While it had been her suggestion to go flying, it had mostly be made in jest. She didn't believe that they would actually want to go flying around the grounds. It wasn't that she was against flying, she just hadn't been able to practice as much as she'd like and there was a minor fear niggling at her that she may have forgotten how to and would make a fool of herself by falling off. Still as she had suggested it, she wasn't going to back out of it now.

She followed the rest of the group out of the ballroom, happily chatting as they made their way towards the grounds. There had been a split in the group when Tim went off to retrieve the brooms that they would be flying while the rest of them headed towards the grounds. They didn't have to wait too long until the brooms arrived, a grin tugging up on Lottie's face as she took one of the brooms.

"Thank you." She waited until the rest of her friends had gotten their brooms, a thrill of excitement starting to swell up inside of her. She was getting excited to start this race, though she doubted that she'd win, at least two of the people here were on the Quidditch teams, but it would at least be fun.

"What are the rules of the race? In the sense of, where too and what obstacles are we incorporating." She didn't know the grounds that well so she was looking towards the others as a guide to where they would be flying. There was a nice breeze to the air that she was sure going to factor into the flying, as least for her.

Honestly as long as she didn't fall off her broom, she'd be happy.

When Maz had thrown her arm around his shoulder Gideon had turned a bright shade of red. He left the hall with the group happily enough though. He was still feeling a warm glow just from being included and even though Maz brought on the worst of his nerves, especially in this mood he still liked her. The others too, older housemates who didn’t pick on him like some others had. The smiled didn’t leave his face the whole way out of the building.

Of course he thought the whole plan was madness. He didn’t understand why they’d go along with Maz since she was clearly on some kind of rush. By that point he was just happy that they weren’t trying to climb a rather large man or worse, feed him a baby

It was when they were outside waiting for Tim to return with the brooms that Gideon realised another spanner in the plan. It was cold! Very cold! He had no jacket having stored it away when he arrived earlier. Dress robes had no use outside of a function like the one outside. He hugged himself and huddled his head down.

He was reluctant to move his hands to take a broomstick from the older boy but he did. He held it stiffly at his side, not because he was unsure of it but thanks to the cold. He had actually become quite a decent flyer for his age. Not the fastest or the most talented but he had stopped crashing, never fell off and could keep up with most people.

Lottie’s questions were good ones so he looked from one face to the other to see who would answer.

Flying sounded great, joke or not it sounded like a brilliant plan to get away from the party and do something fun. Tim wasn’t a big fan of this type of gathering; largely because he should have been accepted into this crowd with open arms, and yet most of them still looked at him like a monkey that had learned how to do an amusing trick. As soon as they’d agreed on their course of action, he’d made his way over to the storage area where the brooms were kept.

Soon enough he’d returned and began handing out brooms so that everyone would be able to have a go and led the way off toward the entrance to the courtyard and then out onto the grounds. There hadn’t been any specific rule against leaving the Caer, so Tim happily led them out through the doors and around into the gardens as he led the way toward the woods.

“Oh, right…” Tim spoke up suddenly, “Winter!”

With a grin, he drew his wand and began casting warming spells on the others. Maz could take care of herself – and the others probably could have too, given their location – but Gideon and Lottie were both still underage to be casting magic away from school so he hit both of them with the spell. It should last long enough for them to have some fun and then get back to the Caer. If not, by the time it wore off, the adrenaline of whatever they were doing, should work just fine to keep them warm.

Lottie’s question was a good one and he offered, “We’ve got a pretty decent maze here in the garden – I’d be willing to judge since I know the way through. Alternatively, we could make it a race through the woods. There are some horse and game trails back in there that we could use for a track?”

Maz who was still on some kind of adrenaline rush and bouncing on her toes didn’t feel the cold like the others. Her only hint that it bothered her was to shift her dress so her exposed leg was mostly hidden, there was nothing she could do for her bare arms and shoulders.

She took the broom from Tim and gave it a quick inspection. She could fly anything really, even get older broomsticks to perform moves that they would be thought to be well past. All she needed was for it to be well-tended to and not list to any one side. For Maz that was the very worst thing that could go wrong with a broom and it was stupid not to take care of them in the first place.

