He had snuck out of his home that night. It had been the first time in a long while when he was home over the holidays even, but that had perhaps something to do with attending the ball, and having to be made presentable.

He had first dreaded coming home and rightfully so. He could no longer conceal what he had done for so long. They knew. Whether they found out via the professor or someone else, but they knew. His brother had been of no help at all, offered little support. Of course the regime after that, was strict. Take the potion the professor provided and be allowed to brew absolutely nothing while at home. His cauldron had been confiscated and his 'crime' had been a flaw pushed into his face every morning. His brother got praise, while he had gotten the scolding. Why was he not more like his older brother who was now soon to be employed in the family's business. His brother could do no wrong, he had been merely a victim of circumstance to which Pavon had done nothing to right. Yes, even that had been said, and his brother remained silent. It hurt him to listen but he could not leave the table till the meal was finished, and once or twice he dared to do so, things had only gotten worse. His loving family had become anything but. The worst part was, he realised, that if someone spoke ill of them he would still have jumped to their defence, still said how great they were. He felt alone. More now than he had when he first entered Hogwarts so many years ago. His owl the only being that kept him company and still looked pleased when she saw him. She would still nuzzle up into his hand, still screech and squeak affectionately and still remain loyal.

A few times Pavon had been tempted to shout back, to tell them exactly how much he did, but then he knew it would not change anything. They would not have believed him, his brother would not have stood at his side to back him up. Ever since he was free his attitude had returned. Proud, cocky and dismissive of his younger sibling. Pavon wondered if he had always been like that and in his youth, naively, he had believed him different or if he had changed by exile instead.

Of course all this had not absolved him from the obligation, the deal he had made. Sneaking out had been surprisingly not as hard as he thought it would be. It might have been down to all the preparations that had been made for the other day, all the fretting and the lot. Sure he had also used the collar that had him leave in a shape of a small feline. His brother had not had any use of it any more, so he'd just taken it back.

Once outside he ran to the pile of clothes he had left there, covered by a cloak that made it look as though it was a mere rock. He removed the collar then, suddenly back to his human self. He shivered as he got dressed in all the layers of the cloth and fabric he had left for himself. The robes were cold, having stayed outside all that time. He squinted his eyes closed, then with trembling hands pulled his gloves on last.

Then he was off.

It was a fair while later that he appeared in the Knockturn alley, a dark, albeit small, shadow hurrying past the many witches and wizards of questionable background, that hogged the streets at that time of night. He clutched his wand tight in the pocket of his robes, to keep himself calm.

Once he reached the nondescript door he gave it a tap, two taps, four and then one again. He pressed his wrist to one part of the door, which glowed very faintly. It slid open and then the moment he was inside, slid closed again.

----

It was a while later that he exited the same place again, righting his cape and tugging it over his head again. There was something he carried with him now, concealed, hidden. He had shuddered at the memory of the werewolf man who had also been there. He was not in his beastly form, but one just knew who he was, what he was. It was a manner in which he held himself, the way he moved, spoke.

Pavon moved away from there as quickly as he could, passing more of the residents on the way through the dark streets. One had grasped at his shoulder a short while later. "Now now, what do we have here?" The voice spoke, raspy, tired, unpleasant. He twisted away , the spindly arm still gripping a handful of his cloak so that it tugged him back by it.

He stumbled and turned, yanking roughly on his robe to get it free. "Far past the time the normal folk come here..." Was the unpleasant voice again, leering. He wondered why the meeting place had been here and not somewhere, nicer, less populated with the vermin of the wizarding world. "Let go!" He snapped and pulled again, hearing a tear. The hand moved forward to take a better grip of more than that one layer and as he bumped into another one, he turned to smirk at him as well. "Don't you know it is not polite to ram into people?" The taller one asked.

He really had regretted taking this street and not the other, that would have been longer but had seemed to be a little broader. Shortcuts, never, ever, take them. And all this just because he had to come here. He pulled his wand out and his next spell singed the fingers of the one holding his robe. The sudden release had him falling backwards while the voice howled in anger. He did not waste time but to roll - near tangling himself in his own robes -- to get back to his feet. He choked as his scarf was yanked back by an invisible force. He fell back again, still pulling at his the fabric around his neck as it tightened.

"Fine clothes. Hmmm.. you aren't from around here." The voice said and more began to crowd them now. "Wonder how much of those coins you have on you." The wand may have been used a few times more before a foot stepped onto his hand, holding it and he was forced to release.

