Sitting at the table with the other seventh years Maz was getting more agitated by the second. She had the librarian checking over her shoulder every minute or so and it didn’t help that Dusty sitting beside her was trying to calm her down. The more he whispered at her side the more she wanted to punch him in the face. Her hands became fists and she really had no clue just how much longer she could hold the outburst in. It was destined to happen now, she’d past the point of no return just a couple of minutes before.

She’d made herself a bet though. A bet that this year would be the one year she did not go off on one at the librarian. Every single year around exam time she’d done it and earned herself a ban from the library. She’d wanted to prove something to herself but maybe that something was just too damn difficult.

As her eyes bored into the page of the charms book opened on the table before her Maz started muttering under her breath. She’d be very surprised if anyone else at the table could understand her since she was laying the accent on as thickly as she could and throwing in every word of slang she knew. It wasn’t helping, not in the slightest.

“Will ye wrap it way yer hissin’ in mah fuckin’ ear!” She turned to face Dusty and all but screamed in his face. “It’s not fuckin’ helpin’! Twat!”

The librarian moved to speak but Maz was on her feet already. “An’ you!” She growled and left very little space between them. “You better hope ah dinnae see you when ah’ve left this school!” Even though there was very little room Maz moved closer. “Ah will make you pay fur every vulture look, every sigh, every tsk and every single fuckin’ snidey look! Ah fuckin’ promise you that!”

While the librarian took to loudly banning Maz from the room for life Maz was already on her way out, flipping the double bird over her shoulders as she went. She stopped at the doors holding them open as she looked back into the room.

“Shove yer library up yer fuckin’ arse!” She roared, turned on her heel and let the doors slam behind her.

Well that was that. She was probably going to be in a lot of trouble for that later but really, what could anyone expect? There was enough stress for the students without the librarian adding to it. It wasn’t totally her fault, she’d been pushed into her outburst. Forced even. At least it wasn’t for nothing - it had worked. Already she felt much better than she had, there was even a spring in her step as she walked away from the doors, singing quietly as she went.

After only a few steps she almost bumped into another seventh year, only avoiding a collision at the last minute by skipping to the side. “Hey Aliana!” She greeted the Gryffindor happily. “Yer no gaun eh the library ur ye?” It was obvious she was. Where else would she be going in this corridor? “Ah’d advise ye no eh. Ah’ve just goat done kickin’ aff in there.”

The Hufflepuff looked around. She needed something to do and since Aliana was right there she may as well be roped in too. Aliana was always good for a laugh and she tended to go along with Maz’s crazier schemes more than anyone else in the castle.

“How handy is yer broomstick? How quick kin ye git it if ye wanted?” Maz asked as she looked back to the other girl. “Am ‘hinkin’ aboot gittin’ mine an’ huvin’ a game eh Chicken aff the Quidditch stands… Fancy it?”

Chicken off the stands was a plan Maz had in mind for years now but one she’d never quite worked up the courage to carry out. Since she didn’t have very much time left before the option would be gone she decided it was now or never. She couldn’t possibly let the chance slip away. It was too good an idea for that.

It was a strange version of Maz that listened to the Headmaster’s announcement without passing comment and then walked all the way to the egg hunt without uttering a single word. Dressed all in black with the hood of her jumper pulled over her head it was obvious to her fellow Hufflepuffs that the Head Girl was not available for company that day. Maz was in a mood, mostly at herself and just a little at others for having the cheek to exist.

Even as she argued with Dusty during the Minister’s speech she didn’t seem her usual self. For one thing she never raised her voice once and nor did she threaten the boy as she tried to convince him to cover for her. She also spent far too much of her time looking around with narrowed eyes as if she expected something to happen.

“Ah’ve covered fur every wan eh you.” She told the boy quietly as the speech came to an end and she turned away from the Prefect. “Dae it or don’t. Ah fail eh give a fuck.”

With her hands shoved into her jeans pocket Maz kicked her booted feet as she walked back the way they’d just come. She didn’t care if she got caught, she didn’t care if she got into trouble. She was leaving the field and that was that. The pub beckoned.

Luck was on her side as she made it out of the field and back to the village without being stopped. She glanced around herself, looking once at The Three Broomsticks before setting her course for The Hog’s Head. A much less pleasant establishment but one that suited the mood she found she couldn’t shift.

It didn’t take long for her to reach her destination walking with her hands still hidden and her head bowed. She didn’t bother taking her hood down when she reached the bar, it wasn’t needed in such a place. After ordering a beer, bottle not tap Maz sat at the table in the corner of the room furthest away from the bar and the other customers. Staring into a bottle of beer wasn’t as good as staring into a pint but she supposed it would just have to do.

“About turn, Shagger.” Maz told Tim as she took hold of his arm and turned him away from the direction he was heading. She’d just come from that way and she was not about to go back. She was looking for some company too which was why she’d sought out Tim and would drag him along with her. “You’re taking a break. Spending some time with your pal before your pal starts feeling neglected.”

With them both facing the way she wanted Maz looped her arm with his and started walking deeper into the dungeons. As they went Maz kept up her show of being a normal person. It had been weeks since her talk with the Headmaster and the girl was actually surprised that she hadn’t given up yet. While she’d kept the changes in herself in company she’d also told the Prefects that from now on they went by the book, played by the rules as they were set. Of course they probably wondered why but they went along with her with minimal fuss. After all, it meant less work for them.

When they’d finally left the last person behind and were well out of sight having rounded a bend Maz relaxed, affecting again her regular strides. With her free hand she pulled her hair from the high ponytail she’d forced it into that morning. She was running her fingers through her hair trying to comb it out as they walked along a corridor to the left. It wasn’t until they turned the next bend that she gave up, deciding she’d surely done enough.

