eh... cool ah suppose." Why ask how she was? It wasn't as if she would turn around and spill to a stranger. She also had to wonder what he thought he was interrupting. She was literally sitting at the bottom of a wall staring at nothing while doing nothing. "Why ur yi interruptin' if yir sorry fur it?" She asked still watching him closely. The girl wasn't paranoid but she was alert.

Her response to his question didn’t surprise him - though his reaction to it did. It wasn’t like he’d really expected her to give him any sort of meaningful answer or to really bare her soul to him about anything important. Stupidly, though, he still felt a little slighted that she blew him off as easily as she had. Then she spoke up again and his attention was pulled back.

“I’m glad,” he replied before hurrying on.

“I… uh… I wanted to talk to you about what happened.”

It felt weird to know that he was going to be ratting out some of the kids in his House, but what they’d done hadn’t been acceptable and there wasn’t really anything else he could do. With a shake of his head he pushed on, “I overheard a couple of students talking about your attack. From what I’ve heard, they were the ones that actually did it.”

When he’d finished speaking he fidgeted slightly and slipped his hands into his pockets as he waited to see just how she’d respond to his revelation. Ideally it wouldn’t be an attack on him for what he’d learned - too many people were too apt to attack the messenger as far as he was concerned.

Maz was surprised when he said he wanted to speak about the attack. Most people didn't, at least not within her earshot. As well as causing her great difficulty in finding out the names she wanted it was also irritating her no end. People were tiptoeing around her and the subject and Maz was not best pleased with that. She wasn't about to shy away from it so why should anyone else?

She turned to him sitting herself against a different wall so she could face the boy. With one brow cocked she looked him over again. Not knowing who he was put her at a disadvantage - there was no way for her to know if he was messing with her.

"Whit's yir name?" She asked instead of going straight for the information she was so desperate to have. Maybe his name would spark some recognition. She really did have to work on not completely dismissing people. Before she'd always thought it was fine and she didn't have to remember every face she saw but now she knew that she did. Not only that but she had to start committing every voice to memory too. If she'd done that before she might not even need any help.

"An' if yi've overheard that why wid yi want tae tell me any'hin' aboot it?" There was nothing about the girl that was standoffish or even dismissive. She was questioning out of genuine curiosity. If she didn't know him then he didn't know her and while she had helped strangers in the past she knew this boy wasn't compelled to in the same way she was. And she was wary of accepting anyone she didn't know as a genuine good person. There were too few of them about to accept without explanation.

As she turned to face him and settled into her new seat, he leaned up against the wall and got comfortable. He was close enough that they could speak quietly without being easily overheard, but far enough away that he hoped she wouldn’t think he was invading her space or anything like that. As she looked him over a second time, he couldn’t help but grin and wait for the inevitable question.

When it came he smiled softly and said, “My name is Aiden Flynn.”

At one point his name might have been more recognizable. However, it had been a while since he’d had any confrontations with Pavon or any of the professors; and with everything that was going on in the school, he found that a lot of the students had very short memories. There was just too much else to keep them entertained. “I wish I had a more altruistic reason for coming to you – but I’m talking to you because I want to make sure someone knows about this but I don’t want to get all caught up in it. The people who were bragging about this have enough friends that they could make my life pretty difficult.”

“From what I’ve seen of you and heard about you, you don’t seem like the sort of person that would throw me in it for trying to help.”

"Hello then, Aiden Flynn." She noted his grin though. If he wasn't a person to get bent out of shape when being looked over maybe he wasn't one to do so for other silly reasons. Maz needed to make note of people like that. With tensions in the castle more and more people were becoming easily offended by actions and even words. She was beginning to see she needed to know who the offended people were, to avoid at all costs.

A scowl crossed her face when he said they were bragging. She had expected it but knowing they were doing it made her lack of progress harder to take. She should have heard something before, she should already have the names.

"Ah'll no tell anybody yi telt me." Her words were sincere. Maz wouldn't tell. There would be no need to. The upper hand was going to become and firmly remain hers.

Not that Aiden would have to worry even if it did get out he'd told. The minute he spoke the names he would become someone Maz owed. She would owe it to him to ensure he received none of the fallout from whatever form her revenge might take. It was good that he'd found her in such a quiet place for the only people in the know would be those two.