The rock, a rock obviously not picked up on that street flew out of nowhere. Controlled by magic it arched through the air and clunked the man holding Pavon on the back of the head. He dropped to the ground hard where he remained - unmoving.

His partner looked around frantically but there was no sign of the rock thrower. Though anyone could be hiding in the shadows. As he backed up he repeatedly glanced from side to side, his eyes trying to find the culprit. Something invisible pulled him back. Up off his feet he went and through the air coming to rest in the shadowy areas he'd been trying to watch all at once.

From the darkness came the sounds of a fight, a vicious fight. The man was punched, kicked and banged on the walls that encased the alley. By the time his assailant was done he too was a heap on the ground. Unlike his friend he was consious and could move though barely.

A whistle sounded, a short signal. The air behind the man shifted as a huge figure cracked into existence. His frame could be seen. A frame wearing a long jacket and a wide-brimmed hat. The white of his teeth could just be made out when he smiled. The shades arm moved bringing the attacker at Pavon's feet to him. He crouched, placed a hand on the two on the ground and with another crack Pavon was alone.

Or so it would seem except, except for the figure just glimpsed who moved now and then. Much slighter than the one before was this person, both in height and breadth. Small puffs of light were present now and again as the person got on with whatever they were doing. There was no sound, not even the shuffling of feet - only silence was in the moving shadow.

Pavon struggled to get up when the fight began. His eyes tried to follow the events, although much of it was concealed by the darkness of the street. He was confused, stunned, unsure as to who it was that had decided to beat the attackers. His first thought may have been that it was one of them, the ones he had just gone to. That they might have sent someone to follow him and that that someone might have chosen to lend a hand. There was another explanation to all of this, was it another attacker who wanted what he might have all for himself? If that was so, he should have tried to run now, that they were still busy, if almost done.

He backed against one of the walls, his wand in hand. Any other occupants of the street seemed to have just melted away into the darkness, not to be seen. They saw nothing, heard nothing, oh they had never even been here. Shakily Pavon backed a bit along the wall, his wand firmly in hand again, though the bruising was quickly becoming evident on it. As had it been on his shoulder and partially his neck, where the attacker's had reached out to grasp him. But most of the other marks remained hidden.

"W...Who are you?" He would have liked to have his voice sound more confident than it did. "....Thank you for helping me." He said, and thought he did sound better, braver. He dusted his robes, and tried to see if he could get a better glimpse of... not one , but two shapes. Wait, a broad brimmed hat. He remembered that one from somewhere. He had to jog his memory. What was it, where had he seen him before. Broad, largely built man that...he had something to do with his brother.

After a moment it downed on him, but he still was not sure. Was it the same man, or was his mind just trying to supply him with something, anything to make him feel more safe. Why would he be here though , or help him? He had not paid him since he had done the work he was hired to do. He had not seen him since then either. And who was the second figure, much smaller and much leaner than him. They appeared to have been working in tandem or he was sorely mistaken and simply bloody lucky that someone decided to lend him a hand. But what did that entail? What would they want?

"C...lyde?" He murmured, and he knew that if he was wrong, then he would simply try to buy himself time before he could run the other way. His lip was starting to hurt. When he reached to it he could taste and see some blood. He hadn't even known when that happened. Maybe when he fell?

Pavon's utterings had seemingly went unnoticed as the two did what they'd come to and the one left cleaned up after them. They weren't unheard though. His knowing Clyde's name piqued some interest. More often than not only a certain type of person interacted with the man.

The remaining figure didn't hurry but went about their business at a leisurely place leaving Pavon looking like he was trying to become the wall. The figure was amused though and kept sneaking glances at the boy.

All movement stopped. The last spark of light had come and gone. The shadowy person-shape was now facing the boy, watching him. The head tilted managing to make the movement seem unhuman by slowly dragging it out. A shuffle step forward then, nothing.

Watching the boy again the breathing of the figure could now be heard. Each one was deep, long and louder. Much louder than the frame could surely produce. The head tilted again, slowly the other way. Another shuffle step forward. The shape was now just within the shadows. Another and they'd be clearly seen.

