Truth Or Dare, Open to third year and up students
Caryn Taylor

Caryn was excited. She’d had an idea and had wanted to share it. Sure, it was somewhat muggle, but she’d made sure to put a magical twist on it. Invitations had been passed around to every house. She’d only given a few days’ notice, not wanting to give much time for the professors to hear about it.

She had invited every student third year and up to play Truth or Dare. She only hoped none of the really young students heard about the invitation.

She’d made her way to the Room of Requirement early. She’d made sure that there were plenty of drinks available, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. There was also a mild truth potion added to every drink. The potion wasn’t a strong one. It was even completely legal. It didn’t force the drinker to tell the truth. It was just a mild compulsion to be honest while slight enough to easily overcome it if desired. She’d also made sure there were plenty of snacks around in case anyone was hungry.

Now, all she had to do was wait and hope people thought it was a fun idea and came.

"Ye dinnae half talk some shite you." Maz told the Head Boy as they walked through the door to the Room of Requirement, a discussion from before finding the door resuming.

"No I'm not. I can do it." The boy shot back. "I can tell just with a look."

Maz laughed, "Yer forgettin' last week when ye bored me way this. Five folk ye guessed an' four wer wroooooong!" She drew the word out comically. They both laughed. It had been a tough year for the pair of them being personalities that naturally didn't get on well but they'd found a way. It had taken a long time but they'd found it. She felt he was still a bit too pervy at times and he felt she was sometimes too bossy. They managed to tolerate that in each other and sometimes could actually get on quite well.

The girl turned away from the boy to take in the all but empty room. She shot a glance at him. "Telt ye it wiz early yet." Shaking her head she smiled at the girl keeping the room from being totally devoid of others. "Hey, listen, we're no here eh put a stop tae this, that's no been oor game this year." They both agreed that parties were a must. They'd taken on all patrols on Halloween night so the Prefects could make the student parties after curfew. This occasion being in the Room of Requirements suited them, meant they could at least come along.

While the Head Boy sat himself in the corner of the room Maz explained further. "Dinnae know if we'll get intae the game, probably just sit aboot... check the halls every noo an' again." She wasn't asking the girls permission, it was like she could stop Maz doing exactly what she wanted. No, the older girl was merely being polite.

"Our feelin' is we're better off here. Git shit aff professor's either way." Another issue both Head Girl and Boy agreed on. If they didn't know about it then they hadn't done what they were supposed to and watched the student body. Whether there or not the pair were in trouble and as both said, 'Better for the dragon than the egg.'

Caryn startled when the door to the room opened to show the Head Boy and Girl. While she knew that Aiden had gone out with the Head Girl once or twice, she didn’t know the girl well. She did have to breathe a sigh of relief as Maz said they weren’t there to stop the game. “Well, thanks,” she replied. “I was thinking that with the weather, we all needed something fun to do to cheer us up.” The weather had been pretty dreary, which was why Caryn had tried so hard to think of something that could be fun.

Caryn shook her head, smiling. “Well, you can do whatever you want, especially since you’re not here to stop it. But wouldn’t you have more fun if you joined the game?” She hadn’t really considered what questions could be asked or what dares could be given. She’d never actually played the game herself. She’d heard of it and thought it sounded like fun.

“Well, feel free to sit or join,” Caryn said again. “I mean, if you’re going to get in trouble for it anyway, then you may as well make it worth it. It’s just my hope that we get at least a nice-sized group to make it interesting.” She was a little upset that her best friend hadn’t shown up yet, but she was trying not to let it bother her. She was also a bit disappointed that no one else had shown up yet. Then she realized that it was still early, in fact, after casting a tempus spell, she still had ten minutes before the time she’d been telling people.

She wanted to ask if the Head Students had seen anyone else heading that way, but she refrained. She didn’t want to sound whiny or needy.

Maz nodded her agreement with Caryn’s point. The Scot knew well the need for cheering up during the winter months, it was called for in the summer time too given how little Scotland saw the sun some months.

“Probably, but ah’ve goat tae start practicing this responsibility thing sometime.” Maz answered, cheeky grin in place.

“It’ll be fine. Fowk are comin’.” The Head Girl reassured the younger student. For though she hadn’t seen anyone making their way to the room yet she had spoken to a few who said they would be going.

“I’ll join in.” The Head Boy piped up from his corner. “I’m game.”

Maz laughed and as she walked over to join him loudly told the him. “Aye, but only cause ye ‘hink aw the dares’ll be snogging an’ you’re hard up.” She sat beside him on the floor.

“Am not. Could have you if I wanted.” He responded to her sullenly.

“Aw go oan then.” Maz told him leaning towards him. “Want it!”

The pair stared at each other a couple beats before bursting out laughing. It was good when they laughed for if they didn’t laugh they just bickered.