"So..." she started but paused for a beat or two. There was of course the question of belief but, she supposed she'd see how the ground lay after he'd spoke his piece. After a shrug she continued, "Whit did yi hear an' fae who?" It seemed slightly rude to her that she was taking the lead but she just decided that since someone had to it was better the someone was her.

“Hello to you too,” he replied with a nod.

The scowl that blossomed on her face had been expected really. He’d have been pissed if it had been him that someone had been bragging about putting down. Well, he had been pissed when it had been Pavon – fortunately though, he’d tended to come out at least even, if not on top, for those encounters. Those encounters were still pretty funny to him; largely because of Sannesley’s inability to pick fights where he wasn’t apt to get caught.

Aiden believed her when she said that she wouldn’t spread the word that he’d told her. Even if he thought there was a chance she was going to spread this to everyone, he probably would have taken the chance. The assholes had crossed a line and their actions had actually started to damage the cause the Headmaster was pushing for – they needed to be dealt with somehow and Maz seemed keen to make that happen. The fact that she’d been the victim just made it even easier in his mind to let the punishments up to her.

“Fair enough,” he agreed, from everything that he’d heard about Maz – her word that nobody would hear about him telling her from her was good enough to be getting on with.

He smiled at her apparent impatience to hear the story and he could completely understand that. Without any hesitation he replied, “I happened to overhear a conversation between Logan Baker – a deceptively large Gryffindor sixth year – who was trying to convince Sophie Cunningham – a remarkably annoying seventh year – that they should go down to Hogsmeade together.”

“She wasn’t having it,” he continued with a shrug, “but he was pretty persistent and brought up just how much fun they’d had with Philip when they’d jumped you. There weren’t too many other kids in the common room at the time and I think they were actually trying to be quiet. There were only four of us in the room – other than those two – but their talk attracted the attention of a pair of the others who came over and started asking questions.”

“I’m not sure if they even believed they’d done it but they kept asking questions and pressing for information. At least, they did until Philip came down the steps and about lost his mind. He chased the audience away and reamed the two out about talking about what they’d done.”

With a shake of his head he finished, “Philip Kent was the ring leader – he’s a weasely little bastard, a sixth year Gryffindor, and they didn’t hang around long after his haranguing.”

“If it hadn’t been for Philip’s over reaction, frankly I would have thought the other two were liars. They’d have been stupid enough to come up with an idea like attacking you – but I don’t think they’d have been smart enough to plan it out without getting caught.”

Sitting quietly Maz let Aiden speak without interruption from her. The first two names she had no recollection of but at the mention of Philip Kent she looked hurt for a second before the anger set back in. By the time the Gryffindor boy had finished his tale the Hufflepuff was shaking with rage.

Never in her life had she felt such anger coursing through her veins. So intense it was that she sprang to her feet as her eyes darkened further than ever before and she quickly passed the boy with a yell of "Phillip Fuckin' Kent!".

Her brain soon caught up with emotion and the girl stopped just two paces beyond Aiden. For a while she didn't move but stood statue still with hands clenched to fists at her side as she stared at the floor. Just under her breath she was muttering. "Amount of times ah've backed that fuckin' c**t! Lives in wan eh mah fuckin' house practically rent free! Known 'im fae we wur weans! Takin' fuckin' liberties is what it is!"

The rage which had only been lightly capped was threatening to break free again. Maz even began to think she might just toddle along to the Gryffindor corridor there and then. She'd wait as long as she had to on the three who'd been named and when she got her hands on them... well, she wouldn't be responsible for her actions.

She knew though, even as she thought it that she couldn't. A mere beating was no where near enough for those three. She'd threatened Hell and Hell is exactly what they were going to get. There was no need for her to doubt Aiden's words and she didn't spot a lie in his tone or body language. She had her targets all that was left now was for her to be smart and not react off the cuff as she so often did.

"Well then..." Maz finally turned back to Aiden with a smile that didn't reach her still dark eyes. "Ah suppose..." But she didn't know what she supposed as as she looked at the boy Maz was aware of a wetness on her cheeks. Though she'd have liked to have said it as purely from anger and denied any and all upset she couldn't. Maz was upset and the tears slowly working their way from her eyes were very real.