That last step forward came. The figure showed itself for all the use it was... Wearing a overlarge black hooded jumper with the hood pulled up enough to hide the face, black jeans and black biker boots the person inside the clothes could be male or female... or perhaps something quite different. Even the hands were hidden having been pulled up into the sleeves. It moved another two steps towards Pavon. Every move was a slight jerk, awkward.

The lights went out and the street was covered in darkness but for whatever light the sky could give. He backed up. He could hear the breathing. He was not going to show fear now. He had his wand and very soon he uttered the most basic of commands to it: "Lumos." He shone it in the direction of the figure that approached him, slow and deliberate.

He could not recognise who it was, heck, he could not even tell what it was. For a fleeting moment he remembered that attack that had happened in the streets - where was it again - a while ago. Then dismissed it. "That's far enough." He snapped, trying to sound as commanding as he could. Would they listen? Come closer?

He did take a step back but kept the light pointed in the direction of the figure. "I will defend myself, so don't try anything funny." Still thought this could be a muggle born out to attack a pureblood. After all just look at the clothes, anything but pureblood! or.. heck just want something from him. He was too tired to care and he felt sore, the bruising didn't help his mood.

"That's my last warning." He did glance briefly towards where he had seen the much larger man earlier. He was fully and trully gone. Ok, back to then quickly to this one, as it had been so much closer than Clyde.

"Not a step closer." His voice did sound more threatening - while his mind raced through what spell he could get away with casting.

The figure bent double as slightly muffled laughter erupted from the hood. A gloved hand was thrown out to use the wall to keep steady. Or as steady as a laughing fit would allow. The laughing continued while the boy was ignored. Or almost, since the figures other gloved hand had come loose of the sleeve, wand clasped tightly.

"Your face!" The voice was still muffled as the figure stood. "Excellent!" The hand removed from the wall pulled back the hood to reveal... a still revealed figure. The face hidden now by a low pulled black winter hat and a black scarf pulled to below the eyes. "Really brilliant!"

When the hat came off it revealed the top of a brunette's head. The thick glossy hair there tinted with lighter shades. "Wish ah hid a camera." The chuckling sounded as the scarf was removed showing the smiling mouth beneath.

"Honestly man, bein' your pal wid be a lot easier if ye didnae keep walkin' yersel intae bother." Maz placed her hands on her hips and shook her head. Her hair shook free as she did. "Pit that oot." she nooded at his wand. "Dinnae know how long the magic in the Alley'll cover ye."

Maz walked over to Pavon, now moving naturally. "The fuck ye doin' oot here anyway? Weird place tae come fur a midnight stroll this." She quirked a brow as she glanced round the dimly lit street which was still deserted but for the two. "There's literally sweet fuck all tae see or dae."

"....Not funny." He wasn't amused. He was relieved to see that it was nobody worse than simply Maz, although he was also startled to realise that it was her as this was the last place he imagined to meet her. As he made his wand's light die out he slipped it back into his pocket. "I got attacked moments before you and.....where is the other one?" He looked around again but they were truly alone.

"....When you and him came. How could I know you were trying to really , really help me?" He glanced around again. They were alone, which was good. He adjusted his robes one more time rubbing his neck under the scarf. He winced. Yep, that was one ugly bruise all around there. It hadn't affected his voice too much but for a slight hoarseness.

"I should be asking you the same question. What are you doing here?" He asked. "...It's not like you had a late night snack want or something." He paused. "And that would be better taken care of in Diagon, not here...And who was that guy?" Now he asked it as if he did not know. Well he had not been absolutely certain he was right. "Was he with you?.. Why?" Sure, turn the questions right back at her and hope she would forget what she had wanted to know in the first place.

"Can we go somewhere....less dark? Those two might've gone, but that doesn't mean others won't start pouring in now that all's ....calm again." He winced rubbing the fingers on his wand hand.

He checked that what he'd been given was still there. Yes, good.

Again Maz ignored Pavon while she kept laughing to herself. She didn't need to know why he reacted the way he did. With or without explanation it was hilarious. When he answered her question with one of his own she rolled her eyes. She'd long come to regard such a move as typical Pavon.

"Oh ah wonder why ah might happen eh turn up when you're aboot tae git yer arse handed tae ye. Nothin' like that's ever happened before." The sarcastic tone she adopted was a heavy one. "Totally the snack 'hing. It's the only answer. Ah fancied fish an' chips... seem eh of goat lost along the way though..." She looked around again though in an exaggerated manner this time.