Gideon didn’t know if he was running late or not. He’d needed to check something in the library so told Sasha he’d meet her in the Room of Requirement but he’d forgotten to take his watch with him. Uselessly it had sat on his bedside cabinet all day and while he’d reminded himself to go get it many times he’d never gotten round to actually going to his dorm.

Hurrying along the top floor of the castle the boy reminded himself of what the invitation said. How they were to open the door. Gideon didn’t have much practice with this particular room but had been assured getting into it was easier than it seemed.

Even though he was following the instructions to the letter it was still on his third attempt that the door made itself seen. “Yay!” Gideon jumped happily. He’d done it! All by himself he’d done it.

Still on a high from his success Gideon didn’t hesitate before he walked into the room and closed the door behind him. Looking around he realised that the watch didn’t matter. He was obviously here early and wasn’t making Sasha wait for him.

Finding himself a spot against the wall he leaned against it. It would be fine to wait for Sasha there, she’d see him as soon as she came in. “Hi Maz.” Spotting the older student he greeted her, a little red in the face now. She waved and greeted him in return, the Head Boy too. Gideon was elated.

A Truth or Dare party. Could be fun, Sasha thought when she heard about it. She wasn’t sure she’d go until Gideon had asked her if she was going. With that, she knew he wanted to go, but wouldn’t go without her. She decided then that she would go and she’d have fun. Because why not? School was boring. There hadn’t been anything fun since Halloween.

She knew she’d be running a bit behind, but she’d chosen her clothes carefully. She wanted to look cute, but she also wanted to make sure she didn’t look like she tried too hard. Finally satisfied, she added some lip gloss and set off for the Room of Requirement.

Following the directions on how to get into the party, Sasha entered pretty easily. She glanced around, not sure how to feel about Gideon arriving first. Should she be sorry that she was later or just happy that he’d gone on in without loitering around the door? She settled for happy.

She stepped over to him and the Head Girl. “Hey, Gideon. Glad to see you made it. Hey, um, Maz, right?”

Arwen was instantly intrigued when she had heard about a Truth or Dare party being held in the Room of Requirements. It was a room she hadn't much used before and that alone would be enough to convince her to tag along and check it out. Plus she would use any excuse to sneak through the castle to find something fun to do, it was just a shame she couldn't bring her brother. Although it probably wouldn't be a great thing...

With a giggle she made her way through the castle, her brown locks bouncing around her head. She had chosen to just leave her hair down and natural, forging straightening it. She had quite liked the little curls that were now forming in her hair, thinking that they made her look a little more mature. That, however, would be shattered when they actually spoke to her.

Finally reaching the Room of Requirements she followed the directions that had been told to enter the room, walking in and seeing only a handful of people. Most of whom she didn't actually know. That never stopped her from talking before and she bounding through the room with a wide smile.

Now being further into the room she actually recognised two of the students, mostly due to them being in the same year as her. If she wasn't mistaken the boy was called Gideon and she was pretty sure that the girl was Sasha. "Hi!" She called to the group, giving a small wave.

Kerri wouldn’t have missed any kind of party, prefect or not. Who cared about responsibilities when there was fun to be had? Not her! She’d been hoping something would happen to liven up the cold months.

She happily completed her early patrol before making her way to the Room of Requirement. She hadn’t found anything that she shouldn’t have, so her mood hadn’t been dampened in the least. Not that she usually found anything she had to deal with. On the rare occasions she did, she just sent the students on their way. She’d never found anything she thought was worth reporting to the professors.

She entered the room and immediately made her way over to the drinks table. She was thirsty after wandering over most of the castle. She grabbed a pumpkin juice before glancing around to see who else was there.

She wasn’t really surprised to see the Head students there and nodded in acknowledgment to them. “How’s everyone doing?” She included everyone in the room in her questioned greeting.

She found a spot to have a seat while she sipped on her pumpkin juice and waited for things to get started. She only hoped more people would show up. If they didn’t, this would be a very boring and repetitive game.

Poppy had been in two minds about going to this truth or dare thing. She’d asked around to see who was all going and that had made up her mind. So, after successfully managing to make the door appear she walked into the room after taking a last look to make sure no one was there.

This was a totally new room to her. She wasn’t much of an explorer and preferred to keep mostly to her common room anyway, except this year when she’d been spending time with Cecily of course. It was a shame that Cecily wouldn’t be there for the game though Poppy had to wonder if the game was why younger students wouldn’t be there. She had an idea of what the game was but she’d never played.

Normally Poppy would have walked straight over to the purebloods she could see but since they were with a muggleborn. She merely nodded in their direction. Then there was the two head students in the corner. The girl sent a nod their way too though she wanted to scowl at Cowan. The older girl annoyed her and really the evening would be better were she not here.