They’d been there before of course, in front of the wall with the two torches but the connection wasn’t being made in Maz’s mind… at least not on any level she was aware of. The hidden room was simply one of the places she went when she really wanted to get away from everyone and stay away. Though she did have a few hidey holes she was certain only she knew of Maz didn’t mind sharing this one with Tim.

She pushed on the wall and since, unlike the last time she wasn’t out of breath she felt it move immediately. Another big push and the door swung open. As she stepped through the door Maz was already undoing her school tie. She tossed it to the side after pulling it from her neck. The room was exactly the same as last time; bare walls and three wooden crates.

“Ah need a fuckin’ break!” She told Tim leaving him to close the door while she sat on one of two crates pushed against the wall side-by-side. “Due eh crack like.” Maz undone the top two buttons of her shirt before pulling first one foot up and then the other to loosen the laces on her boots. Sitting back she crossed her legs one over the other and let out a contented sigh as she looked to the ceiling. “So much fuckin’ better!”

“An’ am so fuckin’ thankful the school doesnae huv rules aboot skirt length.” Not that her school shirts were ever that short. All were mid-thigh length including the one she was wearing then.

With a bright smile she turned her full attention on Tim. “So, how’ve ye been? Is it a bit raw yet?” She chuckled to herself at her own joke even as she looked pointedly at his special area. With Tim having reverted to type it meant she could slag him about it again. She had missed that since it was quite fun.

With some advice from the new Headmaster and even his barely concealed warning ringing in her ears Maz made her way to her Charms professor’s classroom. He was a teacher she used to quite like, if she ignored what he’d done to Tim, and in class she could, for the most part. He certainly hadn’t been a teacher she’d ever wished to avoid as she did then. The man had changed, everyone knew and it wasn’t a good change either. Of course Maz understood why he’d changed and she did feel bad for him, guilty even since she’d failed in what she’d been trying to do on the day that changed him. Understanding didn’t mean she wanted to find herself in his company though.

Reaching the door and finding it closed as she’d expected Maz stepped back from it instead of knocking. She could abandon the idea, leave it be and let the first year be for another. She could walk away from having to spend anytime with this dementor of a man and leave it to someone else. Actually she could even go find that someone else now. Or, she could just get on with it.

It was always going to be that option - getting on with it. That’s what Maz’s whole life basically amounted to she felt. Get up and get on. There was nothing else for it really, she certainly couldn’t see herself turning into some kind of eternal moper waiting around for Death’s shadow like some seemed to.

After a loud sigh at the things she had to put herself through Maz knocked on the door, quietly though. A change from her usual four loud bangs. When the door opened it was to find a much different Maz altogether. The often wild looking girl didn’t look so wild then having straightened herself up on the way. Her wavy hair, rather than seemingly having a life of its own was plaited down her back, her uniform was straight - all buttoned and everything. Even her tie was round her neck where it should be rather than sticking out of her shirt pocket or wrapping her head. Standing differently too she had her booted feet together, hands clasped behind her back and her head respectfully bowed.

She’d read into the warning words, it hadn’t been very difficult. If Professor Morrigan felt she should be a more normal kind of boring student then Maz was more than up to that challenge. At least she would be, right up until the point she got bored of it.

“Can ah have a moment of yer time please, Sir?” Her accent was changed too. The slang words dropped and the harshness around the edges replaced by that unusual Highland lilt. She raised her head, a sweet smile in place. “Professor Taggart said ah should speak tae you, Sir.”

Closer to the end of the night than the start Maz was to be found on the balcony. Partly hidden in the corner she had a bottle of vodka and blackcurrant and a small plate of sandwiches on the wall beside her. She’d been surprised to find sandwiches at such an over the top occasion, she thought they’d have been too plain for the obvious show-off the night was. It was a nice surprise, especially for her stomach since she’d skipped dinner earlier. If a person wanted to spend the night drinking they didn’t go near a full meal, finger foods were the way to go.

Standing there for a long time she enjoyed listening to the music from inside while drinking and nibbling. Of course there had been others there too, they left her alone and she did the same for them. Except for that couple who had gotten a little too over-friendly in public that she’d growled at. When they looked around they didn’t see her which made it all the more hilarious when they rushed back into the ballroom after she growled again.

Going back inside wasn’t something she wanted to do having come outside to escape the other guests. During the night she’d flitted around people she knew chatting to this and that person but always the glares, the whispers… the rage building in her gut threatening to explode in a punch to someone’s jaw. She had always felt she was good at rising above when she needed. Choosing to strike out when she wanted to. That evening was proving some of her thinking wrong. It was difficult, very difficult. When she was with someone else it was fine, she could distract herself or play it off with jokes or sarcastic remarks. When she was alone she wanted to hit.

There was no way she could though and that really was a shame because some of the people in the house fully deserved a punch to the jaw simply because they were horrible people. Not just to Maz, in general. It wasn’t going to ruin her night or put a damper on it at all for that matter. She’d still get drunk, she’d still be merry and she’d have a damn good time. Even being there alone in the corner she was enjoying herself, she didn’t always need company.

Though, if good company presented itself to her as it did when Caspian walked onto the balcony she wasn’t going to pass it up. Grinning as he walked her way she drank from the bottle as yet unnoticed.

“Well look who it isnae.” She spoke from what could be now thought of as her corner, she’d claimed it at least for the night. “Ah dae hope yer oot here lookin’ fur me eh ask me tae dance cause by this point in the night it’s just plain rude that ye huvnae.”