Maz was just as good as he was at dodging questions. "Ah expect you must be here fur the same reason then, eh. It is the only explanation efter aw."

"Ye feart?" Maz asked, a brow quirking as she did. "Efter aw that... whit wiz it? Oh aye!" When she spoke next her voice was deeper, closer to Pavon's. She stopped just short of impersonating him. "'I will defend myself' ... 'Last warning' an' 'Not a step further'..." she dropped the mocking, "did ye no mean it? Dinnae worry, yer safe enough way me aboot. Am fuckin' mental! Whose startin' shit way me?"

It was true what he said though. Without warning Maz took a hold of his wrist and turned them into apparition. It wasn't her favourite way to travel, it was far from the most comfortable. It was fast though and, in winter especially, that counted for a lot.

They appeared on the other side standing in a garden at the back of a two-storey cottage. The lights were on and welcoming in one of the back windows and shone through the glass panel in the back door. Maz dropped Pavon's hand and strode forward and through the door. Her hat, gloves and scarf she tossed onto the large wooden table in the middle of the kitchen. She carried onto the fireplace and magically lit a fire in the grate. "Tea?" she asked Pavon when she heard him enter.

The kitchen was cozy enough. Painted in a warm orange shade with white cupboards and dark wooden surfaces - it was kept very clean. It was also very obviously a muggle kitchen even though no muggles lived in the house. There was a cooker, fridge freezer, microwave and electric kettle to be seen on first glance. Hidden away behind cupboard doors were other everyday muggle aides to life.

"I would have fought them off... given a chance." He wasn't sure he would really, but he hated to admit it to Maz. The moment he lost hold of his wand he knew he was as good as defenceless. At least this time the two men were actually much bigger, stronger and.... no excuse. He still would not have wanted to admit that Maz was right.

When she gripped his wrist he winced. He was about to pull his hand free when they suddenly disappeared from one place only to reappear moments later in another. Good thing he hadn't pulled free just as they were mid 'reappearing' or in the middle of the travel. Who knows what would have happened then.

He stumbled a little when they were on the other side and then rubbed his hand over his wrist. He sighed. It looked more inviting than the knockturn alley, yes. From outside it wasn't as obvious that this place was far from magical. He followed after Maz, looking about one last time, before entering. That was probably where he stopped. His eyes strayed from one appliance to another. He had taken enough muggle studies to know their names. He tensed up.

This was so.... so.... SO.. muggle. There was the fridge. This could at least have been considered as a .. oddly coloured cupboard, but a microwave could not be ignored, nor could the electric kettle. They were far too obviously not wizard. He made a face moving past them at a distance almost as if expecting any of them to suddenly jump at him and dirty his clothes. He had half a mind to exit, but the fire was too inviting and had been lit using magic.

He took a chair and pushed it closer to the fireplace. He shrugged his upper layer - the cloak - off his shoulders. Forgetting that it would be painfully obvious, he took his scarf of as well once warmed up. His neck felt tender, but so much better now that the scarf was not applying any pressure to it. "......this place. ......who does it belong to?" He asked, having deliberately sat in such a fashion that his body made only the contact with his own cloak and none with anything that might have been muggle infested. He was visibly uncomfortable.

"...you are making tea in ....that?" It looked like a kettle except it sat on top of something that had a cable snaking out towards the wall. He leaned closer to the flame. The heat was nice. "....What are your ...dealings with Clyde?" This time he had been blunt. He tilted his head towards her, his eyes serious as he inquired this. He did not need to warn her about him. He did what he was asked to do, and while dangerous, he would not be so, to his customers.

"Ye furget wan 'hing... ah know mair aboot whit wiz gaunae happen than you." She tapped the side of her head though she guessed she could have tapped her forehead - her 'third-eye'. "An' you cannae dae shit withoot yer wand." Which from what she'd witnessed would have been taken from him.

Maz left Pavon to his shock while she got on with making the tea. The kettle was boiling and the mugs readily waiting when he asked whose home it was. "Technically mine." She answered and turned to face him, leaning against the counter as she did. "Ah own it an' it's where ah live the noo... it's Jen's hoose though. Used tae look like a shitheap - a clean shitheap but a shitheap aw the same. She decorated though. Noo it's quite nice."

She ignored his questioning of her making tea in the kettle. There was little point getting into such a discussion with him. He was too pig-headed. A shame, as Maz thought it was with any pureblood. They really were cutting their noses off to spite their faces by denying themselves things from the muggle world. Still, each to their own.