Brushing them away she tried to smile again but largely missed the effort. The issue wasn't just who had attacked her but the fact that since they'd bragged openly of it once they'd most likely done so previously. No one had told her! Not one soul had bothered. Did she really matter so little to everyone that none who knew her would step up? Did she matter so little that one she'd almost thought of as a friend, Phillip, would be responsible? A great feeling of being alone entered Maz's heart. After months alone in the hospital wing she was feeling pretty low on that front anyway.

"Thank you." She spoke in an almost whisper trying to disguise the tremor in her voice. "For tellin' me an' again ah promise nuhin' wull come back on yi... even if it does jist lit me know an' ah'll sort it."

The wetness was back just below her eyes. Again she swiped it away as she moved towards the window and stared out with unseeing eyes. All her vague plans had fled in the face of her upset and rage but she knew they'd return. Maz just had to calm herself down to the point where she could think straight. An impossible task it seemed right then.

The shock at the mention of Kent’s name had been impossible to miss. Then, Maz looked so pissed off that Aiden almost considered stopping there rather than finish the story. However, the story was what she’d asked for so he did finish. He blinked and fought the urge to step back as she leapt to her feet, shouting. It seemed incredibly unlikely that she was going to hurt him for telling her what she wanted to know.

He watched as she stalked past him and then came to an abrupt halt. Not really knowing what to say or do, he kept his silence and waited to see just what was going to happen next. Her muttering wasn’t as quiet as she might have meant it to be and he couldn’t help but hear; it made the entire situation even more unacceptable than it had been that Kent actually knew her and clearly owed her for what she’d done for him.

Still, nothing she’d said or done had actually been directed at him and so he waited.

The forced smile on her face as she turned toward him was almost enough to make him shiver. It clearly wasn’t meant and he almost felt pity for the idiots that had put that look on her face. Whatever came next for them wasn’t going to be pleasant; though, they’d more than earned it. The tears on her face were the next thing he noticed. If he’d known her better he’d have tried to give her a comforting hug, or at least offer some tissues or something. Though, from what he’d seen and heard of Maz Cowan he settled on just not drawing any attention to them.

Everything he’d heard about her told him that she wasn’t the sort to appreciate a shoulder to cry on. He’d probably already done everything he could to help by sharing the information he’d had.

“There’s nothing to thank me for,” he replied sincerely, “you needed to know. I trust that you’ll be able to do whatever it is you’ve got planned without it falling on me.”

As she turned to face the window he continued, “If there’s anything else that I can do to help, just let me know. There is no possible situation where what they did was warranted or acceptable – they need to pay for it.”

While Maz had heard Aiden she didn't respond, instead choosing to stare out into the space outside the window. She wasn't seeing what was there however. Instead she saw herself visiting immense pain upon the three named minutes before. How good it would be to get her hands on them, to hear their pain with every kick and punch, to feel their bodies break because of her...

Again Maz had to forcefully remind herself that violence was not the answer, not enough on this occasion. The knowledge didn't stop her wishing it was enough though. Her hands even curled to fists at her sides, the short nails digging into her palms. She reminded herself yet again that she could not waste her opportunity. She would react fists first without thinking. A well thought out plan would be much better. Maz knew that once she calmed down she'd see reason.

Calming down was proving difficult and the urge to punch out building rather than lessening. It was in her gut the need to react, the need to defend her name. A desire to show the world that she was not and never would be anyone's punching bag. How could she, the violent person she was, ignore it?

Truth was, Maz couldn't and that was why, without warning, without a sound her fist connected with a one of the square window panes causing cracks to spider outward from the impact. An immediate pain jarred up her arm but went largely unheeded as she drew her fist back and punched again. The middle f the pane split, chunks breaking out. And again Maz punched ignoring the blood that had burst from her hand. Finally the glass shattered properly and the girl let her hand drop back to her side. Still clenched into a fist that dripped blood to the floor.