After getting a drink Poppy stood somewhat removed from the group and shot glances at the door hoping someone she could talk to would walk through it. She played with the straw in her drink, moving it through the liquid.

Gideon greeted Sasha happily when she arrived. Then Arwen too when she greeted them. They were in the same year and he hadn’t had a run in with her, actually he thought her quite nice. His returning wave was also a gesture inviting her over. He was getting just slightly bold as he got older. The Head students returned everyone’s greetings but seemed a step removed from proceedings as they kept to their own space.

As the small group formed Gideon found himself wondering just what they were going to be doing. Poppy arrived, Gideon knew her a little and for many years though they didn’t speak much at school. He returned her nod not even expecting her to come over. She was a quite strict in her purist views he remembered. As strict as he was supposed to be.

The girl who addressed the room at large was a familiar face though not a known name. Gideon left it to others to answer her. There were times when he could barely speak for himself, he was not about to attempt speaking for others.

“What is Truth or dare? I don't think I've played before.” He asked those he stood with. “Do we need many more people?” He hoped so for if he needed to it was much easier to hide in a large crowd.

While not the first person to arrive, there wasn't any way in the world that Aiden was going to miss this. Even if it hadn't been arranged by his best friend he wouldn't have missed a chance to blow off some steam. With the death of the Headmaster and then the weather that was always somewhat depressing this time of year, the school had taken on a remarkably maudlin feel and it was driving him insane. A smile flashed across his face as he saw that there were already more than a few people there - that was a good start at least.

It would be interesting to see just how many people showed up. Truth or Dare was one of those things that were always better with more people involved. Honestly, it was that way with pretty much any party game.

Aiden slipped past the refreshment table to grab a glass before moving over to where Caryn was standing and greeted her happily, "This was a brilliant idea."

Nate blasted through the doorway, a practically vibrating ball of energy. When he'd seen the invite to this thing he knew he had to go. Everyone seemed so down or stressed recently and he was dying for something fun to do. His eyes scanned the room looking for someone he knew. Aiden and Caryn were standing across the room talking and he waved at them before his eyes settled on a group of students from his year. Granted, they weren't from his house, but that meant less than nothing to Nate.

With a spring in his step, he made his way over to Arwen, Gideon, and Sasha, "Hi!"

"This is awesome that they set this up! It's going to be so much fun!"

"I wonder if they're going to do stuff like this more often!" he asked excitedly as he looked around at his new group of friends.

In contrast with most of the other attendees, Theron had started out his day with no attention of attending this ridiculous party. The last thing that he wanted to do was spend any more time with any of the people from his house than he absolutely had to. Apparently, they'd decided that if he'd stayed behind he was likely to report them - a supposition that wasn't exactly wrong - and they'd made it more than clear that he was going to be coming with them or they were going to make his life miserable.

As such, he arrived in the Room of Requirement in a small knot of seventh year Gryffindors who immediately scattered through the room looking for friends. With a sigh, Theron made his way into the room - looking for somewhere that he could sit and brood in peace.

Or, that had been his plan before he spotted Poppy off to the side and he altered his path to join her. The first signs of a smile on his face, he greeted, "I didn't expect to see you here tonight, though I'm grateful not to be alone."

Poppy found herself becoming more and more agitated as each person arrived and was not a fellow pureblood. Where were her dorm mates? Where were the boys from her year? Where was anyone who had told her they were coming? Obviously they were pulling some trick on her. Poppy scowled at the thought.

Just as she had worked up the courage to leave and storm back to the Slytherin common room the door opened again. Finally there was a pureblood amongst the crowd entering and the scowl dropped from Poppy’s face to be replaced by a bright, happy smile.

“Theron!” She greeted him enthusiastically when he approached her. “I wasn’t going to come but I was talked into it… I think they were trying to prank me.” She checked the door when it opened again but saw no snakes amongst the people. “I’m so glad you’re here. I was just about to leave.” Though they were somewhat removed from the rest Poppy still kept her voice low as she spoke.

“What made you come? Do you want to risk getting a drink? I think there’s bottles.” It was a bottle she was thinking of taking. She would touch nothing that had been poured by another’s hand.

Neither Tim nor Amber had been really sold on whether or not to attend the Truth or Dare game. It seemed mostly like a way to embarrass yourself and to get drunk. They didn’t really feel the need for a game to do their drinking. Honestly, it just seemed more like an opportunity to get caught out of bounds with as many people as had gotten an invite, but in the end they decided that they may as well put in an appearance before they took off and found somewhere to have their own fun.

There were already more kids in the Room when they arrived than Tim would have expected. With a chuckle, he slipped his arm around Amber’s waist before leaning in and whispering, “I think you were right. There are too many people here of too many different Houses. This party is doomed.”

“We can take a quick pass through the room, then how about we get out of here?”