The kettle finished boiling and Maz filled the two mugs. One she sat on the table beside Pavon and the other across from him. Between the two she put a silver milk jug she'd taken from the fridge and matching sugar bowl with spoon.

"Whit business is it way you whit mah dealin's way him ur?" Maz questioned Pavon right back. "You should jist content yersel way bein' a lucky bastard that he wiz efter that pair eh c**ts anyway." His disomfort was making her smile since she viewed it as utterly ridiculous. What did he think was about to happen? That the muggle appliances would come to life and eat him? Probably something along those lines she thought.

"Anyway, kin ah no ask the same question eh you since you knew who he is?" She began fixing her tea, adding the milk and suger before squeezing the tea bag against the side.

"...Did you really know I would be here from that?..This time?" He would believe her if she said she did. He just wanted to know if her being there was pure chance or if she had once more been the one to see something and, for his sake, prevent it from happening. Boy was he glad she had not seen the scene in the terrarium, with Penelope and those boys. She would never have allowed him to live that down.

He didn't like the feeling that he was in a muggle home, the appliances that he did not know how to work with, it just, didn't feel alright. He'd gone to a school trip into a muggle world before, and then too he would have wished he never needed to. A muggle home meant no magic, in a way. Perhaps there was a subconscious fear of such a life, that made him hate all that was muggle. He watched the water be poured into the mugs, the tea be made and then the various things be brought out of the fridge. He saw the light lit up when she opened it.

He diverted his gaze and looked instead at his cup. "So... he was after them then." Fortunate. "...Did they try to mug him too or something?" Highly unlikely. If anything they'd have given him a wide berth. "....I just, .. know him because of his reputation. And I've used his services before." A little too honest, but she could think what she wanted. Perhaps he just used him as a body guard. Really nobody would dare threaten him, if he had him around.

"So...now that you know. Why were you with him?" He wouldn't give her any suggestions on what it could be. Rather he simply waited. He did briefly glance at the time, reminding himself that he needed to get home soon enough before his parents would notice he was even gone.

"He's not coming back here, is he?"

"Naw!" The sarcasm was back as she drew the word out. "Ah always come a midnight stroll doon Knockturn. Ah find it maist liberatin'." Though a case of crossed wires could be blamed for her seeing what she did. She'd been trying to help Clyde locate the two he'd wanted a quite word and maybe a couple punches with. Not that she'd been able to pinpoint where Pavon would be. There was a reason why she and Clyde had been spread on opposite sides of the alley. An agreement on the whistling signal.

Maz laughed. "Them mug Parker?" She couldn't actually properly picture anyone being stupid enough to try to mug someone who looked how and gave off the vibes Clyde Parker did. "Huv tae be missin' yer whole brain eh try that wan."

When Pavon admitted he'd used Clyde's services Maz's eyes widened. She stopped stirring her tea and stared. "Who the hell you been f**kin' way tae need someone like him?" It was the obvious question. Most people only approached Clyde for his violent services.

Ignoring him again Maz laughed once more. "Naw he's no comin' back here... well, no for a while... probably. Ah reckon he'll be quite busy but he knows there's stew oan the go." A pot on the cooker top held the food Maz had made earlier.

After taking a sip of her tea and placing the mug carefully back on the table Maz decided she may as well answer Pavon. "Ah wiz tryin' tae help him get they bastards. They mugged his auld mam. His f**kin' mam! How low's that?" Of course Clyde didn't know what Maz was but he did know she had a way of knowing things and finding other stuff out. Maz had never spoken to him about it and he returned the favour. This had been the first time he'd approached her for help.

"Another stroke eh luck is me bein' back. Ah wiz gaunae stay at school. Jen's stuck there so..." she shrugged. "Then that stupit f**kin' ball pish an-" Maz was grumbling now but stopped herself.

"I'm a pureblood. What do you think. But.....No. I didn't need him to beat anybody up, if that's what you are wondering." He began to drink his tea then, and use that as an excuse to keep silent. At least he learned now why she was here. His 'mam' had been attacked by the pair, and clearly they had been more successful than with him. But only because she had not had the pair there to save her.

"That sort of folk doesn't think who they mug.. just whether they can." He murmured touching his hand to his neck and wincing. They had nearly choked him, yanking him down like that. He really needed to consider employing Clyde again should he have to come here on his own in the middle of the night. Or.. .if not that, find a different place to meet.