As stupid a move as it was. As painful as she was sure it would prove to be. Taking her anger out on the window had worked. Already the thoughts of seeking out her attackers immediately were being slotted to the back of her mind while one name in particular jumped to the front. With a grin that spoke nothing but bad intentions Maz turned back to Aiden.

"Dinnae tell a soul yi telt me." She answered him at last. The smile on her face slowly changed to one less wicked, a friendlier look. "An' always remember ah owe yi. Yi ever need backup jist lit me know."

It was always interesting to watch someone else go through the process of fighting back the urge to rush off and punch someone in the face. The look on her face as she restrained herself was one that was all too familiar to him; given the number of times that he’d found himself in the same situation. The longer he watched her, the more Aiden was curious about whether or not she’d win out over the bloodlust. Clearly the answer was no, and he jumped in surprise as she lashed out and hit one of the windows.

Fortunately, while the glass spider-webbed, it didn’t shatter. Before he’d had a chance to relax, however, she continued to lash out until the glass was well and truly broken and blood dripped from her hand to pool upon the floor. He couldn’t help but smile back at her with her comment, “I won’t do anything to interfere in whatever you’ve got lined up – and you don’t owe me anything. Not for this. They’re Gryffindors and if I don’t do something then what they did would go unpunished. That isn’t acceptable.”

“In fact, it’s almost like you’re doing me a favor, so how about we call it even at this point?”

At least it seemed like the initial violence was over; Aiden motioned toward her hand – not sure if it was her good hand or not - and drew his wand, “Want me to patch that up? So you’re not leaving a trail wherever you’re off to next?”

Maz shrugged her shoulders, "If yi like." she answered lightly. She'd call it even if that's what he wanted. Though she did like what he said about the Gryffindor's. It would be most unacceptable if they went unpunished. They wouldn't learn a damn thing and Maz wanted them to learn, wanted them to learn the hard way.

Curling her hand into a fist again she brought it up to look at the wound. It wasn't that bad really. The puddling of blood made it look a lot worse. She knew she should have held it up, keeping it low only encouraged the flow.

She smiled at Aiden now, a genuine smile. "Would yi?" Maz glanced at her hand again. "Should probably learn eh favour mah left haun... this is mah wand hand." Her brow flicked as she appeared amused which she actually was. The ridiculousness of the moment coming home to her and it was ridiculous to punch a window. She could have just gone and found another student to annoy until they lashed out giving her reason to fight back. Not the fairest thing to do to another person but hey, as Maz was constantly finding life wasn't always fair.

After taking a step closer to the Gryffindor she held her hand out while she let her fingers relax. They wouldn't stretch fully, the glass having pierced just the right place to bring pain at the lower joints. "Ah'll fix the windae." That was something she could manage left-handed. There was little risk to her person performing magic on the window with her less-favoured hand. She pulled her wand from one of its usual resting places down the front of her top pointed it at the shattered pane and silently cast the spell. The glass took a while to slot back into place the effect a bit like watching an invisible hand complete a jigsaw then with a thin light the cracks repaired themselves. It was nice to watch Maz thought, soothing in it's own way.

It surprised him a bit that she so willingly accepted his help, though he couldn’t exactly put his finger on why that was the case. With a grin, he pulled his wand and patched her up with a few quick healing spells. After his run ins with Pavon, they were something he’d taken the time to learn just in case. He didn’t want to have to run to get help if they had another encounter. Fortunately, it seemed that something else must have caught the older boy’s attention – as he’d been hiding somewhere in the dungeons for quite a while.

“There you go,” he said with a chuckle, “all better!”

“Or at least better enough to be getting on with. It shouldn’t scar,” he finished with a shrug. It wasn’t like he was a professional or anything, but the injury hadn’t been all that impressive.

As she mentioned that she was going to fix the window he started to say, “Don’t…” but it was too late and the damage was all repaired. The broken glass would have been a pretty cool mystery and the school could always use a little bit of character from this sort of thing. It would have been neat to hear what rumors the other students could have come up with when they’d started to see it.

The little unexplained stuff, like a cracked window, tended to lend themselves to the best stories.

All that done, he smiled and said, “I hope you get everything taken care of to your satisfaction. If there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know.”

“Have a good evening, Maz,” he finished as the two parted and made their way to wherever their next destinations were.