While Tim cast the spells on himself and the others and Maz had to re-expose her leg to get her wand. She cast the same spell on herself and then, as the thought struck her accio’d her white cowboy boots from the room she’d left them in. The room was just the other side of the house and thanks to the stink of fragrances and styling products Maz had thrown the window wide open earlier. While waiting for the boots she got the broomstick to hover at her side. After taking one shoe off there was a moment when she wobbled, almost tipping over to her side into the snow. She regained her balance and hopped over to Tim, her wand stowed away and boots now in her hand. The shoe she’d taken off was tossed away.

Using Tim to steady herself Maz pulled a boot on her barefoot with one hand, switched hopping leg and took the other heel off. That too was tossed away and the remaining boot quickly pulled on. Standing again and stamping her feet Maz patted Tim on the shoulder, “Ta, mate.”

A clap of her hands had the broomstick moving to her side just as Tim gave them their options. “Listen, am no gaunae lie here - ah’d cheat in a maze.” She shrugged, that was just the way it was. “So woods? We kin allow wands then… an’ if we cast the lumos oan their wands naeb’dy kin git in any trouble.”

Even though she knew of the loophole that allowed magic to be performed in buildings that had had magical occupants for many, many years Maz wouldn’t trust in it completely. Anyway, you never knew if the Ministry would come up with a way around that to detect magic performed within the grounds or even if they had people watching. They were bound to know about the ball and be desperate to know what was going on.

It hadn’t occurred to her to bring her coat out when they originally decided that flying was a good idea, therefore she was steeling herself to just put up with the brisk weather. She reasoned it out with the heat that would form from doing the activity but was relived when Tim casted a warming spell on her. With how the ministry was run at the moment she hadn’t dared to cast magic outside of school, she hadn’t even used any during her brief stay at home. Her mother may have said that simple spells wouldn’t be that hard to detect in the estate but Lottie wasn’t risking being expelled over something silly.

“Thanks Tim.” She spoke after he had finished casting the spell on Gideon.

Both ideas were appealing, Lottie’s sense of direction wasn’t exactly the best so the maze may end with her being lost, but at least they would be having fun. As she went to reply she heard Maz speak, a surprised laugh leaving her lips as the girl spoke about cheating. It wasn’t very sporting but at least it was out in the open so they could work around something else.

“That sounds like a plan to me.” Lottie agreed. She was pretty intrigued by the idea of getting around the trace. Whether it would work or not, was another question, but it was definitely worth a shot.

Letting go of her broom to pulled her wand out from where it was stored in a holster on her hip. The holster had been her mother’s suggestion, a whispered ‘just in case’ and somehow it actually went along with her outfit. Thrice twirling around her fingers before holding the tip and offering the handle to the older students.

“Light me up and let’s get started!”

Gideon was grateful to Tim when he realised how cold it was and cast the warming charm on him. It was a whole new thing to him and he had to admit, really, really strange. To go from cold to hot in seconds just didn’t seem like something the human body should be able to manage. “Thank you.”

Frowning he watched Maz hop around and even throw away a shoe! Why anyone would throw away a perfectly good piece of footwear was beyond Gideon. Oh and there went the other one too. He watched as it sailed through the air and landed with a puff in the snow. He had always been taught to take care of his things and could never think himself capable of throwing away his shoes. But then, weren’t girls sometimes quite weird about their shoes? He’d been there once or twice when, after the winter ball or halloween party older girls had come to the common room barefoot because they’d put their heels in the bin. He’d never get it so he wasn’t going to worry himself too much about it.

So it seemed they were going to be racing through the trees… or on some kind of track. Gideon wasn’t too sure but whatever was cool with him. The maze wouldn’t have been, he’d probably go and get lost and freeze.

When Lottie held out her wand Gideon pulled his own from his pocket and held it out too. He didn’t like the idea of someone else using his wand but he knew he couldn’t cast the charm himself. Although he struggled to live by some of his grandfathers teachings the mistrust of The Ministry was so deeply rooted it was in his very nature.

He wanted to say something like Lottie had, a lump in his throat made it too difficult so he just smiled and shrugged before he too made the broom he held hoover beside him ready to mount.

Tim didn’t miss the look of relief on Lottie’s face, and he grinned before moving on to Gideon to offer the same relief from the cold. He smiled at the quiet thanks from the younger boy and offered, “Glad to help.”