"Well..thank you for being where you were. " His gratitude was honest. He looked tired as he sipped at his tea again. "So you are going to the ball as well?..You know, it isn't so bad. There will be some notable families present. ...Possibly an opportunity.. or something.." He had skipped Halloween that year, if only because he hadn't felt well.

"My family is going. All of them. Mother, father and my brother. Now that he is back they are looking for any way possible to reintroduce him into society." There was some bitterness in that tone, much as he tried to conceal it. "..So,..yeah, we will all be there."

He was quiet for a while then, just sipping his tea. The food that she'd made smelled nice, other than the far too muggle feel of the house, it felt cosy, nice, clean. The fire in the fireplace made him wish he could just curl up near it and sleep. "...Remember when we planned on...finding out how to ..become the animagi?" He murmured studying the flame. He thought he was close. He needed to start with the process of course and if he calculated well, he knew just when he could do it without getting caught.

“The f**k hiz bein’ pureblood goat tae dae way it?” Maz frowned then sat back and quirked a brow. “How dae you actually dae that? How kin ye find a way eh make every’hin’ eh dae way yer blood?” She turned mocking. “Hid a wee ghostie shite this mornin’ - totally cause am pureblood, so…” she shrugged dismissively. “Burnt the toast… cause am pureblood. Slipped but didnae faw over cause am pureblood.” She laughed then before standing abruptly and moving to the cooker to check on the stew. It had been left on a low heat but still needed stirring now and again.

“So he helped ye way yer brother then?” She asked as she stirred having worked it out. “Afore he wiz yer cat stealin’ shufties at mah nakedness ah mean.” Maz turned to Pavon then, large spoon still in hand. “That wiz the time when he was in a f**kin’ stonker eh a mood noo ah ‘hink aboot it. Aye the timing’s right. An’ ah mean serious pissed aff face goin’ oan.” She made an angry face herself. “Stompin’ aboot… even some grumblin’ an’ fae Parker that’s pretty much a fu bore conversation.” A grin had worked it’s way onto her lips. “Yer brother must be a right annoyin’ prick. It’s impossible tae git a rise oot eh Parker an’ believe me, ah huv tried.”

Maz was so shocked she almost dropped the spoon. “Thanks? Fae you? Comin’ doon way some’hin’ ur ye?” She may have been joking but as she said it she took a proper look at the boy. As had become usual he looked cold and ill. She did worry about him, she had tried to speak to him. It hadn’t work and it wouldn’t work then so, as had been the answer before it was the answer then - she’d feed him.

While he spoke of the upcoming ball Maz got two bowls from the cupboard and cutlery from a drawer. She ladelled out a large helping into both bowls before putting one beside each of their cups. “Eat up. Everybody raves aboot mah stew. There’s meat, obviously. Tatties, carrots, some onion, wee bit turnip but dinnae turn yer nose up. It melts away but leaves a nice kick in the taste. Honestly, ye’ll like it. Oh bread!” The girl jumped up and went to the wooden bread bin on the worktop. “Made this the day anaw.” She informed Pavon as she placed a board holding bread, knife and butter between them and resumed her seat. “Fuckin’ borin’ bein’ here fur the holidays. Telly’s shite in the day so ah spend mah time cleanin’ an’ cookin’.”

“An’ aye am goin’ tae the stupit ball.” She answered him now the more important issue of food had been seen to. “Singin’ at it anaw.” She could not sound or look any less happy. “Yer brother’s furst night oot though… least ye should be able tae sneak away.” she smiled, she could always find that silver lining.
The reminder of their animagi research had come while she’d been ladelling and she’d smiled at the memory. She shook her head now. “Ye dae realise ah hid nae hope in hell eh actually managin’ tae change, right?” Her transfiguration record was known outside of her own year, helped along by the fact that Maz thought the stories of her messing up were hilarious. “You still wantin’ tae gee it a go like?”

When usually Pavon would have argued and continued with his conviction that much of the things could be blamed on him being and others not being a pureblood, he had this time just listened and, didn't say a word more. He was tired. Things had mostly not been going as he wished and he needed an outlet somewhere, where he could just rest. He had not of course and the potion that now helped him against the one he had taken for far too long, was making things more difficult.