Amber really hadn’t wanted to go to the Truth or Dare party. She kind of felt that staying in the common room finishing up the homework for the week actually sounded like more fun that doing stupid stuff that would give other people blackmail material. That is, if she understood the point of the game. What else would the point be other than to see how badly one could be embarrassed?

She nodded as Tim whispered to her. “Well, it is a Gryffindor throwing it. I’m not sure what else you expected. Why are we here again?” How had she even come to agree to put in an appearance? She honestly couldn’t remember that part. She couldn’t think of anything she wanted less. There was no way she was going to actually participate in this idiocy. Who knew what Gryffindors would try to make her tell or do?

Okay. That was how she’d agreed. She’d almost forgotten that Tim had said he’d just wanted to check it out. Somehow, she’d thought he might want to stay. Even if he just wanted to watch. She knew staying to watch could be fun, but she could think of much better things to do with her time. She smiled at his suggestion. “Lead the way. Sooner we do that, the sooner we can leave for our own private party, right?” she winked.

The grin turned more dismissive as he took in the room, after Amber’s words. She was absolutely right; this was a Gryffindor event. If it hadn’t been for the expected humor of watching them make fools of themselves, he wouldn’t have wanted to come at all. His grin flared back into a smile at her agreement and he nodded, “That was my thought exactly.”

There actually weren’t too many people in the room that he was interested in talking to. Gideon was there, and he wouldn’t have minded stopping by to say hi, but the kid was already engrossed in a conversation with another group. The only people he saw that were close to their age were Gryffindors – though there were a couple prefects.

Just as he was about to call it a night and say they might as well duck out early, the crowd shifted, and then he spotted Maz and the Headboy across the room. He looked over at Amber happily and said, “Maz is here, let’s go say hi – then we can get out of here.”

Tim led Amber across the room to where Maz and her counterpart were laughing about something. With a grin, he joined in, “I didn’t expect you two to be here. Are you going to be playing? Cause that would be something to see.”

Still in the corner with her sometimes friend Maz was now trying to teach him some Scottish children’s songs.

“Naw, naw, dinnae say it English. Need tae git mair slang intae it. Listen.”

“Whit the fuck diz it matter whit it means? It’s a stupit wee song aboot crows sittin’ oan a wall… it doesnae huv tae mean any’hin’.” The pair started bickering, him insulting Scotland and her insulting his face. It was lucky for the rest in the room that Amber and Tim approached them.

After a final scowl in the Head Boy’s direction Maz turned to her friends. “This fud here’s ‘hinkin’ aboot it.” She answered Tim. “Am no gaun near it, just here cause if they’re gittin’ caught ah’d prefer the professor’s thought we were in the loop.”

The Head Boy nodded his agreement and Maz, still slightly put out at his insults to her beautiful country rounded on him. “Whit you noddin’ it yah twat? Cannae even pronounce craw right.”

“It’s a stupid unreal word from an equally unreal dialect.” He answered scowling at the girl.

It was still a relatively new experience to have people be excited when he showed up, and a legitimate smile spread across his face at Poppy’s reaction. A soft chuckle escaped him as he replied, “It’s good to see you too.”

“I’m really glad you came – this would have been a remarkably boring night otherwise.”

He couldn’t help but be a bit jealous that the worst she had to worry about was a bit of pranking if she’d decided not to come. There was no question in his mind that it would have been a lot worse for him if he’d tried to blow off the evening. When she mentioned she’d been thinking about heading out he shook his head and replied, “Please don’t. My guards,” here he motioned to the people that had led him in, “aren’t likely to let me make a run for it without a fuss.”

“They have it in their mind that I’ll turn them in to a Professor if I’m given the chance.”

His eyes darted over toward the drinks and the bottles before he answered, “It might be safe if we can find a sealed bottle. Other than that, I don’t think I’d trust anything that this crowd put out for a party like this.”

While Poppy was happy to see Theron she was happier at how pleased he seemed to be seeing her. It was always good to know that your company was wanted.

“I’d think it’s going to be boring anyway. Earlier when we were talking about it in the common room someone said something about secrets and I thought for a minute that might be good but… what’s anyone going to share with a room full of people? Just the boring stuff.”

She certainly wouldn’t tell any secrets given the mix of people in the room. She was reluctant to share any of her secrets with anyone, except Cecily who she didn’t tell everything anyway.

“Your guards?” She frowned, confused. Then he pointed them out. When he further explained she got angry on his behalf. “Well, those filthy little presumers! How dare they?”

The she leaned closer to him mischievous grin in place. “Would you?” She asked in a cheeky whisper.

They walked over to the table, Poppy nodding agreement to Theron’s statement as they went. She glanced up and down the table. “We could always call an elf and get them to bring us something.” She suggested.