When Lottie took the moment to thank him after he was done, he leaned in to whisper, “You’re welcome – we can’t have you getting cold when Amber and I don’t have the opportunity to warm you back up.”

“My pleasure,” Tim replied with an easy smile as he helped steady Maz while she got her boots on.

“I wouldn’t expect any less,” Tim replied to Maz with a mischievous grin and a shrug, “but I was offering to judge that since I’m going to cheat going through the woods. I’ve been flying these grounds for years, so if you’re prepared to lose, I’m game too.”

Lottie’s enthusiasm for the plan made him chuckle and he reached out to take her offered wand. A quick casting later and a soft, but piercing, light emanated from it that would be more than sufficient for giving her enough light to see by as they made their way through the trees. Once the spell was set, he offered it back to her with a grin and a, “Good luck!”

The wands distributed, Tim joined the others in mounting his broom.

“Aye but it’s a given you’ll be at the cheatin’ since ye live here. An’ dinnae go gettin’ cocky or yer big heid’ll pull ye aff yer broom.” Maz grinned at Tim as she mock scolded, arms crossed. “As funny as it wid be tae see yer heid furst in the snow way yer legs wavin’ ah widnae be able tae pull ye oot fur laughin’. Ah reckon yer auld man would kill me if ye froze tae death.” Usually ‘auld man’ would be slang for dad but in this instance Maz was using it to mean Richard Morrigan. A man that didn’t necessarily scare her but one she knew to be far, far more talented than she was.

Maz took Gideon’s wand from him and cast the Lumos spell to. “Here ye go kiddo.” She told him cheerily.

That done it was time to mount the brooms and Maz tried, she really did. No matter what way she sat with the dress she couldn’t get sitting quite right. “F**k Merlin!” She hadn’t given up but she was back standing beside the broomstick glaring at it. A solution to the problem just had to be found. Almost as soon as she thought it one presented itself. Maz pulled her wand again, gathered the dress in one hand as best she could. Her wand aimed at the material she had second thoughts.

“That wrinkly auld craw’ll no be happy if ah cut the dress, eh?” She didn’t wait for an answer from any of them and instead turned to mumbling, “Stupit tight dresses. F**ked up material.” While she muttered she pulled a large clip that had been hidden within her hair as well as some smaller ones. All were very plain not being intended to be seen and while they’d annoyed Maz since they’d been put in she now found herself grateful for them.

After bunching up the dress as best she could at one side and clipping it as securely as she could manage Maz mounted her broom again and after only a minimal amount of shuffling she nodded. “This is why when am pickin’ it’s always short skirts.” She proclaimed. “That an’ maybe am a bit tarty.” She tacked on the joke with a grin.

“Right, Morrigan.” Maz swept a hand forward or Tim to lead the way. When he did she followed. Following wasn’t something she done often or indeed something that came easily but she did manage to fight the urge to zip past Tim and away. The pace Tim set was easy, Gideon was keeping up well Maz noticed. Through the gardens they went only stopping briefly when they reached the woods for Tim to point out the horse trail they were to take.

Without needing a spoken word they lined up. Maz lit her own wand now. “Ready!” She called in a big voice when they were. “Set!” She paused only briefly to lean forward on the broom. “Go!”

A fierce pink tint covered Lottie’s cheeks at Tim’s words which definitely had nothing to do with the cold. She had to duck her head, pretending to fiddle with her wand holster, to be able to get the blush under control. Only replying when she was sure it was mostly under control. “It would definitely be a shame.”

Lottie listened to Tim and Maz as they discussed the race, the corner of her mouth twitching in amusement. She didn’t doubt either of them to try and cheat, it was a given, and she was truly curious as to who would win this race.

While waiting for Tim to light her wand Lottie rocked back and forth on her heels, excitement for the race bubbling up inside of her. “Thanks, and you too.” She spoke as she took back her wand, watching the light bounce around the grounds. It should do to get her through the forest, at least, and now with her wand ready she moved to mount her broom.

Glancing around at the others she caught sight of Maz trying to sit on her broom in her dress, a worried frown pulling on her face. It was amazing that Maz could find a way to fix her dress problem and lucky that she actually had pins and clips. Somehow even with the dress all bunched up it seemed to still suit Maz.

