Abby was at loose ends. All of her homework as completed. There didn’t seem to be anyone else around for her to talk to. She huffed out of pure boredom. She glanced around the common room once more for something to do that would hold her attention and came up empty. She stood, went to get bundled up, and made her way through the castle and out onto the grounds.
Being February, it was still really cold. She could see her breath every time she exhaled. She could feel the cold in her chest. She hated winter. She loved being out in nature, but how could she enjoy it when she was shivering so much that she could barely walk? She pulled her wand from her pocket and cast a couple of warming charms on herself and her clothing.
Those didn’t work as well as she’d hoped, but she really didn’t want to go back inside. She went further out onto the grounds. Finding an open area, she cast a small bluebell flames charm. That should help keep her warm.

Abby was running gleefully through the Hogwarts corridors. She was happy to have received a good grade on an essay. She’d worked really hard on it. She didn’t even care that she would be alone in this happiness. Her parents just expected good grades, so they wouldn’t understand. She’d barely even seen her brother and sister except at mealtimes, and then they were busy with their own friends.
Suddenly, she heard a few people talking. She wouldn’t have paid attention, but she’d heard her name. After that, there was no way she wasn’t going to stop and listen. She rolled her eyes as she heard complaints about her using her allure on the professor for the grade. She’d finally seen the sense of not letting things like that bother her. After all, her allure hadn’t even fully come into effect yet. “I can hear you!” she sing-songed loudly as she passed the room. She giggled as the room went silent.
She shook her head and kept walking. That grade, the result of her hard work, and all by herself with no help, deserved a celebration. She decided that she was going to the kitchens. The house elves were always happy to give her whatever she wanted.
Entering the kitchen, she grinned as the little elves crowded around her, wondering what she wanted. “I would like to celebrate this O I got on my essay,” she told them happily. Before she could blink, she was put at the table and there was a cupcake in front of her, along with some pumpkin juice. “Thank you!” she exclaimed.

Abby was hiding in the dungeons. She’d found a little recess in the wall and hoped no one would find her there. She was crying because of something that had happened a few minutes earlier. She’d been on the way to the kitchens, hoping for a snack, when she’d been cornered by a much older student, one who must be a seventh year or something, because he definitely needed to shave.
”Well, well,” he’d started. “If it isn’t the tiny little veela.”
She hadn’t made a secret of her veela heritage, but she hadn’t been broadcasting it either. She was too young to cause the more well-known urges. She’d tried to be nice and polite. “Can I help you with something?” she’d asked.
“I don’t need your help,” he’d sneered. “I don’t even know why you’re here. Your kind shouldn’t be allowed in school. The way you can make people do things is no better than the Imperious curse. You shouldn’t even exist.”
She’d hoped that since she had been allowed to attend the school, as had her older sister, that the way of thinking this boy was experiencing had died out. “I’m not doing anything to you,” she pointed out, trying to keep her voice from shaking.
“Only because I’m immune to you and your sister,” he’d shot back.
“Leave me alone,” she’d commanded.
“One day,” he’d told her, “You will get what’s coming to you.”
That had scared her and she ran to hide.
She was trying to cry quietly, but she wasn’t good at doing that. All she could hope was that no one would hear her.