"...Yes. He helped me with my brother. Protected him because there was ...some people after him. I paid him for that until I figured out a somewhat less expensive way of doing it." Maz knew already more than most, so one additional bit would not have done much difference. "...I'm sorry I didn't tell you, but it was for your own good and I did my best to keep him mostly in my dorm. I'm sure he did not sneak a peak, much as you think he was doing any of that. Least not intentionally." He watched her work.

He gave Maz a wry smile when she asked him about whether he was ill. "Been down with something a while..." Was the stress of having to be stuck in a muggle house getting to him to a point that he'd be telling some truths? It had not been the tea, surely. He did take a sip from it and continued to watch her walk about, bringing things to the table, checking the stew and then pouring it for him. He was not all that hungry, but it did smell nice. He wondered if it was a sign of getting better, that he had thought that.

"Thank you." Another nicety spoken after his stew was presented to him. He ate a little, took a bit of bread and butter, a spoonful of stew, and kept his gaze down at it, rather than Maz. "You're singing?" He asked. "I didn't know you could."The mildest of jabs. He inhaled tiredly and just the same exhaled slowly.

"I'm doing it. ...the whole transformation, the whole process. I've got everything i need and could get before the whole process with the mandrake leaf. Now, getting a lightning storm at this time of year will be hard, but I've got about a month of time anyway. Don't tell anyone, alright? ....I mean, I can help you if you want to try it as well. It's somewhat complicated and many things need to be done just right and at just the right time, but other than that...." He shrugged. "I'm convinced I should do fine. I read that in one of the other schools children as young as 14 successfully do it. So really, it shouldn't be that hard."

He took some more of the stew and actually complimented its taste. "...I'll see if I can keep it in my cheek. Just hope it works because I really don't want to develop a lisp just because I have that thing in my mouth."

Pavon didn’t respond and Maz frowned. She’d been expecting him not to rise to her needling - he really was no fun at all. But her question, well not answering that was just rude. “Serious question though.” She wouldn’t let it lie. “How dae ye dae that? Is it some’hin’ parents teach? Whole lessons oan how tae wear the blood tinted specs properly?”

“Maistly in yer dorm except fur that time ye goat the frightners pit up ye an’ asked me tae look efter yer cat.” It was a knowing look she gave Pavon then. “How dae ye ‘hink ah so easily pit the pieces together? Never met a mair uncatlike cat in mah life an’ ah’ve goat Mike. Sometimes he ‘hinks he’s an owl, dug or human.” It was all she’d wanted, an acknowledgement of the fuck up he’d made. She wouldn’t even push for the further acknowledgement that his brother was a total pervert. “Ye’ll need tae fun oot how yer brother managed tae irritate him so much. It’s like some kind eh talent or some’hin’.”

Maz nodded, “Aye years noo. How’s the addiction? Kicked it yet? That why yer lookin’ bad the noo?” It was her best guess since she assumed that he wouldn’t have gotten addicted to a potion that wasn’t somehow beneficial to him.

“Voice eh the angels me.” Maz grinned at his jibe. “Dinnae know why the auld boot wants me though or how the fuck she goat me tae agree.” It was odd how it had come about. Had she been asked weeks ago Maz would have been adamant in the fact that never in a million years would she agree to do such a thing. Now she had agreed though, there was no backing out.

Again Maz was laughing. “Here’s the ‘hing. Am regularly banned fae tryin’ human transfigurations in class… ‘hink ah’d be takin’ mah life in mah hands tryin’ it. An’ anyway, mah tits ur useful enough fur openin’ doors an’ helpin’ me fun stuff oot… dinnae need tae turn intae an animal.” She wouldn’t come right out and tell him she could probably narrow down the dates of the next lightning storm. She could do it but she wasn’t some kind of weather girl and she suspected too that Pavon was hinting. She hated hinting. Much better was to just come straight out and ask.

The girl chuckled but she did have some advice, something she’d thought of when they’d been researching before. “Go eh the nurse an’ act like ye cannae tawk. Keep it up long enough and when they dinnae find a medical cause they’ll put it doon eh stress. Write doon that ye really dinnae want tae miss oot oan coursework cause it’ll make the stress work an’ she’ll write ye a note sayin’ ye cannae talk. Show that tae the professors an’ boom - ready made excuse tae keep yer mooth shut.” Maz knew the nurse quite well, well enough to be rather good at guessing how the woman would handle certain situations.