“Nothing wrong with being a bit tarty.” Lottie replied with an easy grin, kicking off the ground and hovering in the air as she waited for Tim to lead the way. She followed behind the ground, feeling the wind whip through her hair as they made their way towards the woods. Lottie eyed the horse trail that Time pointed out, nodding to herself.

Lining up next to the others she glanced sideways at Maz who was counting them down, fingers curling tightly over her broom handle and heart thrumming against her chest. She was itching to just shoot off, to gain the thrill of the flight that she didn’t often get to experience. As soon as she heard the word ‘Go’ come from Maz’s mouth she shot off, letting out a joyous ‘Woohoo’ as she flew above the forest along the trail.

Gideon only managed a quite thanks in the face of Maz’s cheeriness. He didn’t even have time to decide how he felt about being called kiddo by someone not really that much older than himself.

For reasons unknown even to himself Gideon took to examining his wand, making the mistake not once but twice of pointing the light directly in his eyes. As he was seeing a bunch of black dots the second time he heard Maz swear. He coughed at the insult he assumed was directed at the Lady Selwyn. His grandfather spoke very highly of the woman so Gideon made a note to never tell him what had been said.

His sight returned to normal just as they all mounted and he was glad. How embarrassing would it have been to tell these older kids that he’d pretty much blinded himself? Too embarrassing!

He kept up as best he could which was surprisingly well as they flew to their starting point. Now Gideon was going into this race with o false hope. He wasn’t going to win, he knew that. He doubted that Lottie would win either. It was almost as though he could sense the competitiveness rolling off Maz and Tim. The winner was going to be one of them. That was obvious.

It would be fun though, he knew that. And going forward he could always say he’d raced at Morrigan manner with these three older students. There wouldn’t be many other people who could say that. Maybe instead of him being jealous of others the others would be jealous of him for a change.

When they lined up his nerves hit him but they didn’t feel as they usually did. There was too much excitement and building adrenaline for him to be too bothered by nerves. Maz counted down and as soon as she shouted ‘Go!’ Gideon shot off.

The others were faster than him and outpaced him quickly. Gideon didn’t care. The huge smile spreading his lips was proof of that.

The blush that spread across Lottie’s face brought a bright smile to his own. Merlin, he’d missed having her around – she was so much fun to tease. Not to mention her abrupt departure had deprived Amber of one of her few truly close friends. In all respects, it was good to have her back.

“Alright,” he agreed with a laugh, “so long as we’re all on the same page that I’m going to be cheating. And it’s also nice to know just what you think of my flying skills, I’d remind you that I was on the House team for years.”

Tim grinned as Maz fought with finding a way to properly sit on her broom. Normally he had a go to recommendation for that, but it didn’t seem like the proper place for that – certainly not without Amber around and he doubted that Gideon would handle his advice that well either. Fortunately, she came up with her own plan and it seemed to work just fine.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a bit tarty,” he replied with a mischievous grin as Lottie mimicked his thoughts exactly.

Throwing a wink toward the younger girl he teased, “I knew there was a reason that I always liked you.”

“That said, in this instance those pins are a lifesaver – I’ve no doubt that Lady Selwyn would be instantly alerted to what we were up to if you’d cut that dress. Somehow, I don’t expect she’d take too kindly to our race.”

It wasn’t a long walk around to the trails; they would lead out through the woods to a stream, where everyone would have to make a right then they’d cross and follow the main trails again till they looped back around and came out at the far side of the garden maze. It wasn’t a long trail – maybe a mile or two – and taken at speed they should be able to be out and back before anyone really noticed they were gone. Or, at least before anyone felt the need to send out search parties.

He lined up with the rest of them and waited for Maz to call out the start. When she called out, ‘go,’ he took off with the rest of them, but just for a second before slowing somewhat to keep pace with Gideon. The younger boy seemed to be having a good time at least, but Tim had the intention of making sure that the night was memorable for him. As the other two disappeared around the curve up ahead, he called out, “Want to come with me? I can’t wait to see the look on Maz’s face when we’re waiting there for her when she finally comes around.”

“S’no yer flyin’ skills am oan aboot - it’s yer ego.” She turned to the others. “You guys heard eh Tim’s ego? It surely is a fantastical thing by the way. Days go by when ye dinnae see him cause his heids goat so big he cannae lift it aff the bed.”

“Exactly right.” Maz agreed with Lottie and Tim before a frown flitted her face. “Unless yer Jen… or is she who ah learned it fae?” The girl shook her head. “So not entertainin’ that train eh thought like… end up way thoughts eh dain away way masel.”

Maz huffed. “That auld bint disnae seem eh take kindly eh any’hin’.” She was still concerned about how she’d come to agree with the woman in question in the first place. It still wasn’t the time to bring it up though. It would have to keep until she could get Tim and Amber alone to ask what they thought of it all.

When the race began Maz shot off into the trees but, thinking along the same lines as Tim she held back slightly, letting Lottie pass her by. Gideon deserved a helping hand she had decided and as much as she tried to hide it she really was a soft hearted person and would love to see the smile break the younger boy’s face if he did beat them all.

She hung around as long as she thought she could wondering what the hell had happened to the kid. Where had he gone? She hoped the kid didn’t go and get himself lost. As much fun as she was having she did want to get in a good amount of drinking time too. No way was she going to miss out on having her fill of the free alcohol on offer. That would be madness.

Feeling that she couldn’t hang about any longer Maz set off along the trail again dodging tree limbs almost instinctively as she went. She went as fast as she dared while trying to peer through the trees on either side for a glimpse of Gideon. Now she was worried he might have hurt himself along the way. It didn’t occur to her that she hadn’t caught a glimpse of Tim - she hadn’t expected to.

“Fuck this shit!” she grumbled to herself as she decided the sooner she got to the others the better, she was the worst person to be left to come up with likely scenarios. Her imagination always too things too far. Leaning along the broom she pushed on to it’s top speed.

Lottie couldn’t hold back a snicker when Maz spoke about Tim’s ego. “An ego that big needs to be deflated somehow, it seems a little dangerous.” She spoke up with a mock serious look. “Maybe we should get a large pin and pop it?”

It was amusing that both her and Tim seemed to be on the same page, catching sight of the wink and smiling widely. “Of course, I’m always up for being tarty.” Just as she’d finished speaking, Maz spoke in agreement with them, causing Lottie to giggle. “Maybe not questioning the tarty is a good idea then?”

Lottie was surprised when, after flying for only a few moments, she had overtaken Maz. She didn’t believe for once that she had done that on her own skill and wondered what had happened for Maz to drop back. As much as she wanted to drop back and check, she was a little competitive and that streak overtook her worry for Maz. With a small grin, she added an extra spur of speed and shot forward.

It was a great feeling to be outside after the stuffy feeling within the ball, not to mention that now she didn’t have to put on any sort of mask on or have anyone staring at her as if she didn’t belong there. She let out a loud ‘Whoop’ while aiming her broom skywards, completing a loop-de-loop in the sky.

After righting herself she continued along the path, slowing down every now and then to just admire the sights of the forest. She had almost forgotten it was a race, so caught up in her own happiness, and was quite content with coming in last. That in itself was a strange feeling, she really loved winning, but not an unwelcome feeling.

Gideon let what the older kids were saying wash over him. He listened to them but didn’t react. The easy playful banter was something he never did get. It had always seemed like a lot of fun but Gideon had trouble believing it could stay just fun. His nerves jangled with every passing minute as he was always certain a fight must break out.

The young boy frowned when Tim slowed to keep pace with him. He didn’t know what was going on and was suddenly wary of the older Slytherin. He slowed himself pulling the handle up on his broom to almost come to a stop. Hearing the older boys question Gideon frowned, a frown that only deepened as Tim continued.

“C-come with you?” Gideon asked and quickly looked around himself. There was no one there though. Lottie and Maz were both out of sight and everyone else was ack at the house. “I… umm…” he glanced around again his nerves taking a firm hold before quickly he nodded.

He was being silly he knew. Tim was a decent person, not like his sister or his father. And while the thought of getting on the wrong side of Maz terrified him Gideon didn’t think she’d be too mad at not winning. She didn’t seem to him to be the kind of person who really cared. Except that time Hufflepuff had lost to Gryffindor and he’d seen her hit someone with her beater bat but Gideon was certain then that there was something more personal to that hit.

“Okay.” He answered with weak smile. He flew closer to the older boy ready to follow as he led the way.

For just a moment, a betrayed look crossed his face as Lottie chimed in, in agreement with Maz. It didn’t last long before he broke into a laugh and countered with, “Nonsense! My ego sustains me and gives me strength! The larger it gets the stronger I get. The problem is clearly not that I can’t lift it off my bed so much as that I have issues fitting it through the doorways.”

A short bark of laughter escaped him as Maz’s thoughts ran away on her. It was always nice to know that he wasn’t the only one that experienced that.

“You’re spot on there, Lottie! One should never question being tarty.”

Despite himself, he couldn’t help but laugh again at the way that Maz referred to Lady Selwyn. It wasn’t something that would have been tolerated around the Caer and as much as he enjoyed bucking the rules, the ones that Richard had laid down had always been, and would always be, sacrosanct.

Then the race was on.

Tim frowned a bit as Gideon slowed and seemed to hesitate. As though the younger boy was afraid, that he was going to hurt him or something. The idea didn’t sit well with Tim but he knew there wasn’t anything to say about it. Arguing against fears was stupid; all he could do was show him that everything was fine. Fortunately, the younger boy gave in and followed along. The delay would cost them a little bit of time, but his path would shave enough distance off the route that they should still come out with a decent lead.

Not too far ahead, when they were approaching the first small stream, Tim pulled a hard right and they cut forward across a small game trail that rain along the water’s edge. If you hadn’t known that it was there, it would have been easy to miss. Granted, they could have just cut through the woods and it would have been just as easy – and possibly faster – but Tim had set them out following trails and he was content to follow the letter of his description, if not the spirit.

Checking behind him to make sure the younger boy was still back there, he called out, “You’re a good flier!”

“Watch the low branches,” he finished with a laugh as he turned back around just in time to duck under a hanging bough that could have easily unseated him. The shortcut probably cut off about a third of the distance of the ‘official’ path.

“Nah. Pins ur a bit extreme. Just need tae remind him he’s no actually aw that every noo an’ again.” Maz answered Lottie. “He always says that.” Was her response to Tim’s counter point.

“You may be spot on there.” Maz agreed with Lottie shooting a grin the younger girls way.

Even while she worried that Gideon was lying in a heap at the bottom of a tree or something worse Maz enjoyed the flight through the trees. Obstacles in her way were avoided easily as she ducked or swerved at the very last second even in the low light. It was as if she knew just when and how to avoid them all - which she did. Being a seer wasn’t just about visions, crystal balls and all the rest. Much of it was instincts and Maz had learned long ago to trust her gut instincts even if all her gut was telling her to do was move slightly to the left or make a dive. Instincts were why she was so good when it had come to the lessons on dodging during duels. It came so naturally.

Soon enough she could tell that the trail was coming to an end, the finish of their race only just out of her sight. She slowed a little, it wouldn’t do to go barrelling into one of the others at top speed.

When she finally could see them Maz let out a sigh of relief - she had been more worried about the youngest Slytherin with them than she’d realised. Then her eyes fell on Tim and she shot him a very dangerous look as once again she sped up. His expression, laughter and the guilty look on Gideon’s face were enough for her to put two-and-two together. Tim had done what she’d planned to do herself - really she should have known. Now she knew where each of them were she had no worry about bashing one of them to the ground. She did plan one tackling on of them off their broom however.

Instead of heading directly for the older boy Maz set course for beside him. It wasn’t a game of chicken she was after. At just the right moment she dived off her broom tackling Tim high in the stomach as she went. She wrapped around her friend to protect his back from the bump they’d inevitably be taking.

The hard landing on the ground came with Maz having positioned herself to take it all with her back flat. A gush of breath escaped her but it was quickly followed by a laugh as she let go of Tim only to poke him in the ribs.

“Ah wiz bloody worried aboot him yah mad c**t!” She scolded her friend. “Thought he’d done hisself an injury!” More rib poking came along with another burst of laughter. “Yer an absolute wanker, Morrigan. Ye know that, right?”

“Is Lottie awright?” She asked craning her neck round to see from her spot under Tim. “Oh fuckin’ hell man. Ah’ve came ower aw mumsy.” She huffed and gave Tim one last rib poke. “Your fault!”
